My daughter and I decided to have the trip of a lifetime to New York following my retirement. We stayed at the Refinery Hotel for 4 nights and we were extremely glad that we had chosen this wonderful hotel. It's location was ideal, located between 5th and 6th Avenue within comfortable walking distance to Times Square, Rockerfeller Centre, Macy's and a lot of other wonderful shops along Fifth Avenue.
We did use a lot of taxis as walking for longer periods was an issue for me, this does take quite a lot of money but well worth it in our circumstances. We visited all the well known New York landmarks and found that an early start helped a lot with the queus and the amount of people - we were at the Empire State Building as they opened at 08.00 a.m. Similarily Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island and Top of the Rock.
We had wonderful meals in a lot of special restaurants but the two that stood out were Gallagher's steak house in the Broadway area and The Boathouse in Central Park where we were fortunate in experiencing exceptionally warm weather and we enjoyec lunch overlooking the lake.
A wonderful night at the theatr watching Jersey Boys was also a highlight which we'll never forget.
Back to the wonderful Refinery Hotel, we were so glad that we had chosen a boutique hotel and not one of the much larger establishments that New York is well known for. The staff couldn't do enough for you and service was world class - actually made our holiday.

From the moment I arrived, the staff were great and most helpful. My room was well appointed and clean with the best view of the Empire State Building. Though small (normal for NYC Hotels unless you fork out the bucks for larger living spaces), the Queen sized bed was most comfortable and bathroom was large... For me, the two most important attributes. The staff was eager to please and I must say, succeeded.
Our stay in New York was everything we had imagined and we can say that it did indeed live up to our expectations. The city is very alive and exciting. The sights and sounds will be remembered for a lifetime and we made sure that we saw and experienced as much as was physically possible during our week's stay. One must always have a plan beforehand with options and recommendations gleaned from guide books, and friends or family who have visited the city, particularly in recent times. Be prepared to make changes to scheduled plans and always have an alternative in place should the need arise. We made a good fist of ticking off our most important options on the master list of must do's and maybe do's. A very friendly city with good transport - the subway and trains were a pleasant surprise with no graffiti in sight. We will remember the poor state of many of the roads but in many instances this is due to either the numerous developments being erected or refurbished, or to the extremes of winter and summer weather that plays havoc with roading. We will remember the masses of eateries, large and small, the freshness of the food and extensive choices offered any time of the day and night.
We had amazing views from the Rockefeller Centre in daytime and the Empire State at night. Central Park is huge and you need a good pair of shoes as we walked miles in the city during our stay.
Very clean room, friendly staff. A couple of blocks from Times Square. Great view of midtown from my room on the upper levels. Quiet at night but a lot of noise and construction during the morning from building site next door. Hotel is on a seedy, grimy street across from Port Authority. But didn't feel
Unsafe at night walking back to the hotel. Along 9th avenue, some great places to eat. A convenient location.
