“Small rooms”

The bedroom was far too small for 2 people with large bags. The service at breakfast was overly efficient, with plates and cups being taken away virtually as soon as you put them down. The feeling was they wanted us out of there as fast as possible.

“A pleasant hotel”

I was happy with my stay at this hotel. I had a comfortable and quiet room and the service was very good. I particularly liked the regular bus service from/ to the airport ( not available 24 hrs) which was easy to use as I travel on my own and have phobia of taxis- that is why, whenever I can, I book hotels which provide either their own transport or have a convenient arrangement with another provider. I enjoyed an evening snack with live music ( something I would not normally enjoy but here it was light, not loud, and I was not talking to anyone) and their red house wine was very good. The breakfast choice and price was comparable to other similar hotels but, in my experience, the breakfast menu as described in the room was totally different to the one provided. The location was close to the tram service and there was a bus close by but metro required about 15 min walk according to the information I was given. The hotel is in an area full of dried fish shops with a very local atmosphere but perfectly safe to walk on one's own including the evenings. Those who have consulted Loneley Planet's guidebook on China my like to know that the recommended walk in the guide starts close to the hotel and covers several points of interest. I would stay at this hotel again.

Other
I found Chinese people ( Hong Kong and mainland China) very friendly but their selling techniques are not something I appriciate. One should be careful when booking tours as they can be economic with truth or totally misleading. In my experience the brochure included a visit to a fishing village and mentioned a short boat trip which was optional, making it clear that one had to pay for it. What it did not make clear is that the only way to get to the village was by a boat. Although the cost was very small it is the principal of the thing that matters and there are those who do not feel compfortable on the water. Worse was the tour which stated that one either spent few hrs in a particular town or had an option to do other tours within that time. It turned out that staying in the town was not possible and there was a strong pressure to pay for the additional tours. However I have heard much worse stories from other travellers regarding the tours they have booked. It is a very short sighted way of doing business as it does not generate good reputation on which all businesses depend.

“Nice Hotel”

Hotel is Located very close to a Tram Stop, and also a quick 10 -15 minute walk to the MTR Station. Staff are very friendly and will do what they can to assist you.

“Excelleny hotel!!”

Overall, I thought the hotel was excellent. My stay was very comfortable, the staff went out of their way if I needed anything (especially those working in the Business centre on the 27th floor) & the views from the hotel were excellent. The only issue is the distance from the nearest MTR station. It is a good 15-20 min walk away from the nearest station. If you don't like walking so much, I would suggest you look at other hotels. Other than that, I was impressed by this hotel and will definitely stay here again next time I visit Hong Kong.

“Always like going back to it”

I have been staying at the Island Pacific Hotel regularly for quite a few years as I come to Hong Kong several times a month. Personally I like it quite a bit as the dedicated staff has always impressed me with their level of servies and engagement. The rooms are of decent size compared to other hotels in HK ( very small in international standards but that is HK for you...), clean and functional. I know some people do not like the area in the western part of town. Personally, I actually like it a lot, in spite of the smell of fish and being crowded. To me this looks like old HK and not just another modern glossy city without identity. I will continue to go back to this hotel because it is reasonably priced, honest and real, and because the staff do their best.

When to go
Be very careful of timing when you book hotels in HK. The prices sky rocket when there is a fair going on in town.

“Excellent tourist hotel if you get a good deal”

Very good tourist class hotel, excellent value if you get a good deal. Good size room, very clean, tea and coffee facilities, iron and board and best of all - free WiFi. Previously I have stayed at the Mandarin Oriental, where they charge a significant sum for WiFi access. Why is it the more expensive the hotel, the more likely you are to pay for the internet? Well done, Island Pacific. Also good pool. Location is fine, just a quick tram ride from Central.

“SMALL TINY ROOMS”

The rooms are extremely small. There was hardly any room to put any luggage. Otherwise, everythingelse was as expected. The location is accessible by tram from almost any part of Hong Kong Island. The tram is half block away and costs only HK$ 2.3 to go anywhere but you need exact change. The buffet costs HK$ 152 and had a very good selection and very good service.

“Can't Beat the Price!”

Not in $400 a night neighborhood but just down the street. Easy access to everything in Central and taxis are extremely cheap and easy to use. Would definitely recommend and return.

Western District, Hong Kong: Get a feel for the Hong Kong of old. Start at the Chinese Central Market (the tender-hearted should avoid the lower floors, where poultry butchering takes place) on the corner of Queen Victoria Street and meander down narrow laneways where herbalists and other traditional shopkeepers display their wares. Don’t miss the world’s longest outdoor escalator, at 880 meters, which also provides sweeping district views.
