“Excellent Location, Great Hotel”

This hotel is located in the heart of downtown Dubuque. It's close to many restaurants and bars and a good location if you are looking for some night life. It is also close to Diamond Jo's casino, not really walkable but a very short car ride. The hotel rooms themselves were a big surprise. They are so nice way better than I could have expected. The only thing that needs a little work or attention is the elevators. They are the only thing that are showing age at the hotel. This hotel is a little pricey but worth it if you like to splurge a little.

“Great surprise”

On a road trip moving from SF to Chicago, we'd planned to spend our last night in Madison, only all the hotels were sold out. We decided to head to Dubuque and after a quick search tripped over the Julien as the only appealing option. What a great surprise. Great space, evidently after a very lengthy and costly renovation. Great location, great views. Problem with checking in as they hadn't received our Expedia confirmation (Expedia systems were down the night before) but they assured us we were fine, they called Expedia and got us checked in. We were given a great room and continued great service. Quality of materials in the rooms, especially the bedding was wonderful. If you're headed to Dubuque or the area, this is THE place to stay.

“Very Nice Hotel”

This is a very nice hotel with a lot of character. The decor is very nice and the rooms are well appointed. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are a good size. The hotel is conveniently located with great restaurants located nearby and a very nice wine/chocolates/gelato/coffee shop across the street. The only drawback is that the hotel is close to the train tracks and the trains go by early in the morning (i.e. 5:00 AM).

“quality reno”

“Dubuque's Best”

We only stayed one night but wished we could stay longer. Hotel has great ambiance. The room was a little small but I loved the decor. We did not check out the pool so I can't comment on that. Great location. Within walking distance to everything. Would definitely go back if in the area.

“Room needed to be clearner. Caroline's restaurant was the BEST!”

The carpet needed to be vacuumed better especially by the bed and the bathroom shower could have been cleaner. The doors squeaked as well which we reported to the hotel staff. The hotel itself is beautifully restored. Caroline's restaurant had wonderful staff and even better food. Everything we ate there was fantastic. I would definitely recommend the pancakes for breakfast and their steaks and sauces were fantastic. Would go back again if the opportunity presented itself.

“Perfect!”

We loved everything about Hotel Julien... The hotel is gorgeous! Our room was beautiful and comfortable. The staff was friendly. The restaurant was nice. The shoppes and restaurants in the area were great! We have a 4 yr old, so we debated staying at the nearby waterpark hotel, but decided we preferred a nicer hotel over a waterpark.

Area recommendations

Since it was July, we were able to use the Dubuque public outdoor pool at Flora Park for a few bucks and it had waterslides, a big zero depth pool and a kiddie pool. We recommend Vinny Vanucchi's restaurant (one block away)and Crust restaurant (across the street). Also, the gelatto place across the street was excellent and Nasty Dog coffee shop a few blocks away was great too.Highly recommend taking the ?Felton? Street Elevator a few blocks away - spectacular views of the city from there! We will ALWAYS stay at the Hotel Julien when travelling to Dubuque from now on.

“A Gem”

I didn't make much use of any hotel services, just needed a place to sleep. The building was awesome, surrounded by plenty of cool downtown bars within easy walking distance. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was exceptionally nice. No complaints, I'd definitely stay here again, especially given that it was very reasonably priced.
