“Swiss efficiency”

Stayed here for 4 nights end of August/beginning September 2010 and found it to be a very efficient and pleasant hotel. Full of character, being located in an old water tower, and the Sternschanze park that surrounds is good for jogging/strolling around. S bahn line takes you to centre easily and good location to get back to the airport too (don't bother going all way down and around on S1 line just change a couple of times on other lines, much quicker). Hotel staff couldn't help enough when told them wanted to pop to Berlin for the day (although ended up being too expensive on ICE train and bus a little too long for a day trip) and were generally very approachable. Gym was small yet efficient and hardly anyone there when we used it....and sauna was completely empty with a nice relaxing curtained-off area for lounging in robes. Nice free apples at reception too which had to grab each time walked past! Hotel also in decent condition, only having been open since 2007, which always a plus. Pack an umbrella though as Hamburg weather is crazier than English weather which I never expected (one minute torrential rain, overcast and chilly; next sunny, warm and sticky...several times during the day but August is the wettest month)

Area recommendations

Around the Rathaus and Binnnenalster (nice for strolling around small lake and the Rathausmarkt, a market around the Rathaus i.e. townhall often has snacks to eat for sale) Reeperbahn 'the sinful mile' just for the experience (although probably looked better in 70s when was at its heyday)...fairly tired but at least the Mah Wah Chinese restaurant there was good. Wouldn't bother with the Harry's Bazaar 'shop' near the Reeperbahn as think we were shaken down for 4 euro entry each...and the 'curiosities' contained within the '20 rooms' were not that exciting and had seem many of the stuff inside before...just load of African carving tat with a few interesting things on top of that....would save your money to be honest Moenckebergestrasse area for all the shops and department stores etc......found this area the best There are lots of higher end shops in Neuer Wall street and surrounding the Binnenalster in the arcades and Rathaus, but unless you have a large budget then probably only window shopping as all haute couture

“Great for the conference location - shabby surroundings”

The hotel itself is quite nice but it´s amazing that they haven´t cleaned up around it. Cigarette butts and broken glass all around.

Area recommendations

The neigborhood immediately to the east of the hotel is fantastic. Very artsy and alternative.

“Bad odor spoils a great hotel”

The Movenpick is a stylish modern hotel inside of an unusual historic building located in the center of park. It is an easy walk to the convention center, university, shops and cafes. I had a room on the top floor with a lovely view. The window to the room was open wide when I checked in. Unfortunately, after shutting the window, the room began to smell like sewer gases. When air vents for drains are blocked, sewer gases cannot escape through the vents so the gases come back up through the drains(my husband is plumber). I identified the problem as the drain in the shower and placed a towel over the drain to cap the odor. It was late, my trip was only 2 nights and I didn't have the time for a room change. I left the window open and the towel over the drain. I told the hotel about the odor when I checked out, but I don't know if they understood. I would stay there again conditional that the room was odor free.

“Architektonisch anspruchsvolles Szenehotel im Schanzenviertel”

Das Hotel, ein ehemaliger Wasserturm, liegt direkt am Schazenpark und das Schanzenviertel ist zu Fuß zu erreichen. Architektonisch gelungen, freundlicher Sevice, etwas kleine Zimmer, preislich okay.

“Super Lage, direkt an der U/S-Bahn”

Schönes Hotel, super umgebaut, freundliches Personal, lieber kein 3-Bett-Zimmer für drei Erwachsene nehmen, zu klein und fehlende Accessoires. Sonst super, wir würden immer wieder dieses Hotel buchen

Area recommendations

mit der U-oder S-Bahn ist man in wenigen Minuten bei allen Sehenswürdigkeiten, eine Station zur Flora, wo Tarzan aufgeführt wird, sehr empfehlenswert. Stadtmitte und Hafen sind auch schnell zu erreichen.

Getting around

U oder S-Bahn. Damit kommt man überall hin. Vieles kann man auch zu Fuß erledigen, es ist alles nicht so weit weg wie man denkt.

Dining

Alt Helgoländer Fischrestaurant am Fischmarkt. Super Essen, Preis-Leistungsverhältnis stimmt.

Events and shows

Wir waren schon im König der Löwen und Tarzan. Beide Musicals sind sehr schön und empfehlenswert.

“Super Hotel und klasse Cocktails”

Das Hotel ist super schön und gleich an der Sternschanze. Der Service war sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Das Zimmer war echt hamma und das Fenster zwischen Schlafzimmer und Bad ein Blickfang. Das Essen im Restaurant war sehr gut. Auch das Preisleistungsverhältnis im Restaurant und in der Bar war sehr gut. Zudem muss ich sagen, dass man in der Bar die besten Cocktails bekommt.

Must see

Man sollte sich umbedingt den Hafen und das Binnenalster anschauen. Zudem sollte man auch eine Hafenrundfahrt machen. Die Rundfahrt war sehr lustig und informativ.
