Great location but desperately needs improvement

Posted 15-Jun-2014
Pros: The location is superb and the building itself is impressive if a little rambling.
Cons: I was so very disappointed - I have stayed in many Irish 5 star hotels all were world class - this was very poor. Need a management overhaul IMO
Location: Perfect - convenient for city airport and Belfast. Great seaside walks nearby, great food nearby in the city and lots of golf and wonderful scenery
It could be debated whether this hotel actually qualifies as 5 star - the facilities are all there but the delivery of them and condition thereof is very poor. When I arrived at the door to offload my heavy luggage and have the car parked, the doorman disappeared inside, and never appeared again. I had to offload and leave my bags outside whilst I parked the car. Checkin was chaotic, the girl got my name wrong and said my company had booked me without breakfast - it was a private booking but she thought I worked for Expedia! On check out I asked for help and the receptionist asked the doorman who replied (and I kid you not) "a bus has just arrived I'm too busy". I had to load the bags myself and fetch my own car. My room was tired and the small bathroom was chipped and stained from age and there was no hand shower. The bed and linen were fine. No shoe cleaning facilities anywhere in the hotel that i discovered. The staff in general were friendly but the suited managers running around avoided eye contact at all times. I stayed three nights and on my last morning I decided to have breakfast at the hotel. The continental buffet was a disgrace. Absolutely the worst buffet I have ever seen outside a guest house. Miniscule and tired choices Upon checkout the bill was for a full breakfast at 20GBP when it should have been 16 and they had the cheek to check it when challenged. I did complain about all the above at checkout but it was ignored with a "have a good day".

Lovely hotel but let down but a few small things

Posted 26-Oct-2013
Pros: The food and the view from the restaurant.
Cons: Housekeeping could be better.
Location: Very handy for Belfast and Bangor.
We stayed 3 nights at this hotel in mid-Oct. It is very impressive internally and externally and has great views. However, the bathroom was very cramped and not 5* in my opinion. The bed was massive and very comfortable. The food in the Mitre was wonderful, and it was quite good in the Cultra Inn as well. There were no hand-towels when we arrived but they did provide them after we complained. Also, there were no sachets of coffee provided on the third day. Although these are minor niggles I would expect things to be better in a 5* hotel.

Great hotel

Great hotel - but very disappointed in being told to make a booking for dinner at Cultra Inn at 5pm since no bookings until 8:30pm. We weren't hungry at 5pm! We went anyway and the place was not busy when we left at 6:30pm! I spoke to the restaurant manager who apologised and offered a free lunch the next day - which was appreciated, but we already had plans that day. Also the bed was very luxurious - but had a pillow topping type mattress and I prefer a firm mattress and woke up in agony with a dodgy back the next day! I would request a firm mattress in the future if that is possible?! All in all, we had a fantastic stay.

Excellent hotel - Top notch

Posted 16-Sep-2013 on Hotels.com
On arrival we were quickly checked in and offer helped to our room. The spa was nice but limited to pool, jacuzzi and steam room. Breakfast was very good, service always excellent. The bar has 12 gin selections which is rare but wry much appreciated.
