Almost everyone was lovely in this hotel. The room was immaculate. The onsen was immaculate. The free drinks in the evening were fun. There were a few minor disappointments:
- one side of the hotel was closed; I think it might have had the public room with the view; I felt the hotel was a bit claustrophobic because of this.
- checking out we had hoped to get the Hyatt bus to the station but this bus wasn't available until 11am; to my mind that's a bit late as plenty of people have onward travel plans (ours included catching a train at 8:39am).
- with regard to the free drinks - this was nice but dangerous; some lovely waiter kept refilling my glass the first night and I wasn't paying sufficient attention; I think it would definitely be safer and probably be cheaper for the hotel to supplement the alcohol with a bit of free food/ nibbles. The second night we cottoned on and ordered some (paid for) nibbles but even then it wasn't all that much.
- an elderly Japanese staff member got cranky at me for wearing my slippers in the wrong part of the onsen; this was the part between the door and the shelving for the shoes; there is no sign and there was no collection of abandoned shoes at the door and I honestly can't see how I was supposed to know to take my shoes of at that particular point. Possibly this is obvious to Japanese people but as a guest in Japan this was the one and only moment in which I felt a local person was angry at me for a cultural failing.
