A true 4-star hotel for 2-3 star price. Great room, fantastic pool and sauna, and the only ice-making machine we have found in Holland! Located next to a beautiful lake, great food (highly recommend the meat croquettes), and helpful staff. Forget staying in Groningen, stay here and enjoy the peacefulness and luxury.

Overall, this is a good quality hotel with helpful, friendly staff and good facilities. Within reasonable walking distance of the centre of Haren where there is a good choice of restaurants and cafes although not all are open on Sunday evening. Clean and comfortable room - reasonably spacious. Good breakfast buffet but eating in the restaurant for other meals is expensive for what you get (although food prices in hotels in Holland appear to have increased in recent times).

I found the experience at the Hampshire hotel a pleasent one, staff were accommodating at all times with a high level of service, the rooms were clean and tidy and the beds were comfortable, only criticism I could say was that the A C was not powerful enough as it was very warm,so all in all it was a very pleasent stay.

Great location in Groningen. Next door is a market that has great coffee.
The hotel itself is what it is: a local hotel that is oriented toward meeting with friends and family than a luxury hotel with a luxury room. The hotel's downstairs bar, eating area, and back benches are great. The room is very small and the bathroom is even smaller. Actually, the bathroom is a pre-fab boat bathroom. It is literally a fiberglass box that they inserted in the room, which is why the room is so small. If are comfortable with small, functioning European hotel rooms, you will be good. If you are from the States and are expecting lots of room to stroll around, you will be disappointed.

"Lovely, historic and central – though not perfect"
It would be perhaps unfair to dismiss an undoubtedly friendly, characterful and well located hotel purely because the promised WiFi didn't work. But sadly I had booked this particular hotel for a two-night stay – squeezed in between Berlin, Lake Balaton, London, Brighton and then Budapest – purely around the fact that WiFi would be available here. My plan was to work around the region by day and rely upon WiFi here by night. In the end, I lost work, and money, because I couldn't do what I needed to do at the place I was staying in. Though I pointed out the problem immediately upon arrival, otherwise friendly staff seemed to take an eon doing anything about it. As I was checking out, 36 hours later, I was told that the problem lay with the server. There seemed to be no sense of urgency to get the problem pinpointed and fixed. The sauna, promised when booking on this site, wasn't available – I think it may have been more a case of someone offering in-room treatments rather than a sauna room. Other more minor complaints: only one powerpoint (of two) worked in the room, and water temperature takes a long while for the taps to register, so you're waiting ages for the water to turn properly hot or cool down. Plus points: downtown location excellent and if you're here for a romantic getaway, the historic setting and courtyard restaurant should make for a memorable stay.
