“Fantastic Experience”

Great hotel. Surprisingly awesome location. Very friendly staff. The village of Harleem was every bit as impressive as Amsterdam. 2 train rides from the airport and a quick bus ride and we were there.

“Staying in Haarlem”

On a recent visit to Haarlem with my granddaughter I found the Amrath Grand Hotel Frans Hals a very convenient, comfortable, Judiththough slightly impersonal place to stay. It is just off the main square, behind the Cathedral and handy for restaurants, shops, canal trips etc. The train and bus stations are about 10 minutes' walk away. Events are often held in the square (Centenary of Fokker aircraft whilst we were there) but we were not aware of any noise in the hotel. If you need something nearer the station I can recommend the Golden Tulip Hotel, which is a small and friendly hotel just across the road from the buses and trains. Be aware, though, that road works in the station square are still ongoing from when I was there two years ago!

“Best Hotel yet”

It was our good fortune to choose Haarlem and the Amrath Hotel rather than stay in Amsterdam which on our one visit was busy and noisy. The circular staircase and beautiful stained glass ceiling was spectacular. As with other reviewers the breakfasts in the Hotel were expensive but there were lots of eating places around Haarlem to choose from. We were delighted with our stay and plan to return.

Area recommendations

Haarlem is a large interesting city with lots to see. Be sure to visit Saint Bavo Church,Teylers Museum, the oldest in Holland.as well as the Frans Hals Museum. In summer boats and yachts large and small travel the Spaarne, and it is possible to go on a canal boat around Haarlem, a great way to get to learn about the city, then you can go back and visit the attractions at your leisure.

Getting around

It was not until the end of our trip that we found out it is cheaper to travel around by bus the train. There is a great bus service from Haarlem with lots of destinations and we got a 'Buzzer' bus ticket we could use all day on and off buses, at a fraction of the cost of train travel

“Happy in Haarlem”

Good service and clean hotel. Appreciated the water coolers in the hallway and the coffee/tea in the room. Our TV didn't work and there was no clock in the room, but it was no big deal. I am sure they would have addressed both concerns had I mentioned them. Provided a complementary beer the first night. Nice.

“Best hotel outside amsterdam”

We booked this hotel as we wanted to stay in a decent 4 star hotel but the ones in amsterdam were too expensive.We discovered the Amrath Fran Hals hotel in Haarlem and it was fantastic! Only 15 mins train ride to the capital and Haarlem is worth looking at with the shops, restaurant and museums.The hotel staff was friendly, happy to help and rooms was modern and clean. The downpoint is because its in the centre of town, you can hear the late night party goers making a noise in the corridor or outside the window. I would avoid the breakfast as its 20 euros and theres a few nice cafes to eat around the city. An undiscovered gem!

Getting there

Avoid getting the taxi from the airport as its 50 euros and get the no.300 bus which is 4 only euros.It takes you to the city centre and its only a 5 min walk to the hotel

“Great for a short break”

We booked this hotel by accident, Expedia's website leading us to think it was in central Amsterdam. It was a happy accident! A short train ride to and from Amsterdam meant we could enjoy the tourist attractions of the frenetic and crowded capital, but retire to the comfort, peace and gentler beauty of Haarlem. I would recommend that others do that. The hotel was modern, comfortable, spacious and friendly - excellent value overall. (Apart from the breakfast, which wasn't included in the price, and at 20 Euros was poor value. Luckily, the hotel across the road offers similar at 11.5 Euros - go there!)

“Good value for the price”

This was a great option for my husband and I when we went to Amsterdam. We were initially disappointed because we misunderstood, but in the end we very happy that it was in Haarlem instead of Amsterdam. It was only about a 10 minute train ride and it was kind of nice to get away from the craziness in order to be able to sleep.

“Armrath Not So Grand”

This hotel could a a lot better. My room was comfortable but basic with no trimmings. No tea/coffee making, no complimentary water. Breakfast was basic and lacking any flair or imagination. The elevator, a single small version serving 6 floors was very slow when it worked. The place is clean and tidy but 'sterile'. The views across the water were nice. The staff mostly pleasant. It just lacked anything special.
