Beautiful main building

Posted 09-Sep-2014
Pros: The magnificent facade and grounds.
Cons: Coffee machines were out of order and we had a long wait while our room was prepared.
The main building was magnificent but spoilt by the corporate refreshments outside the meeting rooms. What a shame that there are no bedrooms in the main building. The chalet type room we had was fine, clean warm and welcoming. The outside of these buildings was looking a little tired.

Extraordinary Combination

Posted 08-Sep-2014
Pros: Architecture: exterior and interior. Slow-cooked beef (fantastic) Reliable House wine Restaurant staff (especially maitre'd and the trainee)
Cons: Iterdepartmental communication between reception staff (who are the both key and inital point of contact) Socket near a mirror (use of hairdryer)
Location: Go to the Royal Armoury! A "must see" - and it's free.
Architecture and history buffs in search of the very finest in English period houses will probably adore the Edwin Lutyens building at New Place that forms the core of the hotel complex. The principal restaurant/dining room is exquisite and the exterior and grounds give an authentically "Downtonish" flavour of country house living c.1910. Having said that, the bedrooms themselves are located in newly built motel-style blocks and offered a tolerable standard of comfort in relation to the rate I paid. What lets the hotel down, however, is the all-too-evident lack of communication between reception staff and staff at both the leisure suite and restaurant. Not too worrying if bookings for use of pool and sauna made at check-in are not passed on to leisure suite staff, even when this results in security check by walkie-talkie before gaining admittance when use of the same is included in the cost of the room. Disastrous, however, when reservations made at reception are not passed on to resaturant staff. This was meant to be our wedding anniversary celebration and I was perfectly happy to pay "top whack" for a good dinner and wine only to discover that no reservation had been passed on. Only the consummate professionalism, presence of mind and the soothing manner of the maitre'd rescued an awkward situation: he was marvellous! Another staff member who deserves especial mention is the trainee waitress who should immediately be promoted: excellent service.

Lovely hotel, beautiful location among trees!

Posted 06-Sep-2014
Pros: I loved the location, among the trees. Staff were polite and efficient.
Cons: The wardrobe was a bit smelly.
Location: I was attending an Art Exhibition nearby at Rookesbury Park Manor. There was a lovely wine bar and chip shop in the squre in Wickham.
I had a 3 night stay which was really enjoyable! I didn't use any of the hotel facilities as I literally only needed somewhere to sleep! I would definitely use this hotel again if I was in the area.

nice place not 5 star but adequate

Posted 10-Aug-2014
Location: the little town of Wickham was lovely, great pub lovely little shops very quaint.
we were looking for a hotel to stay after dropping our son at Portsmouth and this was the only on left on the Saturday! De Vere has a good name but after reading some of the reviews we were a little worried, however upon arrival we we impressed with the look of the main hall. There was a wedding party boooking in and we also wondered if that might effect the level of service provided. There is nowhere clsoe to go to eat so we booked a table in the restaurant. Had a drink in the bar first (no cocktails avaialable!) The tabel and service was good. Food was very good and great value. We both enjoyed our meal would recommend eatign here again. Room was on the small side, shower only. Fan to keep heat down (problem mentioned by others who have stayed here) There was a little of a "motel" feel about the accomodation but saying that we would stay here again.

Good Hotel in lovely country surroundings

Posted 04-Aug-2014
Pros: Location, facilities and relaxed atmosphere.
Cons: Check-In was a little slow followed by the key not working, so back & forward to reception.
Location: didn't get the chance, but beaches at Bournemouth an hour away, New forest 45 minutes & Portsmouth & Southampton close by. Close to good walks
Good facilities, such as Leisure centre, sauna, Swimming pool, all of which I didn't get the opportunity to use as I was only staying 1 night! Good choice of types of breakfast, slight mix up as I got tea when I ordered coffee and I couldn't originally get into the building where my room was as the key didn't work! overall a good experience & I would certainly go back for a longer stay.

Pros: The hotel was in nice grounds.
Cons: Have one or two bedrooms in the main house. Would be a lot nice to be able to stay in there a night. Air con in the room.
Was ok. Room was to hot. Some staff didn't speak English well

Lovely place if u stay in the main house. We stayed in the outer houses not as good. Bar and food very over priced. But lovely little pub down the road.

Poor standard for the price.

Posted 03-Jul-2014
The hotel was average with blocks of rooms in the grounds of the manor house. The gym and health club were tired. Restaurant host also began serving eggs at the breakfast counter with long hair dangling close to the food. For 120 pounds, the overall standard was poor. Wouldn't use the hotel again. It felt like centre parks!!!

Excellent stay

We were very surprised that this hotel is advertised as 3 star. It should be 4 star. The location and grounds are beautiful.
