Weekend Break with a Spa......

Posted 24-Feb-2015
Pros: The staff, and the quality bedroom furnishings.
Cons: The food! They need a proper restaurant on site. The wine list was not great.
Location: Lots of lovely country pubs and delightful towns and villages.
This was our second choice hotel for the weekend. The room was fine, except that it lacked a mini bar. That said, the room service was courteous and prompt. Our first disappointment was when we went to the Spa, so my wife could book some treatments, we were informed that it was fully booked for the entire weekend. I am disappointed that no slots were kept back for hotel guests to book during their stay. We might as well have booked a cheaper hotel without a spa. Our second disappointment was the Kings Carvery, which was, unfortunately, the best restaurant in the place. Again the staff were lovely but the food was second rate. I ordered the soup to start with and said (due to my dietary restrictions) I couldn't have granary bread and asked them to substitute it for white bread. What arrived was white sliced bread which was hot - having obviously just been defrosted with a microwave. The Carvery itself was mediocre. The meat was dry and it was like a school dinner. Edible, but hardly a special 'weekend treat' meal. The breakfasts were like any other hotel buffet breakfast, ie lukewarm! The staff were all polite, charming and well spoken, but unfortunately the regime they had to implement was rather disappointing.

Great rooms and overall a quality stay

Posted 17-Feb-2015 on Hotels.com
Very nice hotel, with fantastic rooms and great facilities. Not the cheapest, but good value and always helpful staff. Bar service could be better, but there was an event on, which may have explained the slight delays. Look forward to trying this place in the summer to really appreciate the facilities!

Hotel was very nice and staff very friendly.

Cons: The automatic doors.
The hotel was very pleasant. Lots of different places to eat and drink. Didn't use the swimming pool as it seemed so busy with people using spa, etc. Also the hotel reception and areas for eating and drinking were very drafty so sitting about was uncomfortable. There were two large automatic doors for access to the hotel and as it was very busy most of the time the doors were opened. Obviously the weather was very very cold and windy but I found this a bit uncomfortable. Everything else about the hotel was excellent.

Could be improved but ok

Stayed in the annex to the hotel which is not good as you have to walk outside to get to the bars and restaurants. Not ideal in cold, wet weather. A covered walkway would improve this. Shame this wasn't thought of when they upgraded facilities at the hotel which i believe they have spend a fair bit of money on. The bar near the brasserie is lifeless. A huge TV screen showing the facilities of the hotel over and over. I know what they are, i am in it!!! The free WiFi in this annex is hopeless. It kept disconnecting, poor signal strength and in some instances, didn't connect for ages. Check in was good, check out not quite as good but OK. Food was good but when you have the carvery, to have to ring for a chef to assist. This took a few minutes before anyone arrived. Food was good though as was the waitress. Very attentive Hate the 3 neon American style advertising signs outside near and over the Starbucks coffee shop. Very tacky and not what i would expect from a 'Golf and Country Club'. Get rid of them is my advice Would i use the place again? Possibly but will insist on staying in the main block and will close my eyes to the tacky signage
