Beautiful hotel - Food could do with improvement

Posted 02-Jul-2015
Pros: We love everything about it apart from the food! There's so much to do if you want to do so - or lovely sun beds for relaxing around the pools
Cons: The food choices and standards need improving, especially for people with dietary requirements.
Location: About an hours drive from Key West, lots to do within the resort and also around the marina -
We have stayed in this hotel for 4 years running now and we love it. We have always visited over the Easter break and whilst there was a scramble for sunbeds the first year, we have had no problems in subsequent years. The indies club is brilliant for the kids, especially my sports mad 9 year old - there's always kids on the football or basket ball courts to play with. My 8 year old daughter has no trouble making friends in the pool or the park. There is also a crazy golf area which is popular. The resort is really pretty and well maintained. Even the standard rooms are a really good size although the family room offers even more room which helps stops the claustrophobic feeling of a family staying in 1 room for a long time! The only downside to this hotel is the food. The Indies club offers good snacks/fries/pizza/burger but you get sick of those after a few days. The Ocean restaurant buffet was expensive and not good at all. The Beach Grill is ok - again, not a lot of choice and struggled to get our order of plain chicken breast (no seasoning) and fries for our coeliac son right and had to be returned twice. For being a luxury large hotel, in America, the choice of food and information available for anyone with dietary requirements is woeful and desperately needs improving. If my son was a very sensitive coeliac, he would not have been able to eat anything. Allergies etc are not an unusual thing these days & hotels really need to improve on this point.

Great location for family vacation

Posted 02-Jul-2015
Just returned from a one week stay with my family. Duck Key was a beautiful spot and hotel was conveniently located next to marina that offered multiple activities for all ages. I'm generally not one to provide feedback, but given the price for this location, I think there are some areas that Management team could address. Hotel common area amenities and grounds were nice. We stayed in the main resort. There were several pools, a salt water lagoon that offered kayaks and paddle boards for rental, spa. If selecting the island view room, be prepared to have view of roof top and A/C units. Definitely not appealing and I expected more for $300+ a night. Rooms could use updating. Beds were rickety and carpeting was stained. Room cleaning service was not reliable. We left our room by 10:30 AM each day and were often not serviced until 5 pm if at all. I had to reach out to Guest Service for assistance with fresh towels. Overall, customer service could improve. There were some associates that clearly loved their job and provided stellar service while others visibly did not enjoy theirs and it showed in performance. Poolside service was nearly impossible to nail down. They run by without making eye contact, so unless you are prepared to chase, don't expect them to come to you. Seems like they could staff heavier. Restaurants were good, but SO expensive. Unless you are staying in a villa with refrigerator and microwave, be prepared to spend a small fortune on dining out.

Hidden fees got us!

Awesome place with a lot to do. Beautiful island! The fact that you needed a fishing license to rent rods and a boating safety course to rent a jet ski was disappointing, a lot has changed since I was there last. Overall it was a nice place to stay.

Hidden Charges

Posted 15-Jun-2015
Pros: I liked the grounds, such as swimming pools and lagoon. The dolphins were fun to watch.
Cons: Get rid of the hidden "resort fee." I would like to know the full amount I must pay per night up front.
Location: The seafood restaurants in nearby Marathon were excellent. I preferred eating dinner in town. Key West is only a 75 minute drive from there.
I reserved the room through Expedia to save between $10 to $20 per night. When the final bill came, I was also charged $39/day for "resort fee." It was explained to us that they add that on because we used a third party to make the reservation. The room was nice, but I have been in much nicer rooms at a lesser price. The grounds were gorgeous. Most of the food we had at the various restaurants was excellent, but overpriced. The ability to watch dolphins from the grounds was a bonus.

All feedback from our guests is important and highly valued. Thank you for sharing your appreciation for our resort grounds, our pool and saltwater lagoon. While we are glad that there were multiple aspects of your stay that you enjoyed, we apologize if you were in any way surprised by our fees. The resort fee, which is not specific to how a guest reserves their stay, provides a variety of great amenities including wireless Internet access, transportation throughout the resort, access to our Calm Waters Fitness Center, unlimited use of our putting course, and more. We hope that one day we can welcome you back for a stay that exceeds all your expectations

This is not the Ritz

Posted 15-Jun-2015
Pros: Staff was extremely nice.
Cons: The accommodations need to be renovated.
Location: Anything that you'd like to do off-property requires at least a 20 minute drive. US1 is one lane in either direction so traffic slows you down.
Hawks Cay used to enjoy a reputation as one of the preeminent resorts in the Florida Keys. The property remains nice but it is in decline. Accommodations We stayed at a villa and the quality of the accommodations varies because some of the villas appear to be owned in a time-share type of arrangement. Our villa was clean but the bathrooms were tiny and cramped. The mattresses were worn out and sagged and the pillows had similarly seen better days. The furniture was also old and worn. It was so uncomfortable that on the last night we decided to pack up and leave to drive home and sleep in our own bed. Logistics The property has a sprawling campus and moving around requires long walks or the use of a tram. For example, guests with kids may spend part of the day at the kids' pool, which is nice, but which lacks any amenities for adults. The problem is that the kids' pool is inside the kids club and is far from the regular pool and lagoon. If parents eventually tire of being in the kids area, or if they want to take a dip in a pool, they will need to pack everything up and take a tram to the main building. The pool/lagoon area in the main building is very nice with several restaurants and bars but seating is at a premium. If you arrive in the middle of the day there may not be any lounge chairs available so use of these amenities may prove difficult. Also, the spa is right next to the kids club pool so the noise may be an issue. Overall The property is ok but in decline.

Thank you for your review. All comments, positive or otherwise, are greatly appreciated. While we were happy to read your compliment for our associates as well as our restaurants, it was disheartening to learn that we may have fell short of your expectations. We deeply regret that you did not find the bed in your room to be optimal as we understand the importance of being comfortable to obtain a great nights sleep. Once again we would like to thank you for sharing your feedback. One day we hope to welcome you back for a stay that surpasses your expectations.
