“Great manta ray viewing at night”

Enjoyed the manta ray viewing and the free fruit punch. Well maintained and clean gardens. However, the building has only 2 elevators for wing 4 and it takes a while to get up to the rooms. The only way to access the parking lot is through the main entrance. Limited dining selection on site. Parking is too far and limited.

Area recommendations
The entire Big Island is great. Our favorite sites are the coastal drive with old trees and hanging philodendrons near Pahoa, the Saddle Road, the road to Mauna Loa, Akaka Falls area, Lava Tree State Park, and the volcanoes. For dining, the Thai restaurant at the town of Volcano and the restaurants at Kona's Ali'i Drive.

“As good as it gets”

This is the place locals from the other side of the island take their families for a weekend getaway. It is a beautiful physical facility, the staff is friendly and helpful. Even though my wife and I were traveling without family it seemed so kid oriented we wish we had brought our kids and grandkids. The menu at the restaurants has limited choices, but excellent quality. I never give 5's, but this is an exception. I marked down location to a 4 because without a car this location would have been a little remote from other non-resort activities. We went during the dead week after Thanksgiving and stayed ten days with only one real problem. They don't serve Coca Cola products and the rum and pepsi didn't make it. We felt like crooks sneaking coke for rum and coke.

Getting around
The big island is BIG and there are lots of things to see. Driving yourself is the best option. The speed limits are quite slow by mainland standards so driving is more relaxed. (Strangely my wife didn't yell that I was driving too fast.) The belt road circles most of the island except for the Northeast coast. If you are planning to drive to the top of Muana Kea you need 4 Wheel drive and check with your vendor to see if they allow you to go where you want to go. e.g. the Waipio valley floor, Muana Kea summit. There are no divided highways to speak of just two way roads. Some have one lane bridges, watch for which way has the yield sign. Take your time and enjoy.

“Thanksgiving Stay at the Sheraton”

Although this is not a new hotel, it is well maintained and very nice. We had a wonderful stay during Thanksgiving. The hotel was not busy but still fully staffed - and we were very well taken care of. The food at the restaurants was decent and not as over-priced as many other hotels. We absolutely loved snorkeling right off the hotel's beach. Although it is a rocky beach that has no easy approach to the water, the snorkeling is amazing if you can find a way in. The manta rays showed up every night we were there - a big bonus for the Sheraton! Another note - as a customer I appreciate that the Sheraton is making a very strong environmental effort. I noticed that the cafe and coffee shop use compostable plates, cups, and cutlery - and the hotel offered a small room subsidy to customers who chose to help the environment each day you opt out of the cleaning service.

Area recommendations
Keauhou Bay - for the climate, the snorkeling, and the convenience of the Kona airport nearby.

“Will Stay Here Again”

We choose this hotel for the proximity to restaurants and the ocean view; both met our expectations. What really impressed us about this hotel was the service. We flew in late to Hilo side of the island, not realizing that our hotel was Kona side. We got lost a few times, and never saw a restaurant. We had a 10 year old who was starving by this time (airplane food was not enough). By the time we got to our hotel, the restaurants had closed. On top of that, we somehow got a room with only one bed. The hotel put a roll away bed in our room for free, and the gentlman who did this also sent up food from their kitchens for our son, even though their restaurant was closed. The only thing I did not like was that it did not seem to get cold in the room (I like 69 degrees at night), so I was sweating every night. Otherwise, this was a great hotel.

Comment from the hotel's management
Aloha! It is always great to hear that we were able to meet our guest's expectations. It sounds as though your evening prior to reaching Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa was somewhat stressful. We're glad that once your family arrived our staff was able to accommodate your needs especially by preparing a bite to eat for your son. We do encourage our guests to share any concerns with us at the time of the stay and we regret that we did not have the opportunity to check to see if the air conditioning was working properly. On your next visit, we hope that you will let us know if there is anything we can do to help create the perfect vacation for you. Mahalo!

“Not at all impressed”

My sister and I just got back and while we were happy with our trip overall the hotel was lacking. The service was fantastic and the employees great, very friendly and helpful. Our problem was the quality of the rooms. Their were stains on the carpet and curtains, the bathroom was very old and it was difficult to flush the toliet. I was expecting so much more then we got. I expected a more modern and less worn room.

Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for expressing your high level of satisfaction with our services. Our staff is committed to ensuring our guests’ time at the resort is memorable and your gracious praise will be passed along to them. We would also like to thank you for the opportunity you’ve given us in announcing that our planned renovation of guest rooms, restaurants and meeting space are close at hand. Guest room renovations are scheduled to begin very early in 2012. It would be our pleasure to welcome you back soon to experience all the wonderful upgrades!
