First time in Madeira. Booked basic room but had free upgrade to suite with kitchen. Good service from staff. Ideal location- out of town but not too far. Shops, bars and restaurants close by. Hotel used by mostly older people, but would definitely recommend. Good pools and restful surroundings.
I stayed 48 hours after a week of strenuous walking (55 year old woman travelling solo) and had the best time. Sparkling 20m pool and easy access to a lovely pebbly beach (take jelly shoes). With friendly staff, excellent food, a nice room with a balcony overlooking the sea, and a superb hot stone massage what's not to like. Only 20 mins and €25 by taxi from the airport and frequent buses into Funchal. Thoroughly recommended.

The Pestana Grand is an excellent hotel of true 5 star quality set in beautiful surroundings of luxury. The swimming pool was so inviting and wrapped itself around half of the hotel, overlooking he sea front and set amongst the most beautiful tropical garden. Every morning you would wake up to silence and darkness (around 7am) with an emerging sunrise ready to light up the hotel. At breakfast time you were greeted by staff who would allocate a table for you allowing you to enjoy breakfast. There was no rush and plenty of room with ample choice of food taste for breakfast. The rest of the day was enjoyed indulging yourself in the hotel facilities and soaking up the sunshine around the pool. A poolside bar was easily accessed with some shade to enjoy to take a break from the sunshine. The hotel rooms are spacious and immaculate with a generous sized bathroom in good decorative taste and a decent wardrobe with plenty of shelving and hanging space. It was a real pleasure to return to the hotel after a day of touring the island to return to such luxury. I would definitely return to the Pestana Grand and thoroughly recommend it to everyone.
Funchal is famous for their holiday fireworks display and this hotel has a rooftop view that is thrilling. Their kitchenette room was well stocked to allow the traveler to make their own food if they would like to save a few dollars by eating in. The town does have good restaurants however. We would absolutely recommend this hotel to others visiting Madeira.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Vila Marta. The apartment was scrupulously clean and well serviced every day. It really suited us to have our own kitchenette facilities (2 ring hob, microwave, toaster, kettle, crockery,pans and cutlery), living area and balcony and the whole apartment was tastefully furnished with comfortable beds and a great shower. Bruno and Joel were extremely helpful providing information when needed, booking taxis etc, without being intrusive in any way. They have an arrangement with a lovely local restaurant whereby a member of restaurant staff will pick you up and bring you back - we were also offered an aperitif with Joel before we left. Fresh rolls are hung outside your door at about 7.00am every morning and we were given a parting gift of Madeira wine and cake. Although Vila Marta is not in the centre of Funchal it is easy to catch the 45 bus from a nearby stop and Bruno provides a timetable for this - he even gave us a lift into the centre on one day. We stayed for two weeks beginning on the 5th September, 2014 and our expectations, based upon reviews from this and other review sites, were pleasingly surpassed. Our first member of staff, on reception, was to be our introduction to the first class service we received throughout our stay. Our evening meal, which was very good, was accompanied by absolutely excellent service. All of the staff were attentive, friendly and efficient. Together with the food and the magnificent view from our table on the rooftop terrace our evening proved to be a momentous occasion.
The hotel is approximately one and a half miles from the centre of Funchal and the majority of the bars and restaurants. However, the hotel did provide taxis both in the morning, afternoon and early evening so, the option to visit Funchal central, is catered for. In the event that all the taxis become fully booked, a regular bus service operates, with a stop within 100 yards of the hotel, throughout the day. If individual tickets are purchased on the bus, the cost is 1.95 Euros each way. I found this hotel to be in an excellent location in that it was near enough to town but sufficiently away from the busy centre to provide us with peace and quiet.
We chose to stay on a bed and breakfast basis because we like the independence of the time of eating together with choice of food but the hotel food we sampled was of good quality and well cooked.
Our superior room was located on the third floor and had a good sea view.
