One person running the hotel , this hotel may have been nice 50 years ago , it’s outdated, the shower didn’t work , I couldn’t stay the three nights I paid for , way overpriced. I will not be staying there again .

We knew the hotel would be very old and thought it would be an experience. We were disappointed that the room was dirty. The floor was so dirty that my white socks were black on the bottom after walking around in the room without my shoes on. The bedside table was sticky and had rings from the previous guest's drinks. The bathroom floor was also dirty. We were upgraded to a suite which was nice but the window air conditioner in the bedroom part did not work well and we were pretty uncomfortable on a warm summer night.

My stay was very disappointing. Floors were buckled. Couch was dirty. Sheets had brown stains. Breakfast was boxed donuts that were day old or more. No coffee. Milk was sitting on counter all morning. Glass tables in dining area had food smudges all over.

Hi Jill, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We agree, "a bad day with coffee is better than a good day without it!" While all of our breakfast items are purchased fresh, we do have a new coffee maker and are back to serving coffee every morning with breakfast! We hope you will come stay with us again soon and have a cup of freshly brewed coffee.

A good value for a hotel with character
This is an inexpensive place to stay in a historic hotel. What it lacks in modern amenities it makes up for in character. It is in the midst of a historic downtown. The manager was hard contact, he left the key on the desk and didn’t respond quickly to a call to explain it. If you had needed any help, it was not there.

3rd time not a charm.
Unlikely to stay again. Unfortunately, downtown Chanute with charming historic buildings, doesn't have the enough draw to sustain it. Many empty historically significant buildings for sale. Included in the structures for sale is The Nest. 3 years ago it showed promise, but now it seems to be quickly running down into just another direlect hotel. It is clear the owner has lost interest in it. If you like historic buildings, stay here for the night, but don't expect much outside of the lobby. No amenities and ghost service. It could thrive if the downtown could be revived but I'm doubtful. Forget about using WiFi. It was workable my first two stays but was pathetic this time. I had to use my phone as a Hotspot to get some work done.

Once you check in I never saw anyone again even when I left. Everything I needed was in my room so there really was no need of any assistance. I came & went as I needed. Their is No Breakfast available. They do have small coffee pots with a assortment of coffees to choose from. Also a microwave & small refrigerator which I didn’t use. Also vending machines with assortment of pop & one with a few chips in main lobby. I was traveling alone when I stayed there but they had posted in office they had security with cameras. My room was on the fourth floor which I felt perfectly safe. I’d stay there again! No problems! Also there is a train track down the street that comes thru once in awhile which didn’t really bother me.

2nd stay, will stay again, safe area & parking.
I reserved a room 1 1/2 hours in advance and appreciate that H.com and The Nest accommodated the late booking. Last minute stay due to work demands. I've stayed here before so I knew what to expect. On my prior overnight, there was a breakfast and coffee available in the "breakfast area". I checked the site and breakfast has been removed from 'Amenities', but the photo of breakfast area is still up. Coffee pot in room with Folgers. I usually travel with French Press so bad hotel coffee doesn't normally bug me. Cord on pot too short to reach from top of fridge to outlet. Had to move pot to bedside table & unplug clock to make a cup of coffee. A carafe of coffee set out in the lobby around 5 or 6 am would be appreciated. Hall and lobby hot but room was cooled adequately by window ac units. View of downtown out windows was not possible. These are original windows that haven't seen ammonia and a squeegee in years. Clean glass for the view would have been appreciated. Bed was comfortable, water pressure was good and water was hot. WiFi very weak on 3rd floor At less than -80 dBM. WiFi signal should be mapped and boosters installed. I used my phone as a hotspot for my laptop in order to email and use the internet. Area is safe, yet I understand how a woman traveling alone or someone staying for the 1st time could feel insecure in the unstaffed lobby. I prefer unique, historic, quirky lodging and this is all 3. It is not boutique but bargain rates reflect that.

This is a truly beautiful, unique hotel! I have stayed at some of the other places in Chanute and have not been impressed. But honestly this experience was one of the most enjoyable hotel stays I've ever had in a small community. The room was very clean and tastefully decorated. The bed was extremely comfortable and the staff are so friendly! I'm going to recommend this place as a weekend retreat for my employer!

WOW! Glad I gave this downtown gem a try!
I had a bad experience at the new hotel out on the highway (wifi/filth/rude) so someone told me to try this place. The staff were really nice and the room was extremely clean. The bed was comfy and I loved being able to walk around downtown in the evening and grab a few drinks here and there without driving anywhere. This is a beautiful historic hotel with a lot of attention to detail. The room had a refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot with wood floors - none of that nasty carpet that you don't know if it is clean or not (everyone travels with pets these days!). You never know what you are going to get with independent hotels but this place exceeded my expectations - they even have several laundry rooms that I was able to wash my clothes in at no charge, just bring your own detergent! The wifi was lightening fast and when I mentioned something the manager said they are on the city's fiber network which is 1GB - way cool! I have just started being in Chanute once every week or two and this is DEFINITELY the place I will be staying!

The building is amazing and the stay was pleasant. We only saw someone in the office upon check in, the floor in our room needs to be cleaned. We confirmed with desk clerk that there was breakfast, which never happened which caused a little disappointment as that was why we decided on The Nest.

Hi Roberta, We're sorry we missed you! As a boutique hotel, our staff wears many hats. We were likely attending to the needs of another guest at the time. When this is the case, we leave a phone on the front desk with instructions to direct-dial the Manager on Duty. He or she will always be available to check you in within seconds. If security is your concern, be encouraged! We're located on the main downtown intersection (meaning plenty of cameras), the police station is a half block south, AND Kansas is a proud supporter of the 2nd Amendment. We've got you covered! Please consider us for your next stay in town. We'd love to have you. Til then, Eric

Response from Todd Johnson, Proprietor on 10 Mar 2018
Dawn, We do NOT have cockroaches in our hotel. The large bug you squished that you claimed to be a cockroach was in fact a water beetle. Since this is on an upper floor and no other water beetles (or any other bugs) were in this rooms or any others, it may have traveled in with you or someone else. We have used the same pest control company since I purchase the hotel in 2004 and I have been extremely pleased with the preventative things they do on a monthly basis to keep us from having pest problems. Of course we refunded your money immediately when you wanted to check out early. I hope you will reconsider your one star review because it is not valid. - Todd Johnson, Proprietor

Great rate, average room/amenities
The old Tioga hotel building has seen better days, but I love to experience a unique, historic building. The lobby is grand, and the ballroom on the first floor looks to be the nicest rentable facility in town. This is a great place if you're not spending your entire day... in our $59 room, we had good tv & wifi, but also annoying gnats. Fridge, microwave & coffeepot all worked fine as well. It was the size of an average bedroom with teensy bath & closet. Makes us curious to see what the suites are like. Staff friendly, breakfast perfectly average; great rate for a room and free breakfast/wifi. Little issue with room key but it was courteously resolved.

Rustic. Very basic. Not well maintained.
This is a historic building, so don't expect anything up to date. I was disappointed that basic cleaning was not done. No housekeeping service during our 3 day stay. The tub was peeling and there were chunks of paint inside and around the tub. It wasn't horrible, but it was definitely sub par for the price. I loved the charming look of the lobby and even the room. I just wish it had been cleaner. They say they have internet, but we never got it to work on any of our devices.

Nice Historic Hotel
Nice historic hotel. It was really convenient for my show site. Staff was great and extremely courteous and helpful. Due to being on the northwest corner of the building in 20 degree weather my room was just a touch colder than I like. But the front desk girl got me an electric heater to supplement the radiators and it was comfortable then.

Hotel website is very misleading
1. Booked a room with two queen beds, when we were ready to check in, no staff onsite, but we had to call and they told us they gave away our room, only thing they had left was a single queen with a leather couch. 2. Staff were never on site. 3. The BED was about to fall down. Literally, I cannot make this up, the headboard and footboard had about 12" of leaning in one direction or the other! I have a video! 4. Extra pillows were dirty with hair on them and dirt with no pillow cases for the person sleeping on the old worn out leather couch (really the dark brown leather color had rubbed off and no springs) 5. Blankets were the 1960 brillo pad version. 6. Nine degrees outside and the window heaters in the room did not work properly. 7. One light bulb, one plug in that worked in the entire room. 8. The website is very misleading, it shows and describes a completely different experience. I had a co-worker that stayed the same week, but multiple nights and he described the same experience. 9. The room faced the main street, lots of street noise for this little town. 10. I do not recommend this unless it's your last resort. Go north 20 miles to the next town.

A lovely, quaint little town and hotel!
A nice, quaint little place to stay in a small city. Located right in the heart of the downtown area where there is shopping and dining all within walking distance of the hotel. A museum and city library is a block away which used to be the town's train station. There is an art museum directly behind the hotel in the same block. A movie theatre is only a couple of blocks away, and there is a great place to eat called the Grain Bin directly behind that which is open for breakfast and lunch; closes at 2 PM. There are beautiful Victorian-style homes located on some of the streets in the city if you enjoy driving around looking at that sort of thing. Many of the streets are still brick which adds to the quaintness.

Room was clean. Shower was a bit sketchy, so we skipped that piece. Breakfast was ok. Onsite staff was fairly non-existent from what we saw, but I didn't mind. The window blind came crashing down in the middle of the night which was terrifying, but it is an old hotel, so I get it. Great charm, though
