“Hush... Let's keep this little secret to ourselves.”
Twice a year I travel to Hong Kong to visit two Electronic Trade events. One at the Convention Centre and the other at Asia World Expo at Hong Kong Airport. So The Silvermine Beach Hotel seemed the ideal 'half way house'. And indeed it was! The hotel has just acquired new owners and already signs of renovation are being noticed. I'm sure bookings for 2012 will offer guests a much better living' experience'. Having said that, the rooms were clean although in need of modernisation. I am looking forward to revisiting again in October 2012, and would certainly recommend to other expo visitors! The thirty minute ferry ride from nearby the hotel (8 mins walk) takes you right into the heart of Hong Kong at Central Pier which for me was then a short taxi ride (approx $3US) to the convention centre. Going the other way the four times daily A35 bus takes you from the ferry/bus terminal to HK Airport for those visiting the Asia Expo complex, or that don't have "sea legs"! Summing up - a very nice simple and uncomplicated hotel which can only get better under the new ownership.
“Off the beaten track”
I felt I was off in the middle of no-where. It was very quiet and when you walk out the hotel door you are on the beach. The beach was almost empty & I enjoyed walking along it after supper. Very peaceful. However, the taxi cost about 70 HKD to get to the hotel from the airport and the taxi driver wouldn't take my Octopus card - cash only. I was able to exchange $ at the hotel lobby or I'd have been stuck. The hotel had me booked on a higher floor, but when they saw I had luggage, without me asking, they upgraded me to the new wing on the ground floor because the hotel has no elevator. There is a ferry terminal within walking distance that connects you to the rest of Hong Kong. I'd recommend the hotel if you are wanting to stay for a while to explore Lantau island, but it's not the most convenient if you are just needing a place to crash before or after a flight.
“What a gem!”
We arrived at Silvermine beach Hotel after having stayed in HK city for 2 nights and upon arrival felt a bit sheepish that we had not just stayed in Miu Wo for the entire trip. It is only a short walk from the ferry (which is a cheap half hour trip to HK central) to the Hotel. What a world away from the crazy cramped city this is. So quiet and peaceful (and very cheap). The staff were helpful (the exchange rate offered by the hotel was 8% better than other sellers). The pool is very nice as well. Although the hotel is a little dated, it's clean, comfy and alll the amenities work well, much more spacious than you'll find in the city for a quarter of the price. The only thing that wasn't that awesome was the food, but the cooked food market is a 5 minute stroll away and very cheap anyway. Overall I highly recommend this quaint little gem and if I need accom again around HK I will stay here.
“Do not use this Hotel.”
The hotel is very run down and staff though appearing helpful are not that helpful as they can not solve any of the problems. Swimming pool listed but has not been in operation for the last two months and will not be for the near future. Always being maintained and not available for swimming but the life guard swims in it everyday. Hotel has been sold and staff do not care. Internet promised but charged for at extortionate rate. They charge $15 per case to handle them and $10 per case for storage. Double room booked and confirmed but given a twin and even though confirmed sea view - no sea-view on booking. Excuse fully booked. Bar has happy hour but only for certain drinks. The hotel was the only disappointment in the whole island as every one and everything around the island was great. Expedia needs to take this hotel off their books.
“Great location, lovely staff noisy room”
You couldn't find a better position, almost on the beach with stunning views of the bay in front and hills behind. Mui Wo is a lovely little town with all the facilities you could wish for, from the convenience of the ferry port, friendly China Bear bar, civic amenities like pool, health centre etc. It is clean, lively and feels like a real community. Staff in the hotel are lovely - invariably friendly, helpful and polite. My only criticisms are of the boring, bland menu which is neither Asian nor European but rather institutional and the noise of the boilers/ air con or something that roared all night in our room. I understand the hotel is being refurbished so hope these issues will be addressed. The price was reasonable, internet access appreciated and I would recommend it happily, but with the above reservations.
“Lovely Location - A Slice of Old Hong Kong”
We decided to stay at the Silvermine Beach Hotel because, on this trip to Hong Kong, we didn't want the full urban experience. We wanted to chill out somewhere a little off the beaten track - but with good links to the airport and Hong Kong Island. The Silvermine Beach Hotel ticked all our boxes. It is situated right across the road from a lovely bay and surrounded by lush hills. The sea front is dominated by small village houses and fishing boats moor on the silver river. There is a local market and very good local seafood restaurants with balconies over the water. The bus station and ferry terminal are five minutes walk from the hotel. Though the hotel decor is a little tired, our second floor room was very comfortable, with tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge, lovely comfortable pillows and queen bed, and a table and chairs overlooking a stunning view of the beach. The hotel is fully air conditioned. Staff were unfailingly cheerful, gracious and helpful. We rather liked the 1960s feel of the place. I was born in Hong Kong and this felt like a visit to my past. There are two supermarkets near the bus station for supplies. The ferry journey on the slow ferry to Hong Kong takes 3/4 of an hour or twenty minutes on the fast ferry. The bus to the airport takes half an hour. We found our stay on Lantau to be magical and would stay in the Silvermine Beach Hotel again. If you like character and peace we would recommend it.
“Not impressed”
Staying only 1 night is not too bad, the hotel description stayed price include breakfast, they charge HK$180 for breakfast, you can get a very good breakfast 5 minutes from the hotel for HK$38 in one of the local Chinese restaurant. One consolation, the surrounding scenery is brilliant.
“Lovely location but shabby”
We enjoyed our 2 night stay at this hotel although the hotel is shabby and could do with some updating. It could be stunning with a little tender loving care! The view from our room was lovely overlooking the bay and the breakfast was very good. It is very handy for the ferry to central Hong Kong which takes half an hour on the fast ferry. The bed was clean and the shower was hot. It is in a very peaceful spot and it was good to have a nightcap outside on the terrace after an extremely busy day in Hong Kong. It could be a bit cleaner but the staff were very helpful and it was easy getting to the airport by taxi for our early morning flight.
“Perfect for us”
Everything we needed. 1/2 hr taxi from airport cost c£15. Swimming beach across the road. Quiet - out of season. Good view from our room. Regular & cheap ferries to HK Island 1/2hr or 1hr depending on price . Friendly helpful staff. Decor a bit shabby but overall excellent value.
“Inexpensive HKG airport hotel”
-relatively inexpensive -relatively close to airport -located in tranquil village -somewhat rundown -no elevator -close to hawker stands -bottom line - good for overnight stay
