Swim beneath the cascades of a series of waterfalls that plunge into a pristine basin after you take a scenic drive that follows the Langevin River.

Grand Galet Falls is a waterfall on the southern section of the island of Réunion. Also known as Langevin Falls after the river at its source, the waterfall is a beautiful spot for a daytrip. Drive along a steep and winding road and you’ll be rewarded with an oasis of pristine pools and cascades. Go for a swim and let the water tumble onto your head or sit on a rock and enjoy the majestic surroundings.

The sight of Grand Galet Falls is sure to take your breath away. You’ll see a number of large waterfalls frilled by smaller cascades all pouring into the same deep pool. The water appears to leap out of the mountainside and splash across the moss-covered rocks. Claim your spot on the rocky foreshore and spend some time admiring the mesmerizing falls. Cool off with a swim in the pristine mountain waters. If you are a confident swimmer, make your way over to one of the smaller cascades and feel the water falling on your skin. Return to the shore and spread out a picnic to enjoy on the rocks.

The journey to Grand Galet Falls may be just as exciting as the destination. Follow the road as it winds and weaves its way up the mountainside, keeping in line with the Langevin River. Pass over narrow bridges and peer down into the burbling water below. There are several opportunities to park by the roadside and take a break from driving with a refreshing swim.

Gaze out at the view from the window and see fields of banana plantations and lychee and avocado trees, as well as small villages. Stop at the small Trou Noir waterfall, which is also a great swimming spot. Don’t linger for long, though. This waterfall is just an entrée when compared to the mighty Grand Galet Falls.

Grand Galet Falls are located near the commune of Saint-Joseph to the south of Réunion. It is a steeply inclined 8-mile (13-kilometre) drive from the commune. The road is narrow and has plenty of hairpin bends, as well as a few single-lane bridges. There is a village a short distance beyond the falls where you can turn around for your return.
