“Loved the location”

The view was great and we were near all the dive boats. Place has everything you need but no frills.

“Surprisingly good”

Found this on internet when we just were looking for a place to stop one night on our way back from Key West. Better in "real life" than what I saw on the net. Big nice pool, nice room and restaurant close by.

“Worst hotel experience of my trip”

My husband and I did a road trip of Southern Florida. Our second night was in Key Largo at the Marina Del Mar "Resort" (what a misnomer; aren't there standards by which a place can call themselves a resort?). The place is shabby. The rooms small and shabby. The beds old and uncomfortable. I woke the next morning with bites all over my body, and the itching drove me crazy for the remainder of the trip. The lobby was closed until 7 a.m. and the night clerk would not let me come in to discuss the problem with the bites. The clerk the night before was not as bad but certainly unimpressive. We were on a timeline and had to leave before it opened, thus I cannot comment on the quality of the breakfast offered by the "resort." The pool area and jacuzzi were nice, as was a nice covered patio along a waterway where boats were moored. Also, had we been interested, a bar/restaurant was along the waterway very close by (could enjoy the music while we were in the pool). Do NOT stay here.

“Comfortably convenient; park car and forget about it unti time to go home”

Traveling with a group of ten scuba divers, seven lodged at Marina del Mar (three rooms). The others stayed with family. Clean, safe, quiet with a gorgeous view of the canal. The front desk personnel at check-in was fabulous, always ready to assist with a smile. All the resort personnel were friendly. We dove with Ocean Divers, located next door to the resort property, dined at The Galley and Coconuts, both right next door, walking distance. We enjoyed music on the balcony drifting from Coconuts but did not hear it in our rooms. The pool and hot tub were clean and inviting. There was a storm during our stay and we had a commanding yet safe view of the activity from our balcony.

Area recommendations
All of Key Largo is quaint but there is fine dining, casual dining, fast food. Live bands and one-man-bands abound. A dive museum is located just south of KL. I recommend diving/snorkeling with Ocean Divers or taking a Glass Bottom Boat to enjoy the majesty of the coral reefs and its inhabitants.
Outdoors or beach
Not much of a beach spot. But the diving, fishing and general boating on the ocean and in the bay is world class.

“Not as good as it was”

My boyfriend and I have been staying at the Marina del Mar for the past 3 years - MOSTLY because it is dog friendly and that is hard to find in the keys. While the hotel rooms smell clean - overwhelmingly when you first get there - our stay this last time was very disappointing. The sheets had major burn marks on them making them look very dirty. The pillows have been washed too many times making them lumpy and uncomfortable and the beds have become saggy and hard. The sink had a crack in it and the ceiling was COVERED in dust. The shower had some weird bottom no stick pad that was leaving weird papery stuff in it. Parking has always been a pain at this hotel as well, so dont bring more than one car. We have stayed here maybe 9 times in the past 3 years and this was the worst visit.. This was my favorite hotel but I think its been used too much - for the price I just dont feel it is worth it anymore. I dont think I will be staying there again. They have never emailed me with deals or anything even though I ALWAYS fill out the card for future info. I will say location wise its good because divers direct is really close and the breakfast place called Denny's Latin Cafe (not a chain) has a great cheap breakfast that will last you all day, especially if you plan on being physical all day.

Area recommendations
The keys are what they are.....stick to the waters....the rest is tourist junk
Getting around
I swear that the Keys have the worst drivers in the WORLD. Besides the fact that cops are out in MASS, they are happy to give out tickets like free candy to speeders. The roads are mostly one lane each way - I SWEAR this is why people forget how to drive. Also you are going to have to make U-turns here - and its ok - you dont need to freak out about it. Just try to RELAX while driving there, especially leaving there. If you are just taking your time edging along on the Sunday exodus it will go alot faster than ramming your car right into the one in front of you and then stopping short and messing up traffic for everyone behind you. I know it seems so hard to do...just drive the speed limit.
What to pack
Snorkel Gear, Dive Gear, Bathing Suits, Sunscreen, Hats, Shorts, T-shirts. My best bit of advice is to wear more than your bikini = this is the KEYS - you are SUPER close to the equator - the sun will bake and fry you all day if you don't cover-up, and if you want more than ONE day in the sun buy a rash guard and some girlie swim trunks and reapply sunscreen every few hours. Make sure you cover your tips of your ears, the back of your knees and the tops of your feet. Wear a hat or you will burn your scalp.
Dining
This was my first time going to MA's restaurant - its somewhere on Islamorada and it is DELISH! Also they will cook your catch. The Fish House on Key Largo is a STAPLE. Eat there. It is busy because it is GOOD. I will say I had one bad time there but hasnt happened again. They will also cook your catch.

“Nice hotel for the price”

The hotel iteself was nice. Parking was very limited and you had to park over by Coconuts which wasn't that far of a walk. Only thing we had a problem with our room was the plumbing in the bathroom sink probably due to a clog. I wouldn't mind staying at this place again.

“nice pool!”

The hotel itself was okay. The staff was not friendly and did not volunteer any information, there were no washcloths or hand towels in our room, there was no water pressure and the jets in the jacuzzi tub did not work. The pool, however, was really nice! It was an alright place to stay on our way back from vacation.

“Can't wait to go back”

My husband and I went down to Key Largo for the July 4th weekend. We brought our Siberian Husky, so I decided to rent a studio suite. We were on the 4th floor with a large balcony (not private) overlooking the Marina. The room had a full kitchen - very nice. The Coconuts restaurant next door allows dogs and even brought Lucy ice water and dog treats! The John Penkamp coral reef is a must see! (but don't forget the Dramamine!). We will definately go back!

What to pack
If you are going snorkeling, be sure and take some Dramamine the day before so you don't get sea sick.
Must see
John Penkamp Coral Reef
Dining
If you get the early bird special at Coconuts restaurant, you will save about $10 each on dinner. Or you could get it to go, put it in your fridge and reheat later in your room. The studio suites have a full kitchen with table and chairs.
