“Very convenient location”
I liked the Alzer. I had a single room with a double bed. It was small but if you're on vacation you don't spend too much time in the room anyway. I chose the hotel both for its location and the free wi-fi. I teach college classes online and like to be able to keep in touch with students and work while traveling. The Alzer advertised this and it delivered well. The breakfast was OK. The Alzer is located in the Sultanahmet district of Istanbul, which is the main tourist area. The Hippodrome is less than 30 metres from the hotel entrance and the Blue Mosque is just across the Hippodrome. Other well known sites are within walking distance. There is a tram station at the opposite end of the Hippodrome from the hotel so the Alzer is very well located in terms of public transport. Istanbul is a big, big city and the reason you go there will determine where you stay. However, if you're going as a tourist then the Alzer is the perfect place to stay while there.
“Nancy the traveler”
When we started planning our trip to Istanbul, I contacted 2 friends who have been there already. They both said to stay at Alzer Hotel (and they didn't even know each other!). We had 2 rooms, with one being bigger than the other (the one w/ the queen bed was bigger than the one w/ 2 twins). The rooms w/ the view of the Blue Mosque is their primo rooms and costly, so we didn't stay there. It didn't really matter too much, as you could go up to the top and look out at the Blue Mosque whenever you wanted. Breakfast was fine. We even ate dinner there one night, when one of the members' of our group wasn't feeling well and didn't want to go out at night. The front desk got the cook up to us. As I said, we were there when the hotel had many cancellations, so the service was extra-good. Also, my son needed to be taken to the airport at 0330. We talked to the front desk the day before and they arranged a taxi for him. They were also nice when we asked about changing money. They said they could do it but the rate would not be so good, and they told us where to go for a good rate.
“Great location but otherwise very average”
We were very excited initially when cab drove onto street where hotel is located but upon parking in front of hotel we immediately realized Alzer was not going to be a 4 Star hotel as advertised. The lobby was narrow and relatively dark. A very small elevator took us to our 3rd floor room that seemed smaller than our cabin on the Windstar Cruise ship we had just occupied for seven days! The bathroom was clean and appeared recently renovated but there was no counter space for toiletry items, etc. The buffet breakfast that was included in our room price was disappointing. There were no fresh fruit served except for a bowl of apples. I would recommend this hotel only for reason that it is right near most major tourist sights in Istanbul. We were able to easily walk to most everything we wanted to see and that is a big advantage given the congested Istanbul traffic. We were also surprised to find out that September is one of the busiest tourist months for Istanbul. Would recommend going there in October or late spring.
“Ideal base”
The hotel is clean, comfortable and friendly with good breakfasts. We found it an ideal base for visiting this lovely city. It is within easy walking distance to the tram service which provided access to all parts of the city and the ferries. Hope to return some time.
“Brilliant location - the REAL Istanbul”
While many of the luxury chain hotels are situated on Taksim Square, this is quite a way from the action. The Alzer, on the other hand, is situated right in the heart of the city and is directly opposite the Blue Mosque so you only have to cross the road to get to the gem. This is the real Istanbul, 2 mins from Hagia Sophia, 10 mins walk from the Grand Bazaar and at the end of one of the main streets with literally hundreds of restaurants so if you want to experience the city then this is an ideal place to stay. It only has 20 odd rooms so is small and very friendly with excellent staff. Buffet breakfast is served in the rooftop restaurant with stunning views. We stayed here following a recommendation from a friend and it lived up to her comments. We were also lucky to be in Istanbul for the start of Ramadan so it is a great experience to mix with the locals as the square outside come alive at dusk with picnics and food sellers for the end of the days fasting. You soon get used to the loud calls to prayers from the Blue Mosque too - all adds to the authentic experience rather than the more sterile chain hotels.
“Perfect location”
This hotel is located in a perfect position to see all Istanbul's sights. The staff is helpful, the hotel and rooms are well maintained and comfortable. As an independant hotel it does not reach the standards of luxuary chain hotels but is ofa good standard.
“Great Hotel”
This hotel is in a brilliant location, directly opposite the Blue Mosque. It was clean and comfortable with a small but well-equipped room. Staff were very friendly and breakfast was excellent with fantastic views from the terrace. We would thoroughly recommend it.
“It's ok, but not relaxing”
Hotel Alzer has a great location if you want to see all the big sights. We thought it would be great to stay so close to the mosque - we were right and wrong. Views are great. But unless you like being woken up at 5am every day by the INCREDIBLY loud call to prayer (on a multi-speaker tannoy system), then this isn't the place for you. I was being naive when I thought the call to prayer was still done by a man on a tower... For a 'four star', our room was pretty, but very small, and the shower room had a huge floor to ceiling crack in the tiles and sometimes smelt faintly of sewage. You could also hear everything going on in the other bathrooms. On the plus side, staff are helpful. But if, like me, you are looking for a special treat from your hotel, I wouldn't come here. In hindsight, I would stay in Beyoglu. Much nicer area, not as touristy.
