Fabulous hotel - perfect get away

Posted 03-Jul-2015
Pros: Everything was spot on, from staff through to cleanliness and food.
Cons: A valet service would be the only thing I would of said could improve the hotel as the car park is a little far when you have suitcases.
Location: Location wise - Perfect - Surrounded by countryside - I drove to Welwyn Garden City and St Albans while there too (approx 30-50 minutes but worth it)
After a hectic 6 months of work I just needed a quiet getaway - I booked the Executive Suite at this hotel and from the minute I drove up the drive to getting into my room I was surrounded by perfection. The hotel itself is gorgeous, the grounds are perfect to take a nice walk and unwind. The room was second to none, Huge bed, spacious room - views overlooking the garden, the bathroom was the size of most normal hotel room so great for a nice relaxing soak. The staff were all very attentive and polite. I would DEFINITELY recommend this hotel to anyone and I will be returning soon I hope!

Weekend anniversary stay

Posted 08-Jun-2015
Pros: Everything about the building and grounds. The staff. Room and facilities
Cons: Greater recognition of dining customers and service times
On arriving the grounds were spectacular, a stunning building and welcoming staff. Our room was away from the 2 wedding events (as requested) which was appreciated. It would almost be impossible to fault, unfortunately, our evening meal was marred by a near 90min wait for our food to be served with only a brief explanation and apology at the very end - nothing to compensate our wait during or after. And while the food was very nice I would strongly question the £8 supplement for the steak as I felt what was served didn't come close to justifying the extra cost (but maybe I was already on edge after a 90min wait). On the same note, nearly £8 for a Pims and lemonade is extortionate - but I guess you expect a premium charge at certain establishments so quibbling costs seems futile. Had it not been for the evening meal I would struggle not to give a glowing review though so I hope restaurant management consider managing customer satisfaction, whether it be a couple or a party of 10, more seriously as I could easily have been appeased. One final note, on leaving we noticed our bed sheets weren't all that clean. There were a few stains on them which we hadn't noticed (as we didn't check) the previous evening. These things happen I'm sure, and had I noticed I don't doubt they would have been changed on request. The room itself was fantastic, however, clean and comfortable with a pleasant view of the woods behind the Hotel, so I'll end on that positive

VERY tired room

Posted 01-Jun-2015
Pros: The staff at the bar were nice
Cons: The receptionist's response to being told our room was in a poor condition- she just said "Ok". Plus obviously the room's condition.
Location: There's a nice parade nearby which has a lovely tearoom & a pub. Both staffed by nice people with nice food.
We stayed here as we were guests at a wedding. The function facilities were nice enough, the cocktail bar is nice enough, but the condition of the room was very disappointing. We stayed in room 130, which has the following problems: 1). Damp below the window, causing the wallpaper to have peeled away 2). Damp in the corner of the room, which again seemed to have caused the wallpaper to come away from the wall, but this time entirely, so the wall appeared to have been filled in places & left 3). The corner below this damaged area had a pile of dust, which I guess was the result of the filler being sanded 4). There was a handle missing from the TV cupboard & the door was cracked

Lovely elegant hotel set in nice countryside

Posted 01-Jun-2015
We had a very lovely stay. It was one of the most elegant we have been to, like a grand stately house. The food was excellent and the staff very courteous and efficient. We would definitely go there again.

A grand stay...

Posted 01-May-2015 on Hotels
I first stayed at Down Hall on a business trip about 15 years ago and was impressed enough to make a number of return visits whenever I've been in the area. It retains a grand and sumptuous anachronistic feel about it while incorporating everything the modern-day business and leisure guest requires. Very spacious rooms and public areas are a joy to either relax or work in and the service, cleanliness and facilites are all first rate.

disappointing

Posted 29-Apr-2015 on Hotels
The grounds are amazing and the hotel looks great from the outside. Our room however was a different story.. Mold on the walls and the room was really grotty, a hair on the bathroom sink.. and everything badly needed updating. Internet was terrible. Very disappointing overall

Consistantly good

I have used this hotel 5 or 6 times for business travel. It is in a very nice area, the staff have always been friendly and helpful and now that the leisure facilities have been upgraded it is an excellent choice for both business and social visits. Room prices have always been extremely reasonable also.

Room rather small.

Posted 05-Apr-2015
Small room. Very hot, even with heating off. Not sure if bed was as requested on booking with Expedia (queen booked) but felt like we were given a double ! Room On second floor, but no lift to this part of hotel. Breakfast rather disapointing, why can't English hotels serve good coffee like their European counterparts.
