Family weekend away

Posted 27-Apr-2014
Pros: This Hotel was excellent value for money and the standard was at an extremely good level to the price paid.
Cons: With children a flexible approach to the use of pool would be good. Also maybe a play area inside and/or out would be great as there nothing nearby
Location: Whilst away we visited Colchester zoo which was about 30 minutes drive away. There was no information within the hotel about any local attractions
After the recent death of my mother our family wanted to escape for a few days. The Hotel was located in a quiet area with the nearest town around 8 miles away. The Staff were extremely polite and went out of their way to assist us with supplying our two small children 2years and baby of 7months with their necessary requirements such as food as there was not a special menu for children. The catering was excellent, although a little expensive for family trip. As a vegetarian the hotel provided options for all meals and with many options for breakfast. We spent some time in the hotel using the swimming pool although we were disappointed as the times for children were restricted and timing wasn't great for the age of our children as they were close to meal times and bed time. The room was spacious, clean and well maintained.

Lovely place to stay

Posted 21-Apr-2014
Pros: Spacious, great facilities and lovely area.
Cons: A bit of an update in decor in some areas, but this is already being done.
We booked for a last minute Easter weekend night away for myself, husband and two children (aged 14 and 11). It was excellent value for a family room, which was really spacious with a view of the golf course. The room had 2 double beds and plenty of room for us all - only downside was that they prepped it for 2 guests rather than 4, but as we were only there for a night it didn't really matter. It was extremely clean and well kept, if a little dated decor wise. The TV also had limited channels, but again for one night it was fine. Our stay included full use of the spa facilities and we spent a lovely afternoon in the pool, steam, sauna and jacuzzi. Children are allowed in the facilities between 5 - 7pm and again in the morning (9am - 10am I think). There are lovely loungers around the pool and all the spa facilities are close at hand. I also had a treatment and the prices are very competitive. We didn't eat in the hotel, but went out to a nearby pub in Nayland, which was excellent. Overall the hotel is in a lovely area and has great facilities for a family night away. They are currently being refurbished and the reception area was looking really nice. I presume some of the more tired corridor areas will eventually get done.

Needed that special something..

The hotel itself was nice and we had a good party in the function room. However the service at check in was average and nobody seemed to be willing to go the extra mile. The room service chap suggested how annoying it was that he would have to go all the way back to get the receipt he forgot to bring - he did not even bring the correct food. They wanted to charge us a 3.50 fee for providing ice (this is despite us booking 15+ rooms between and spending thousands at the bar). The room was okay and clean, but not special considering it was one of the more expensive rooms there.

Could be better

Posted 05-Jul-2013 on Hotels.com
Comfortable beds, cleanliness in large room is good, good spa facilities but tired n run down in corridor to pool- evidence of damp to walls n some repair work being carried out; lift not working (recovering from knee operation so not good having to use the stairs), tile grouting especially at spa pool area appears dirty n needs a good scrub. Food variety was not appetising so we drove to The Ram at Hadleigh instead. Beer was served lukewarm. However we note the diligence of staff working in the swimming pool area - regular checking of the water quality, which we are pleased about. We are not golfers and therefore may not have appreciated fully the facilities of this hotel. Quiet location suits us.

Good service. Large room

Double room was a good size. Due to traffic holdups we arrived after meals had finished being served but the cook stayed on to make sandwiches, salad and also cooked chips for us! 5 stars! Plenty of choice at breakfast.

Heating wasn't working, breakfast very expensive!

Posted 29-Jan-2013 on Hotels.com
I have stayed previously at Stoke-by-Nayland in the summer, and was pleased with the hotel overall for my business trip. I purchased this stay through hotels.com and was disappointed with the fact that the heating wasn't working in the rooms in the midst of a VERY cold winter, with snow on the ground outside. The room rate didn't include breakfast, which was fine and I was aware of this up front, but if you only want a bowl of cereal, you have to pay the same as if you wan't a full English breakfast, which is ridiculous! More than £11, with no middle ground (according to reception). They did say that I could purchase a bacon roll from the golfers lounge, but for a hotel in the middle of the countryside to price a simple bowl of cereal at £11+, is far from ideal. No impressed overall, and will have to think twice before using the hotel again unless these issues are addressed.
