“Dar Al Andalous”

I would highly recommend Dar Al Andalous if you are planning a trip to Fez. It's location is perfect for exploring the old city and I doubt if you will find a more beautiful riad in Fez.. The staff were excellent and extremely helpful even arranging a trip to the Meknes area. The stay at Dar Al Andalous was 1st class. However, the experience of the souks in Fez was ruined by the leech like behaviour of the stall and shop owners whose tactics included following you, grabbing your elbow and pleading to come look inside. The slightest gaze at anything on display produced a sales attack the would make a double glazing salesman blush. The intrusive intensity meant that the only way to avoid this was to hurry past and not even bother to look, avoiding eye contact at all times. The outcome was of course that I bought absolutely nothing. They need to regulate this behaviour and should look towards Marrakech for how to do this successfully. WARNING : Another extremely disconcerting phenomenon are the young men that immediately accost you as soon as you show the slightest hesitancy in direction. They offer to show you the way saying they want to practice their english / german / italian. Even saying no, they will follow you regardless. If you give in, you will end up where you do not want to be (their uncles shop for example) where you will be put upon to pay them for their "guide services" and to buy something. Be very firm at the outset and do not proceed or let them tag along.

Other
Be prepared for an relentless onslaught of aggresive attention from the stallholders whilst in the souks . Even being perfectly capable of looking after yourself, you will find that it's intensity and their unwillingness to take no for an answer extremely wearing.

“Very Impressed”

The hotel was SO beautiful and calm, like an Oasis in a desert sort of speaking. Well located, on a quiet and clean street but close to the medina interesting streets and markets (not so clean and definetly not so quiet...). Good service, nice breakfast and dinner, very helpful staff and excellent hamman in house!

“An Excellent Choice”

The owner and his wife, and their staff were friendly, flexible, and accommodating. The riad is astonishingly beautiful. The food was excellent. The location ideal. We would recommend Dar al Andalous Riad to anyone traveling to Fes.

“Wonderful place”

Booked this Riad after reading other reviews on expedia/trip advisor. It's great-nice and good value food, great rooms and decor, and a short walk from the medina. Don't book it if you want a swimming pool and beware the 'guides'-the one that was arranged for us by the hotel took us to shop after shop after shop but not one medersa.

“Wonderful Stay in the City of Maze!!”

Once you enter the small door, you will be fascinated by the air of classic but well renovated old traditional house. The room was clean and services of butler, whose name "Hussain", were excellent. I stayed 2 night here in February with my wife and daughter and enjoyed this small but warm hotel very much as well as there home-made Tajin and other traditional dishes.

“A real Arabic dream”

This is a great place to stay, perfectly located in the Medina of Fez. It is an oasis of peace, above all when you come back from the markets of the Medina. The staff is all local, extremely friendly, helpful and caring, they make all efforts to make you feel at home and assist you if you have any need. Breakfast is traditional and very good (the day of our departure they prepared breakfast at 4 am especially for us!); if you decide to have dinner at the hotel (to pay on the side of the hotel bill), the cuisine is excellent and the courtyard has a very special atmosphere. The room was enormous, on two floors, with all comforts and richly decorated in the traditional Andalousian way. The bathroom was large and provided all sizes of clean towels and robes. Everything was impeccably clean, The courtyards had a very traditional and magic touch and reminded me of the Arabian Nights. The location was perfect as it was a few steps away from the famous Bab El Jaloud, at the entrance of the Kasbah and a few steps away from Baghdadi Square, where you can find a taxi at any time of the day or night. I'd highly recommend this Riad.

Area recommendations
Stay in the Medina; the New Town (Nouvelle Ville) is not interesting and is rather polluted. The Medina of Fez is magic, adventurous and fascinating. Just watch out during the night and, generally, learn how to deal with the many "proposals" you receive in the streets. Small taxis (Petit Taxis) are very cheap, just make sure they have the counter switched on.
When to go
September/October or May/June
Getting there
By airplane or by train from Casablanca.
Getting around
Be considerate of the local uses, do not behave like a Western colonizer and do not think the locals will respect you just because you have/give more money than they do. They'll respect you if you can show respect for their culture, if you engage with them in a sale (which can be rather hard and stressful) without giving in too soon but if you keep your word.
What to pack
Clothes for all different occasions - you don't want to look like a stupid tourist but you want to stay comfortable.
Shopping
Learn how to bargain and to distinguish quality merchandise from rubbish.
Dining
The Medina Cafè at Bab El Jaloud is top notch!!! (Cous cous and Brochettes, tea and biscuits)
Nightlife
Not much (unless you're looking for something dodgy), but it's great to walk through the Medina by night, very fascinating, just watch out. GO FOR A HAMMAM at the Maison Blue Riad, it's a real treat! If you're more adventurous, go to a public hammam and meet the locals in an intimate environment.
