“Charming”

The Pan American is a nice breathe of historic air one block from the historic plaza. The streets may be lined by vendors of all sorts and families walking about the plaza during holidays and weekends...a must see for that part of town. Plenty of shopping and bars for the traveler that hits the sack around 10pm or earlier. The Pan American, formerly an Astoria is well kept, clean, slight museum feel, has excellent food and friendly staff. There may be too much excitement for the 'not so much explorer type'. Be prepared for poverty, sleeping on streets, begging and occasional shooting in that part of town. But, I've seen that in every town of that size and have plans to go back. A safer area is downtown, south off reforma, but you'll miss the real feel of Guatemala City.

“A basic grade hotel close to historical area”

Generally a comfortable stay. The hotel's facilities are very limited indeed. e.g. no air con, no mini fridge, no tea/coffee making facilities. The wifi does not cover the 2nd floor. So take your laptop to the ground floor or the veranda of he 1st floor in order to get on line. On the plus side, there is daily linen change or room making service if you prefer. Also there are 2 free half litre of bottled water is provided. The staff are generally helpful but one or two have poor command of the spoken English which might make them to appear to be blunt. On the whole they are acceptable. They could order taxi for you around Q80-90 to the airport, so, an important service. I was told travellers should not use public transport if from unknown source. The hotel is very near the presidential palace and main cathedral and central market so there are places to see by walking. Street stalls and shops and restaurants are very close by.

“Location, location”

Although we have been to Guatemala City several times on our way to or on our way back from some other Guatemalan city, this was the first time we have stayed at this particular hotel. We chose this hotel, this location, because it is within easy walking distance to the Central Park and all the activities that were to take place there during their Independance Day celebrations on September 14 and 15. The hotel, while not in the safest area of the city, is close to many of the historical buildings worth visiting on any visit to this city. The staff was consistently friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean but it is old and, although it wears its years quite well, it shows its age. The room we were given was quite small, no view to speak of, and somewhat austere. However, the price was great, the bed was clean, hot water was plentiful, and the proximity to history was ideal. We would go back.
