The real pluses were the room (we had a room with a spa and it was extremely comfortable and spacious), the friendly staff and Athens itself - what a great city with a wonderful atmosphere. The breakfast was ok, however the lack of fried eggs and the coffee being luke warm took the shine off it a little.
Almost everything was perfect. Very clean and well fitted out and staff were excellent.
Just the shower head is positioned very high on the wall so it is difficult to have a shower without water splashing everywhere! I am used to not having to hold the shower hose myself.... adjustable height showers are preferable, this is a minor detail however.
My wife and I stayed there 3 times within the past month , using it as a home-base pied à terre for brief trips out to the Greek islands and to Istanbul. The staff kindly accommodated our request to leave luggage in their storeroom during our trips away and assisted efficiently and graciously with making taxi and other travel arrangements and responding to ad hoc requests during our stays. Our first room, by the elevator with two twin beds, was the least satisfactory. We mentioned it on our departure for our first trip and thereafter were accommodated in (freely) upgraded rooms with more space, and wonderful air and views.
Some of the facilities are a bit older, but all work well, and the beds are comfortable. The mini-refrigerator in our room worked poorly, and the breakfast-room acoustics made for a din at busy times, but these minor drawbacks are more than offset by the many benefits and advantages of an excellent staff and good price.
We had another hotel booked for Athens but after one night decided to leave because it was so bad. We then went to the Dryades Hotel and it was fantastic, really nice and helpful staff, a clean and pleasant room and really accessible to the city centre.

When choosing a hotel for my three nights in Athens I wanted to avoid the noisy touristy neighborhoods and the seedy area around Omonia. The Proteus fit the bill and offered a good rate. It is rather a long walk to the nearest metro station, Ambelokipi, and a longer walk to the center of Athens. But I am a walker, so no problem there. The hotel is nice, modern, not too big. The neighborhood is mostly residential. The décor of my room looked like something that belonged in a brothel -- red carpeting and pink furniture, but for a few nights it was fine. The hotel does not offer breakfast but there are cafés, even a Starbucks around the corner. On my next visit to the wonderful city of Athens I wold like to stay somewhere closer.

Students and artists reside in this bohemian area filled with low-key bars, old-fashioned cafes and down-to-earth tavernas. A hotchpotch of neoclassical buildings and modern concrete apartment blocks line its grid of busy roads and leafy pedestrian side streets. The University lies close by, and the National Archaeological Museum is a 10-minute walk away.
