“Functional hotel”

For this particular trip, our most important criteria was location, so for that, the hotel was perfect. It was better than expected for comfort, decor, and cleanliness. We had to ask several times to get the extra bed made for our son. We asked at check-in, before we left for the evening because we would be returning late & would want to out our son to bed immediately, then upon our return when the bed still was not made. The included breakfast was mediocre. No coffee or tea service (i.e., electric kettle) in the room.

“Look elsewhere”

Overpriced for a bad location, small rooms, and a smoke stench that never went away.

“Would definitely return to Jerusalem Gold Hotel”

I found the hotel staff very helpful and pleasant. The bedroom maid service was very good and staff attended to any requirements. The buffet breakfast was extensive with lots of choice only minor complaint would be that food was not hot at times but I did not mention this so am sure if I had the staff would have done something as they were always attentive to guest's needs.

Area recommendations
The area nearby the hotel was good and there were a good range of shops and a nearby supermarket. Also, it was adjacent to the Central Bus Station with easy access to buses in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel should you wish to travel further afield. There are some hostel/small hotels in and nearby the Old City which might be useful for people who want to come to Israel but only have a small budget.
When to go
If you don't like it hot then the best months to go generally are March/April or late October through November.
Getting there
On arrival at Ben Gurion Airport outside are the taxi ranks and the Shuruts (mini buses). Taxi's are dearer and if you don't mind travelling with strangers the Shurut is the best option. They go to various destinations and signs post you in the right direction. There is usually a man in charge of transport operations and he will see that you get a bus. If you are going to Jerusalem the current fare is 55 NIS (Shekels)
Getting around
The local buses are the cheapest form of travel and can take you all over Israel. If going for a day ask for a day return ticket as this is cheaper. If you are going to use the buses to get you from A to B and are staying awhile then ask the driver for a ten ticket as this is cheaper than paying single fares.
What to pack
Depending on time of year you visit Israel a variety of clothing and comfortable walking shoes are a must. During the Autumn, Winter and Spring months the evenings can be cooler so pack something warm. In the Summer, light clothing, sunhat etc., is best and don't forget the swimsuit for a trip to the Dead Sea.
Must see
If you are in Jerusalem then you must go to the Old City and also the Shuk (Mehane Yehuda). You don't have to be religious to go to visit the Garden Tomb, it is a lovely place to go and contemplate. A trip to the Dead Sea is a must have experience but be careful when going into the sea as you can lose your footing. Best to wear goggles as getting salt in your eyes is extremely uncomfortable, but don't let this put you off. You can daub black sea mud onto your skin and let it sink in once you come out. When you rinse the mud off your skin feels really lovely.
Dining
Depending on your requirements and budget there are plenty of restaurants, fast food/take aways and on almost every street corner you will find stalls selling Fallafal and Shwarma. These vary in price but it is a must try. I would recommend a small family run Italian Tratattoria which is on Agrippas Street just round the corner from the central aisle of the Shuk, known locally as Mehane Yehuda, which is also a great place to visit for atmosphere and bargains.

“solid place, great location”

i came here after a tough 3 days in the old city. i stayed for a week. i found the staff to be very helpful as i was travelling alone and i am 70 years old. my room was quiet and everything worked. they could do a better job with the soap but this is a quibble. the location virtually abuts the central bus station and thus affords great opportunity for travel. city buses are right down beneath the hotel. i love to walk and i found many museums within a 1/2 hour of the hotel. the walk to the old city is about 45 minutes along jaffa street which is a very interesting jaunt. i found breakfast to be excellent and plentiful. the bus station has a nifty mall which abounds in food selections. when i asked them to order a sherut, they did and it came right on time. nobody has their hand out. i was very pleased with the hotel and i recommend it highly. if i come back to jerusalem i would not hesitate to stay here. one word of warning. when the sabbath begins the entire neighborhood goes still until it ends the next evening. after i got used to it i liked it but it is a jolt given that this is a very busy area otherwise.

“Very good hotel for the price”

My experience was pleasant. Hotel was clean, staff was very nice. Did not care for the breakfast, could be better. Everybody was helpful, would give directions, suggestions for the trip. I had problems with the tour company; the concierge would make phone calls for me. The hotel is close to central bus station, but far away from an old city.

“VIVA Jerusalem Gold”

This was our second time at Jerusalem Gold. The experience was very pleasant as was the first time. The staff and service is excellent here. Within walking distance you have the Central Bus Station, the main Post Office to either mail postcards or exchange your currency, a grocery store and a shopping mall with plenty of places to eat. The Old City and museums are very close too. This hotel location is unbeatable and very safe. Jerusalem Gold is definitely our place to stay on our annual Israel visit. You really can't beat their prices for their quality.

“Expedia & Google Maps show the wrong location; otherwise a great hotel”

Google Maps shows the wrong location for this hotel when you search for the address. It shows the hotel as being between between King George and HaNevi'im streets. The hotel is really right next to the central bus station, at the very western end of Jaffa St, which is over a 30 minute uphill walk from where it appears on the map! You can find the actual hotel location on Google maps by searching for "234 Yafo Road, Jerusalem" instead of 234 Jaffa Road. The map shown on Expedia and Bing has no local streets, so it was of no help in determining the actual location. Aside from the location being different from what we expected (and obviously the hotel staff are not to blame for that), the hotel was great. The service is good, and the rooms were the cleanest and best-kept that we found in our whole trip through Israel. The rooms are a bit small and spartan by American standards, but compared to other Israeli hotels in its price range it is rather lavish. Breakfast was also good and offered a lot of choices. The street noise was fine, considering that we were right next to the bus station. The windows block sound very well. However, I think the noise will get to be more of a problem when the Jerusalem Light Rail line opens in 2011 or so, as I've lived near a light rail line in Boston and I know the trains can make a bit of a racket. I would recommend this hotel to other travelers, assuming you want to stay near the bus station and not nearer to the center of town.

“too expensive for what you get”

The pluses of this hotel are location, location, location. Small rooms, not too comfortable beds, poor-quality toiletries and tiny bathroom made this hotel worth way less than what we paid. Staff was friendly, breakfast not bad and location was convenient.

“Our stay at Jerusalem Gold Hotel”

Our stay at Jerusalem Gold Hotel was wonderful, specially the staff was very polite and helpful. Thanks for your service, thanks for learning other languages such as English, Spanish, by knowing other languages you are able to help the tourists who visit Jerusalem. The food was very delicious, specially the breakfast, I thought I was going to have to eat only pitas and humus was that was not the case. We had such a great time.
