“Wonderful”

The hotel is in a perfect location with great views. The staff was helpful and very nice. I plan on going back to Florence someday and I will defiantly stay there. Nice breakfast and clean.

“Charming and Quaint”

We loved the Hermitage. It's right off the Ponte Vecchio -- a little noisy, but great location! The staff was more helpful than anywhere else we've ever been, especially at the reception desk, where the woman on duty got us reservations at the sights (she insisted on doing this without us asking!) and at restaurants. The bed was a little hard, and we would have liked to have a computer on the premises, but the beautiful public rooms and charm of the antique furnishings made up for those minor inconveniences. We would stay there again and will definitely recommend it to our friends.

Area recommendations
We loved the area where we stayed, near the Ponte Vecchio and the Piazza Signorina. Good restaurants and close to tourist attractions.
What to pack
Bring a computer. We could find only one internet cafe. Most hotels have wi-fi.

“Great Hotel for central Florence”

Having stayed in many hotels in different cities in Italy recently this great hotel shone through. Well run and presented. Clean, large room with good AC. Curtious helpful staff. Good breakfast selection. Roof top terrace was great for an afternoon glass of wine. Central location easy walking distance from station.

“A Nice Little Hotel”

This hotel is located right at the centre of everything. Being next to the Ponte Vecchio, we could easily walk to most attractions. They have a very tiny elevator but their staff was very nice and helpful. I would recommend this hotel to my friends for sure.

Must see
No tourist should miss Piazzale Michelangelo. It is on the south side of Arno River where you can overlook Florence from a high point of view.

“Delightful hotel”

We have stayed in other hotels in Florence but the Hermitage is easily the best: its position yards from the Ponte Vecchio makes it so easy to get to where one wants to go within minutes. Breakfasts on the roof terrace overlooked by the Palazzo della Signoria, or in the attractive dining room, are really charming, as are the furnishings & pictures which are a mixture of the old & new. Very helpful & friendly staff who were always ready with advice on best places to eat & other information. The only drawback is that it only does breakfast, but with so many great places to eat out it doesn't really matter. Our room overlooked a little square with an ancient church & the swifts screaming around all evening & swooping in & out of their nests in the church's facade seemed to echo our own delight.

Area recommendations
Santa Croce for so much wonderful art. The walk to San Miniato del Monte was worth it for the views & more great art (especially the series of frescoes on the life of St Benedict). We also saw a great costume exhibition at the Pitti Palace.

“Excellent hotel in first rate location”

This hotel has a prime location in the city centre literally minutes away from the attractions we wanted to visit. Staff were all very pleasant and efficient. Breakfast buffet was more than adequate. The hotel has a beautiful terrace which overlooks the Ponte Vecchio on one side and the Duomo on the other. One of the best city centre hotels we have stayed at.

Area recommendations
The Galileo Museum is quieter than most of the other museums and galleries. It is well laid out with interesting displays, videos and animations.
What to pack
Comfortable, flat footwear!

“AMAZING location, staff and hotel”

This was a highlight of our trip. The hotel is located right AT the Ponte Vecchio. It is old, clean and the staff is wonderful. If you hadn't been walking miles already throughout Italy, this hotel will get you in shape. The reception desk and continental breakfast are on the 5th floor. You could take the elevator but walking/climing is so Italian. The staff is so pleasant and friendly and helpful. Will DEFINITELY be going back.

Area recommendations
You absolutely MUST climb the stairs in the Duomo. The view is amazing (especially in a thunder storm). The people all over this wonderful city are beautiful. They are so helpful. The entire city is worthy of at least a 3 day visit.
Getting there
We took the Eurostar train from Rome. It was faster than ANY train in the U.S. It was clean and the employees are very friendly. Just make sure you know which stop is yours as they don't announce the Stations when you arrive or tell you when to get ready to get up and off. We asked the gentlemen sitting with us and they were very helpful. Book the train online BEFORE you go. You get an assigned seat which was great as you don't have to get on and be stressed about trying to sit together. The scenery is worth the train ride alone.
Getting around
WALK, WALK, WALK. There is nothing better than wandering and "getting lost" on all of the side streets. The people are so helpful. We found some amazing shops and artisans by wandering. We hired a personal tour guide and she (Elisabetta) was fantastic. She has a PhD and is so knowledgeable. We learned so much from her.
What to pack
LIGHT and LAYERS. Jeans, sneakers/flats and sweaters. You can buy a lightweight leather coat when you arrive as they are gorgeous. Pack some of your ready-to-throw away undergarments, socks, etc. and toss them after you wear them so you have extra room for purchases.
Shopping
Here's a tip I wish someone had told me. When you make a purchase over $150 the Italian governement gives you the tax back. HOWEVER, you have a signed receipt from the merchant, go to the special VAT window at the airport (gate H at Rome Fiumicino airport)--which everyone told us AND ......here's the part we didn't know........you MUST have the items WITH YOU as the agent at the window must see the items. Luckily, we had them in our carryon but others had packed theirs away and were out of luck.
Dining
Our best meal in Florence was at Celestino's just over the Ponte Vecchio. They had an appetizer of grilled Italian bread with homemade olive oil (MADE THAT DAY) drizzled over it. The pasta dishes are incredible. The chef is from Sulmona and the food is incredible. The best thing about Italian restaurants is ordering one course at a time. That way, if you are full after a particular course you can stop. We had local wine every where we went and it was always great. The thing we had the hardest time with was no tipping required. As Americans it is drilled into our heads that we tip as the wait staff don't make much if anything for an hourly wage. In Europe if you are served well, five euros is a terrific tip. If the service is exceptional, ten euros (approx. $13) is HUGE.
Other
Do NOT drive in Florence. Someone gave us this tip and that is why we opted for the train. We DID have to rent a car to drive to our next destination and just trying to pull out of the parking garage onto a narrow, scooter filled side street was an amazing feat. It is so hard to find your way around as every other street is a one-way street and the road signs are all over the place--you know the ones you see in magazines on a pole with 50-60 signs on it. It is a nightmare but also an adventure.

“Very Pleased”

An attractive hotel in a good location. The sitting room overlooking the Ponte Vecchio is especially attractive.

Area recommendations
Basilica San Lorenzo, designed by Brunelleschi, is not one of the best known sights - but visitors to Florence should ensure that they see it.

“Lovely hotel with charm and history”

A centrally located hotel with history and character. The breakfast room and adjoining patio was exquiste. First two nights it was noisy due to construction in the back alley. The management graciously moved us to the sixth floor. Heavenly!
