“Good, but could be better.”

The location of the hotel is great as it was walking distance to a lot of tourist areas in the city. You staying fairly close to a shopping mall. There are many bars around the hotel as well if you want to go for an evening drink. The room was clean and comfortable. You have access to a safe to store your important belongings you don't want to carry around with you everyday. Washrooms are clean. There was a window in the suite but it was facing another building a few meters away. I stayed in the deluxe suite. Tour packages are available and through at frontdesk. After some broken english, you can still manage to book some great day excursion trips. I'm a fairly easy tennant I would say. I stay relatively tidy and am pretty low maintenance. I even declined the maid service one day when I happened to still be in the room. The young lady seemed so happy that she could skip mine. I would of given the hotel a better service rating if not during check out they had someone check the room and they reported back I consumed their beverages and printed me a bill. This was not the case of course. With the language barrier and me running late for my flight, I paid the bill and moved on instead of battling it out. 21 USD is not that much to fight over, but just the principle of it was not right. I read somewhere prior to booking, that this happened to someone else as well. The sour taste left at the end doesn't warrant me to return. I'll try much luck elsewhere.

“Would go back to stay”

The hotel was great. It was recommended to me from a friend and met my expectations. The hotel was charming and comfortable. Service was excellent and timely. I will always try to stay at this hotel when in Saigon.

“Worth the money”

The service was good. The room was spacious and had a great view. Unfortunately the windows did not close fully which can be annoying considering the noise from the streets. The doors cannot be closed by the handle so in the morning one gets woken up by slamming doors. Any queries(e.g. shower not working) were handled immediately and successfully. For those who like fruits the breakfast menu has lots of it. I personally didn't like the Vietnamese coffee and would have wished they'd had some Italian coffee. But you can get anywhere in the streets. The breakfast is up on the 11th floor with a nice panorama view. I reckon one can even sit outside on the veranda I didn't ask. All in all a nice place to stay if you have the room I had. However there are rooms where you stare at the other building's wall and it is rather dark in the room.

Getting around
If you stay in the Ruby1 all the sites can be reached on foot. At first it takes a bit of orientation skills but it is feasible. I walked to the big market and back as well as to the War remnant museum, the Cathedral, Reunification Square and so on. Plus you get to see more of the city and some nice places where it is worthwhile eating (look for the posh cars...).

“Central location, courteous staff, nice rooms”

The hotel was fairly centrally located, just a few minutes walk from the Opera House, but on a relatively quiet street. The staff were courteous and friendly. The room itself, while smallish, had nice decor and was impeccably clean. Wireless internet was a big plus. Pretty extensive breakfast buffet, although food quality was mediocre (except for the freshly-prepared omellette!) The only real downside was that the hotel lobby had a weird kind of feel to it, with a bit of a haphazard design.

“Asian Ruby 1 Saigon Dec 2010”

Staff were great and eager to help. The room was great with a safe, a mini bar and a great bed. Breakfast was simple but adequate and the location is very central. Western travellers should be aware that like a lot of areas in Vietnam english is limited so try to pick up a few key phrases ..... the locals are very patient and love to play charades.

Area recommendations
District 1 is a good area to start from as it was fairly central for all that I needed.
Getting around
After researching my trip I was a little nervous about what I heard from other travellers in regards to taxis. Following the advice from other people and knowing roughly what i should be paying was all it took really. Firstly the 3 main companies use meters Vina Sun, Vina Taxi and Mai Linh, I had no trouble from any of these companies; don't use taxis that have similar names, don't use taxis with 2 people in the car and don't use taxis without a meter unless you agree on a price before hand (10 to 1 it'll change when you reach your destination). Nearly every taxi driver i had contact with was your regular hard working bloke making a living; there are w#@$%s out there but be smart and you'll avoid them
Shopping
Ben Thanh market was insane; lots of great stuff. The stall holders are a little pushy but i guess they need to be to stand out, it's all good natured and providing you can keep a smile on your face the banter can be quite enjoyable. I dont do crowds to well but i was good for 3-4 hours it also gets a little humid in there as well. I would suggest going after 08:30 as some of the stalls open late and I would go before 11:30 coz all the tours arrive after lunch and it really packs the place out. As for shopping elsewhere in Saigon there are bargains to be had in every allyway. If you're doin a spot of clothes shopping there are bargains everywhere but if you're large like me...ya dreamin, I found one Tshirt and that took me a long time to find. You can get stuff made great quality and very quickly but i suspect you would get a better deal in Hoi an or Hue.
Other
Traffic...... careful getting around the traffic is insane and generally peoples advice about crossing the road is right but its a hard thing to do the first few times. Just coz you are on the footpath don't think that you are safe... I got skittled commin outta the hotel the first step i took onto the footpath I got cleaned up by a moped.... this was the only accident I saw during my stay so I'm guessing it was my fault, regardless the doorman from the hotel came down the stairs and slapped the absolute p@#s outta the poor bugger that hit me, that was kinda funny. Vietnamese people have no concept of personal space. This is not a critisism just an observation, some people may take this the wrong way as we in western society equate personal space with respect, the Vietnamese are just not like this; they dont line up, they push in and they will talk over you... they aren't being rude its just the way things are done there...... my advice is follow their lead they wont get mad they expect every one to be like this just like we expect everyone to follow our societies idiosycrasies.

“Excellent hotel. Would highly recommend”

Asian Ruby is in the centre of Saigon. It is very close to great shopping and many of the attractions within the city. Restaurants of many varieties were within one city block. No need to travel very far at all. The Asian Ruby assisted with day tours efficiently with reputable tour guides with strong english. This assisted us in a very pleasant experience. Taxis access was abundant and very easy to obtain at any hour. The rooms were very clean, spacious and comfortable. The laundry service was impecable. Highly recommend the quality accommodation at Asian Ruby.

Area recommendations
War Museum is very confronting but the Men found very interesting. Chinese market is much cheaper than the Ben Tang Market. Ben Tang is much cleaner and easier to get around in. Cyclo transport is fabulous. Although you need to get the driver to commit to a price before you leave. Rex Hotel famous for our trapped Australian Reporters on the top floor during 1975. Very well worth while a visit. City tour is a great taster of Ho Chi Ming City (Saigon) Should do this first to allow you more time to go back for longer time.

“OK to stay for a short term”

The hotel is listed as a 3-star hotel on the internet. However, it is not really qualified for a 3-star. Although the hotel staff are friendly and the main Asian Ruby hotel is in good location, the room is tiny and lacks of ammenities such as no clock in room. However, the hotel provides free internet access to guests, which is nice. The daily buffet breakfast is repeatly same food, mostly asian's. Overall, t's a bit pricey to stay for more than a week compared to the hotel's qualities.

Area recommendations
Hotel's location is good, just few blocks away, you can get to the nicest areas in town, Dong Khoi, Le Loi, and Nguyen Hue streets. There, you can find nice coffee shops, restaurants, shopping malls, etc.... also by walking a bit further, you can get to Ben Thanh market, where you can have traditional Vietnamese food and all kinds of VN's artcrafts displayed and sales. Taxi offers a small fee if you tired of walking and it's very easy to catch one.
When to go
March-April is extremely hot, which is nice for beach goers. We went to Phu Quoc island by plane, an hour flight trip. There is also Vung Tau beach side, a 2-hour ride from HCM city, nice beaches, warm and calm water. November-January is the coolest time of the year since Viet Nam is a tropical country. If you want to visit Angkor Wat in Cambodia, you can catch a daily bus in HCM which takes a 12 hours ride to the site with an affordable fee.

“Good but could do better”

The Expedia description promised a balcony, the room didn't even have a window, this is not uncommon in Vietnam, it was too humid to sit out and the upside was there was no traffic noise, quite an achievement in HCMC. Breakfast was good with some unusual items such as Pork Porrage, great view from breakfast restaurant in the 11th floor. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Just one thing, why provide kettle and cups & saucers in the room but no tea, coffee, milk etc. I never did get to the bottom of that one.

“Would definitely stay there again.”

Very good location, close to opera house etc but quiet and out of the noisy areas. Staff very attentive and room was spotlessly clean, and a good size. Breakfast buffet selection also good.
