“A Lovely Hotel”

Hotel situated in Sultanahmet district on the Europe side of the City so very convenient for sightseeing (Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace etc). Good location for access to/from Ataturk airport but it would take time to reach from Sabiha Gokcen (especially during rush hour). Public transport is the best way to get around rather than car (tram, metro or ferryboat) and you can buy a top up card for this. Hotel itself was clean and tidy, the room was very large and very nice, the Owner and staff always willing to help. Only issue with the hotel at the time was the building work going on next door but it was off season, during the daytime only and maintenance has to be done at some stage. Location of the hotel in the oldest part of the City means that the streets are narrow, cobbled and steep (not ideal for the infirm). There are plenty of basic restaurants in the area to get food but it pays to look around before you choose one. Would recommend this hotel to any couple on holiday.

“A Taste of Istanbul”

Overall a great Hotel / Suite, had a wonderful time there. Was situated in the heart of sultanahmet so everything was in walking distance. Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a unique stay in Istanbul.

“Istanbul accomodation recommended”

From the moment we arrived we were made more than welcome by Deniz and all of his helpful staff. Villa Sphendone Suites are literally five minutes walk from the Blue Mosque and Hippodrome and not much further from a major tram route., and although the route is uphill we had no difficulty. (We're in our sixties) We always felt safe when walking to and from our accomodation. Deniz is a mine of information which we found invaluable. Because of him we were able to make the most of our stay and explore the many sights both historic and modern. Nothing seems to be too much for him. Our accommodation was clean and tidy with all necessary amenities - the jacuzzi bath was a real boon after lengthy explorations. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

When to go

Late September was ideal - with temperatures in the mid 20's, most comfortable for getting around the city.

Getting around

Local transport, buses and trams, are great once you take the plunge and local people are only too pleased to help and assist even if there is no common language.

“Great for family with toddler and baby”

Our room was huge (especially for a European hotel). It was clean and appropriate for our children. The location was phenomenal. Breakfast was great too.

Taksim - if you don't want to stay in Sultanahment or surrounding areas, Taksim is great - busy, tourist stuff to do and all of the services you would need as well as convenient public transit.

“Greatest place to stay and greatest staff ever”

I was extremely pleased with this hotel. At first, my mother and I were not sure about the place. It was so different from the 4 and 5 star hotels we were used to. However, within a day's time, we could not think of any other better place to be. My mother, in particular, kept calling the hotel "home" because the place felt like home. The manager, Denis, was very kind and his staff were the most helpful people I have ever encountered. The room was large and comfortable, much bigger than a traditional hotel room. The bathroom was clean and well maintained. The hotel is in a great location. Everything is within walking distance, but if you are not inclined to walk, as my mother and I are not, there were always cabs available. We were very happy. I plan to go back to Turkey one day. If I do, I am only staying at the Villa Sphendone.

Area recommendations

All of Istanbul is amazing. The bazaars are a blast. The Arasta Bazaar is within walking distance from the Villa Sphendone and it was filled with kind and helpful merchants. However, make sure to have a couple of liras, especially if you plan to use the WC as they charge you to do so :)

“Superb place to stay.”

The hotel itself was close to everything. We walked everywhere, no need for a car if you stay here. The staff was wonderful and we had the best service from all of them. They were helpful, friendly and took great care of us while on our trip.

“Loveley Hotel in Istanbul Old Town”

Very comfortable, excellent large room. Extremely helpful and friendly owner who speaks excellent English. Location is 5 mins walk from Blue Mosque. very handy for all Old attractions.

“Great location, friendly, quiet, comfortable”

Great location for historical city. Few minutes to Palace, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and tram stops for the rest of the city, but also a quiet neighbourhood. No busy traffic or late-night clubs nearby. Really appreciated the breakfast, which they were happy to serve at any time of the morning. All staff helpful and positive at all times. Bedroom was comfortable and pleasant. Wifi didn't work as advertised - had to go to the hotel kitchen. That's the only reason for the 4 grade, not 5. If you're not a geek like me then who cares?

“Attentive and friendly service at a very special small hotel”

Great quiet location near the Hippodrome just a short walk to the Blue Mosque and Aya Sophia. Comfortable warm rooms and plenty of hot water. Perfect for the snow and windy weather we experienced. Deniz and the rest of the staff very helpful; the service could not be faulted.

Area recommendations

The tourist choice seems to be between Sultanahmet and Taksim. Each has something in its favour. In Sultanahmet you get the key sites and a conservative muslim community. In Taksim it is more lively with the bright lights of a busy European metropolis. Take your pick, they both have their advantages.

Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Aya Sophia, Cisterns, Spice Market, a hamam, Mosaic museum, the Taksim tram, the walk down from Taksim to the Golden Horn, the Church of St Sergius and St Bacchus, the Topkapi Palace.
