A busy hotel with good size rooms. The breakfast experience was difficult. Too noisy and mediocre food

Gorgeous Hotel with views of Edinburgh Castle

Posted 30-Jun-2015
We had a lovely time. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Gorgeous restaurant and bar areas. Right in the middle of New town, close to everything. Many of the hotels in Edinburgh do not have air conditioning but the Waldorf does. We particularly enjoyed having a cool room. Make restaurant reservations early. I would highly recommend.

Lovely! Concierge was wonderful!

Posted 19-Jun-2015
Lovely! Concierge was wonderful! Easy getting around. Walk to many restaurants, pubs & shopping. Easy tour bus and taxi. Took our kids ages 15 & 13. They enjoyed it. Only negatives- Lots of construction and some homeless. Kids cannot be in pubs after 6pm. If the pub has a bar that is visible, I believe kids cannot be in there after 8pm.

The hotel met all of our expectations. The staff was lovely and very helpful. The hotel is in a fabulous location, convenient to many of the touristy spots. Rooms were comfortable and large. We had a blast.

Great Way to end our Scottish Trip

Posted 10-Jun-2015
Pros: Location, luxurious touches, service
We spent the last night of a three week trip at The Caledonian. The location is ideal, near the Castle, Princes Street Gardens, plenty of shopping, and the Grass market. When we stepped int our room, we were very impressed with all the fine details, a luxurious bed, beautiful furnishings, a large a bright bathroom, but the best part was the mazing view of the castle, straight across form our room. The views, especially at night, are spectacular. Of note though is that this is the side of the hotel that is alongside a busy road and it was kind of noisy, so if you need real quiet, you might opt for another room. A class act all the way. Highly recommended.

Room was awesome. Neil the gentleman guarding the gate saved my life when we couldn't find parking. Took my keys and said enjoy your stay. Perfect hotel in my book.

Improvements have made an impact

Pros: Location, location, location. You can save a fortune in cab rides because it is near everything in town. Clean and luxurious.
Cons: Breakfast. You order coffee and toast. Ours had to be chased up and toast was cold. Better next morning.
Location: Castle end of Princes Street. Busy road obviously but didn't disturb us. So any of the city centre attractions and buses/cabs to anywhere outside.
Stayed at the Caledonian a few years ago. Same hotel but it has been freshened up and feels more modern and inviting. The extra cost of a castle view is worth it because it is a really wonderful sight and lifts the whole room. Beds comfortable. Bathroom spacious. We were lucky that our room was near a lift but I think the layout of the hotel means that you could well walk some distance to one if your room was elsewhere. This was a problem with the old hotel and it looks like it remains. Breakfast was good but no way worth £17. Don't pay extra for it. Location is really excellent. Just a few small gripes. We arrived at 2.30 pm and were told room not ready (fine as check in is 3pm). Said we would go for lunch and return. Took our mobile number and just as we sat down to eat (5 minutes later) call from reception to say room ready. We would have waited guys. Our room had a large raised platform under window. What is that for? You could stand on it I guess but it looked odd and part of the trim had pulled away leaving a bit of sharp wood. In top hotels like this, you expect minor issues to be dealt with. Enjoyed my swim in the pool and session in Jacuzzi. I later found out I should have gone down some stairs and registered. All a bit haphazard but it is a good addition to the hotel. As they have a specialist spa, why not have those products in the room?

We celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary by staying at the Caledonian. The room was not quite ready when we checked in, so we got 2 complementary drinks vouchers for the Caley Bar - a great way to start our week end break. The restaurant was great too, as was the breakfast - actually we will probably do the whole thing again in a few years time with the kids as they apparently eat for free being under 10 years of age.
