“Safer than it Looks”
Just dont be surprised by the seedy area. The hotel is actually ok, quiet, clean and you get about what you pay for, its a deal, pretty much as described in the reviews I read. Conveniently close to the subway. I would book it again, but my partner would not, due to the neighborhood we had to walk thru. And ...the stairs.
“A&O Revisited”
As a keen supporter of football in general and Manchester City in particular, I have travelled to Hamburg on half a dozen occasions and stayed in a number of hotels of variable quality. I stayed at the A&O Hotel during the 2006 World Cup, when it was known as Hotel Stern. The phrase, "Ger what you pay for" was one that immediately sprung to mind. In other words it was cheap, but didn't have much to offer in the world of sophistication and cleanliness. In 2009 I booked the A&O Hotel not realising that it was the same hotel. The transformation was enormous. The staff were friendly and, despite the feel of a hostel, our room in paricular wouldn't have been out of place in a three star hotel. I would certainly recommend this location for groups of people or single travellers.
“Great location”
Good location and great price. Easy trip from the airport on the subway. Room was quiet because it sits back away from the main street. Friendly front desk staff speak many languages including English. Arrive in the afternoon for room check in.
“Excellent hotel for lads weekend”
Booked single room for stag do, for the price paid it was excellent.en suite shower and good view of reeperbahn. friends had booked twin rooms but had to share toilets and showers. think i got the best deal! overall a good hotel in the middle of the nightlife and very reasonable rates. highly recommend
“Very good for price and Location”
Only one complaint, which was the Showers had to hold in one hand instead of standing below to cure my hangover. Other than that excellent just right for visiting the night life of Hamburg.
“Decent budget option if you're in Hamburg”
We stayed at the Stern when visiting Hamburg for football. The hostel itself was very clean, surprisingly quiet, comfortable, and good value for money. The hostel is set just back off the Reeperbahn, which might not be to everyone's taste, but the St Pauli area seemed safe enough to us, and it's easy to get anywhere within Hamburg within reasonable time as the S-Bahn station is only a few metres from the hostel.
“A&O Hamburg Reeperbahn”

Saint Pauli, Hamburg, Germany: Hamburg's infamous red-light district, St Pauli is sliced down the middle by the notorious Reeperbahn, and has the city's best music venues and theatres. Prostitutes stand in shop windows on the men-only Herbertstrasse and the bars never close. Locals escape the scene by hitting the cafés in the Schanzenviertel, one kilometre away, while ferries and sightseeing tours leave from the docks of Landungsbrücken.
