Cheap hostel, friendly and relaxed vibe.

We wanted a chilled few days in Hungzhou between bustling Beijing and Shangai. Nice Lake walks or rides to be had with amazing sunset view. Hostel was cheap for the area and you get what you should expect for the price. I loved having two dogs and a cat no play with in the lounge area.

There's lots of character and casual charm in this hostel. I didn't see the dorms, but my private room with en-suite bathroom on the ground floor was all I needed. The gilded wedding sedan-chair in the lounge is unusual d├ęcor - good for photos. The food is mostly western-ish and they make a good omelette. Also if you turn right out of the hostel and walk down by the beautiful gardens/stream, you might find a small eating place with some of the best cheap dumplings and noodles I've tasted in China. Ask staff for directions, it's a bit hard to find. The hostel is a very short walk to the West Lake, and also a short walking distance to Leifeng Pagoda and other local sights.

Great place to stay if exploring West Lake!

Overall, the hostel was fantastic! Great location, just steps to West Lake and the ever-useful bike rental location! A little tricky to find at night as it's set fairly far back from the street behind vegetation (which actually makes it feel like a quiet little cottage retreat!), but not difficult. The only reason I scored a 3 for surrounding neighbourhood is due to the primary school that is literally right beside the hostel. I had read reviews about the extremely loud school next door and figured people were over-reacting a little. They weren't! The school plays VERY loud orchestral music in the morning, presumably during their recess period, but it carries on for quite some time and is quite loud. NOT a problem if you are an early riser (as you should be when travelling!), but if you like to sleep in late, I strongly recommend ear plugs. As it is a school, it's not an issue on the weekends or later in the day. Otherwise, the surrounding area is pretty, quiet, and yet very close to West Lake and surrounding tourist sites. The staff were friendly, efficient, spoke excellent English, and overall extremely helpful!
