“A good base for Tuscany.”

This Hotel is on the outskirts of Certaldo next to the area of San Gimignano. This has been a grain mill and is quite new looking, stylish and relaxed with very helpful daytime staff. Breakfast served is a sumptuous delight. Lorena's ,Ham and cheese puff pastry slice was wonderful. Being positioned near a main road and on a river makes for noise outside the Hotel and attracts insects from the river. We found rooms hot as air con was off and heating, which was on, was not needed. Brits used to cold October's we supposed. Information regarding local eateries, train times, bus times and taxi's are given by very helpful staff. The staff gave us options rather than just giving one choice. Local taxi driver they recommedned was very good and helpful.

Area recommendations
Having arrived at Florence airport we were whisked west,to our Hotel via Taxi. Visit Certaldo Alto which is a 10 min walk away and accesible by path or funicular railway.Hotel Castello is nice with good views or town. Certaldo is very well positioned to head south to Siena or west to Pisa and the coast., we enjoyed a trip to Siena, where if you go by train(don't forget to clip your ticket!!) you arrive at a bus station and what appears to be the world's longest escalator which starts in a local supermarket and arrives you just on the outskirts of Siena. Wonderful medieval city. The next day we went to Florence, by train, and enjoyed a quick tour on the hop on hop off, City Tour Bus. We took the guide book advise and went to the Pallazzo Michaelangelo which gives a superb panoramic view of the City. The wonderful buidings are best appreciated from there as the buildings viewed from close to, at street level, are difficult to appreciate in all their splendour without the ariel view we saw. Our final day on a wine tour was organised by the hotel through the local Tourist Information at San Gimignano which is a 15 min taxi ride away. Starting at 11.00am and finishing at 8.30pm we enjoyed two winery visits. The first in San Gimignano was the best and the tour around the countryside was very enjoyable and relaxing taking in a number of local medieval villages and castles in the Chianti and Barello Wine regions. An enjoyable four day break.
When to go
October is getting to out of season but suited us. Mainly sunny with clouds. Only one morning of rain. That was when we went to Florence by train and by the time we got there it was a beautiful day. Certaldo Alto is virtually closed from November for the winter period. .
What to pack
Insect repellant.
Dining
Excellent choice in Certaldo Town and in Certaldo Alto. Had a wonderful meal in San Gimignano but this was somewhat"high end". We considered most other places reasonably priced and enjoyable. All we used on Hotel List were good.
Events and shows
Did not find any in Certaldo. Some nice bars but nothing much after 10.00pm

“Good service, lovely hotel”

Having read a number of good reviews on trip advisor, opted to stay here on a short break in Tuscany. The hotel is about 4 years old, is well kept, spotless in fact. Some reports say they were dissapointed that it was by a busy bypass. It is situated by a bypass, but busy it is not. If you want a hotel with a pool to lie by in the peaceful Tuscan countryside, this is not the place. But if you want a base to explore this fits the bill. Thestaff are excellent and try very hard. Directed us turn for turn on the first night, offered us drinks on arrival, suggestions for restaurants were accurate and commendable. Had a problem with my keycard, went to reception, changed the card. 5 minutes later safely in the room the receptionist called to check that the card was functioning. Little like this go a long way. Buffet breakfast was ample, fresh coffee made to order. All in all a lovely hotel.

“The best hotel we had in our two weeks trip in Italy”

Nice hotel, great staff! They were very helpful from the in town restaurant selections to wineries directions in the region. A welcome glass of champagne was more than expected! The large and modern room, along with the courteous breakfast staff, made this hotel the best in our two weeks trip in Italy.

“Great hotel for base in Tuscany”

This was a wonderful place to use as home base for exploring Tuscany--equidistant from Pisa, Siena, and Florence, and in a region with many vineyards. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the rooms were modern, and it was a delight to reside there.

“Brilliant hotel -lovely area”

I've got this wrong, haven,t I and have reviewed the hotel and locality where I should have reviewed the trevel experience. This therefore is the travel review. We flew from Manchester to Amsterdam (good restaurant in airport) where lengthy wait before connection to Florence. Surly, unhelpful girl at Sixt car hire at Florence airport (next time we'll use another company) Return journey was chaotic. The incoming flight from Amsterdam was seriously delayed and we were re-routed via Gatwick on a different airline (KLM to BA). Airline girl at Florence was helpful and professional. One of our cases was left off the flight, remained in Florence and we were only reunited with it a couple of days after our return. Florence airport is small with limited facilities. Because of the delays we had to wait in a smallish area where the numbers of people seeking food, seats and general facilities exceeded the ability of the airport to satisfy those demands (food basic but of good quality eaten whilst standing bacause of lack of seating). Not the best ending to the holiday perhaps but nothing could have soured our memories of a wonderful holiday in a brilliant hotel in a lovely area full of friendly, welcoming and helpful people (except for the dreadful Sixt girl.) Incidentally, the car was dirty and from the fact that the girl did not seem to know exactly where it was I suspect it had not been looked at since last returned. We wrote "unchecked" in the box "vehicle condition".Advise you do too.

Area recommendations
We've already commented on Certaldo. Florence is very beautiful but it is very crowded and there are long queues to visit the cathedral .San Gimigniano (and its towers),Siena,Colle Val D'Elsa (take the lift to the ancient upper town), Lucca, and Monteriggioni are all very well worth visiting. The leaning tower of Pisa( theCampanile or belltower to the cathedral) and the cathedral itself are "must-sees" (there is a large car park close to and serving them) but unless you have plenty of time the rest of Pisa can be missed. We only had a week so had to concentrate on the essentials. If you limit yourself to the above you won't go far wrong. Lovely area- my first time there. If you haven't been - GO.

“CLEAN BUT BRINGS YOUR TOWELS!!!!”

Overall I was not impressed with their small town mentality. The administration showed no business acumen whatsoever. This is not the way to treat a client and prospect clients. They had their clause written at the back of the invoice in very fine print. Who reads fine print on vacation. It is called vacation because you want to get away from bureaucracy and redtape not get into it. I know that I will never recommend this hotel to my clients.

Area recommendations
You could always take the train that is walking distance from the hotel to Siena or Florence or Poggibonsi for sightseeing and shopping. It is a small town Certaldo so there is no nightlife or activities, if you want nightlife and activities apart from sightseeing you must go to the city of Florence or Perugia. Florence is 1 hour driving time and Perugia is about 2.5 hours driving but well worth it.
Getting around
You need to rent a car to really see Tuscany at its best. Apart from Florence and its many many things to visit and the wonderful shopping you must visit Volterra, Arezzo, San Gimignano, Perugia, Siena, Lucca and Cortona.
What to pack
If you are going in May or early June pack a raincoat because it rains often. If you decide to stay at this hotel pack your own Towels or you will get slapped with 1.5 euro charge every time you borrow a towel.
Family-friendly activities
The only family-friendly activities are the ones provided by the town in the square (piazza). Or you could take the funicular to the top of Certaldo for the Medieval supper and other activities. There is a great restaurant you should try, it is Messrs Boccacio. The food and service is excellent.
Nightlife
Certaldo is a sleepy town but no nightlife except for MacCool pub if you want to drink beer or watch TV on a large screen. If you are looking for real nightlife you must drive 1 hour to Florence.
Other
The people of Certaldo and World Cup FIFA made our vacation more enjoyable. As for the hotel I think it is overrated.

“Absolutely the Worst!”

Suffice it to say we will not be going back to Hotel Certaldo or to Certaldo at all. The area was very hostile towards Americans. While we expected some of this we were not prepared for the complete and utter open hostility which was shown to us by every single person we met in the area. Be warned if you go that the towns shops and restaurants shut down from about 12 noon to 3:30 or so. If you want something to eat during these times or just want to do a little shopping, tough. You will have to venture out of Certaldo and find yourself another town to visit. If you depend on the Hotel to help arrange activities, reservations, etc. good luck. Long story short, we canceled our trip in the middle of it because of such a horrible experience.

Area recommendations
None. As stated the entire town was openly hostile. This of course doesn't make much sense since presumably they are a tourist economy. Save yourself the time and money and visit somewhere else.
Getting around
Rent a car. The train station looks like it is from another century and there were roaming gangs of hostile kids along with your standard homeless people all over the station. Get yourself a map because you can't depend on the residents of Certaldo to talk to you much less give you directions. If you walk be careful. The hotel will send you out with directions for a 2 minute walk to your destination but you will find that it will be over a half a mile down a major road with no side walks and no street lights.

“Light industrial location but very convenient”

Situated close to a rather unattractive road and in the scruffy part of Certaldo, the hotel is never-the-less one that i would heartily recommend and definately return to. The railway staition is within 7 mins walk with trains to Florence-1hr and Sienna-40mins. The town has everything you might need including some great, reasonably priced eateries. The hotel staff were, without exception, dedicated to good service and although there is no restaurant in the hotel the late and lavish breakfast (served till 12!) meant for us that we rarely troubled to eat lunch. The rooms (we booked a standard) were modern, quiet, light, well-decorated, scrupulously cleaned, and the beds were massive and very comfortable. Fantasticly located for drives into local hill-towns and the Chianti region.

Traveller's tip
If you like history and pre-history, Montereggiano, a medieaval walled town, and especially Volterra with its amazing old-fashioned museum, are not to be missed.
