“What a Surprise”

After reading the reviews on line I didn't expect much. When we arrived at the hotel we noticed it was very large and it was right on the ocean edge. No sandy beach (lava). Our room was an ocean view king bed on the third floor. When we opened the door we were surprised to find what seemed like an absolutely brand new room..The bathroom was all tile, large and extremely clean. The main area was beautiful also. Tile floorswere tile. There was alarge wooden desk, closet and flat screen HD tv.The patio was spacious and we had a beautiful view of the ocean which began below our room. We were treated like royalty by the staff. The only place we will stay on the Big Island. Additionally only 5 minutes to the airport and right arould the corner from "Vernas Place" plate lunches. Very good food. There were also two large shopping malls within 10 minutes from the room..

“Sad”

What was once the premier hotel in Hilo is a paltry shadow of itself. The room felt more like a dorm than a hotel. It has a dilapidated feel. Room was clean, but we could hear the person next door as if they were in OUR room. We changed rooms on arrival, as the room we were originally given smelled like mildew.

“Not even to my worst enemy!!!!”

Im not a princess, i do appreciate spending my hard earned money at a nice place. This hotel was run down, moldy, ghost town appeal. No furniture beside the pool to lay on i had to lay on the chiped pain around the pool. The lot beside this hotel, which was my view by the way, looked like an alley you'd find a dead body at! There is no pub (even though i don't drink) , there is no restaurant! Not even next door or next door to that. Once we had checked into our room we quickly realized after calling the front desk, that the reason we could hear the room 6 doors down flush the toilet and having a shower was due to the tile in the hallways and no insulation anymore because of the "RENO"S" I would never ever ever stay at this hotel ever again. Did I mention the small ants and bugs??? I was so disappointed i literally cryed every evening. Oh and the internet....ya they may want to feed the hamsters they have running it because it took over 20 min for me to fire it up and get as far as the log in page to my hotmail. When i told the front desk she said...."Oh".

Area recommendations
I would recommend camping around the whole island of Hawaii. We spent our first 11 days of our trip doing just this. The Kona side is nice and hot, Hilo....nice damp and rainy, but does have good tourist MUST's to visit.
When to go
We were volunteers for the, "Ford Ironman World Championships", Oct 8. We had so much fun. We were course guides to the cyclists received a free shirt and had an amazing Mahalo Dinner in our honor 2 nights later. First week of October is a must!

“There's not a lot options so pick your poison”

This is an area where there aren't a lot of options for hotels. The location is good but that's about it. It looks like it's under construction but I think it's been under construction for about 10 years

“Has potential”

Location is great and the view of the bay is beautiful. The room is clean. However the hotel is fairly old and run down. It would have great potential after a little renovation.

Area recommendations
Definitely check out the Hilo Farmer's Market.

“Needs some TLC”

The hotel was in a great location for the tour we booked. Unfortunately it seems to me that the owner has not spent any money on updating the hotel. Many empty flower boxes and water features (I think in its day this hotel would have been very popular). Our room was old but lovely (corner suite) and had a beautiful view of the ocean and both sides of the room were all glass which made the room very bright but also warm. The AC did not seem to work very well and we couldn't leave the doors open due to all the bugs. The area of Hilo seems to be very run down and from walking around the area - the Naniloa seems to be one of the better hotels to choose. Minimal facilities and quite a walk from old & new Hilo (not good without a car) but the convenience store next door had everything we needed to get us through the 2 nights. If you are staying in the Hilo area make sure you have a car! The Naniloa definitely served its purpose & if I was ever in Hilo again would probably choose this hotel over the others in the area.

“Can't wait to go back”

Myself and a few of my friends went to visit Hilo for the weekend. We had the Ocean Front rooms. They were wonderful. From the king size bed to the flat screen TV....and the bathroom was just wonderful. The hotel itself was great to walk around and go out by the water and rocks. The staff was friendly and my room was always clean. I can't wait to go back to Hilo and stay at Naniloa Volcanoes Resort.

“Great harbor VIEW”

Great location on Hilo's harbor close to airport. The room was large and newly remodeled and had a fantastic view of the harbor and the mountain Mauna kea. The hotel and grounds are a little rundown but it is currently going through a renovation. We enjoyed our stay!!

“Cold and Stark”

Staying in this hotel requires a lot of walking. The lobby is clear across the hotel from the Lobby and there is not easy access from the parking lots so you have to walk all the way around to the lobby to enter and then all the way across the lobby to take the elevator upstairs. A cold atmosphere inside but beautiful gardens outside. Continental breakfast was brought in and nothing special at all. Even the coffee was mediocre. I'll stay at Uncle Billy's next time.
