HUGE SPIDER on bed! Poor staff response.

Posted 14-Sep-2014
Pros: The hotel looks very nice.
Cons: Let's see here... fixing the pest problem (huge spiders in the room) would be a great start. Fixing the hotel staff attitude would be second.
Location: This is very near the airport, just a 5-10 minute drive to get there. Not much to do nearby, pub is ok but had to keep going to the bar for service.
This is an excellent looking hotel; an old house that has been updated to a very pleasing degree. However, any questions about how large spiders get in Scotland were answered while I was lying in bed, working on my tablet in the dark, and heard something scuttle across the sheet near my head/shoulder. I sit bolt upright, and jump out of bed - turning on the lights. A quick inspection finds a rather large, young adult wolf spider. I dispose of said intruder, and ring reception and let them know of my experience. The lady in the phone acts as thought this is commonplace, and that having a spider twice as large as a 2 pound coin IN THE BED with me, near my head, is not an issue at all. I speak with the manager on duty at checkout, and her response isn't any better. "Oh, I call those garden spiders - I get them in my house." What?! I didn't pay to stay in your spider infested house, I paid to stay in a pest-free four star hotel. I reiterate that one should NEVER find a spider that large in a hotel of this standing, but she's not convinced that she should do anything (not even apologize!). Apparently taking the live specimen down to the front desk and setting it loose would have been a better illustration of the situation. I guarantee she and her coworker would have fled instantly, screaming as they went. I did send an email to the GM before I left the hotel. He claimed that Scotland spiders were harmless, but did apologize about the experience I had. So there's that.

Close to the airport and fabulous!

Rooms are fantastic... sitting room in the room, television while you have a spa tub. Gym, full pool, hydro spa - great!, sauna, steam, restaurants great. No airport noise.... cows in pasture across the street:)

this hotel was located conveniently for the airport, we found it to be faultless, both in accomodation and staff.

Overnight near the airport

Posted 27-Aug-2014
A great end to our vacation. Excellent stopover en route back overseas from Edinburgh Airport. We had an early flight and this suited our needs well. We enjoyed an excellent dinner in the bistro. Only sad part was I had no time to experience the wonderful looking spa and facilities. This is a good stopover option for EDI.

Cons: only problem we had was an awful musty smell in our bathroom- room 420- but sure there must be a solution hope its found soon as it was very strong
Location: late arrival- early departure, no time to see
quick check-in at a late hour, comfy room with large bed and good bedding, good shower, tasty breakfast and with breakfast it was cheaper than the local chains!!

Nice country hotel with vast grounds

Posted 24-Aug-2014
We had a nice stay for a family holiday with children and grand parents. Nice grounds, clean rooms, excellent breakfast and good pool and spa facilities. Reception staff could have been more helpful. We reached late in the night with children and elderly parents but were left to our own devices to find access point to our rooms which was not easy with the complicated lay out and to our rooms and sort out our luggage. I would have expected help with both given the star status and price paid. We also found the timings for using the pool to be very restrictive, even more so for children, such that it became quite difficult to use these excellent facilities on most days. Hotel seems to give preference to their non - residential day time Spa customers at the expense of those who are staying on site.

Lovely comfortable hotel not far from city centre

Posted 18-Aug-2014
Pros: Extremely comfortable bedroom
Location: Sitting in lovely grounds, close to airport and short taxi journey into the city centre
Very pleasant staff at reception on arrival, efficient room service late at night and very comfortable bedroom and bathroom. Didn't get a chance to use the other facilities as only stayed the one night, but would definitely recommend this hotel to others. Close to the airport and only a short 15 min taxi ride into the city.

Nice hotel but

Posted 31-Jul-2014
Pros: exclusivity
Cons: customer care in the restaurant. better high chairs. help your self to drinks at the breakfast buffet.
Location: in an industrial area, however once at hotel you would not know.
the staff in the restaurant, very very slow. The hotel is beautiful, lovely surroundings, nice decor, friendly front of house staff. The restaurant, we booked in for dinner at 6 o'clock with a two year old, it took ages to get served and the restaurant was not busy, the starter came quite quickly however everything got slower and slower to the point were my two years old was running amok through boredom. I had to find staff to get napkins, I had to find staff to get menu for desert, I had to find staff get the bill and to sign it off. note I had to find staff, not call them over...... The next day at breakfast the next day was the same, we asked for high chairs, the flimsy plastic high chair that came was too small for my friend to force her 18 month old in to let alone me to try with my two year old. The highchair did not have a lift off tray and therefore you had to try to twist and force legs in tot he leg holes. This we refused to do. However we watched in horror as the poor woman next to us tried to get her child out of one high chair with the help of a member of staff to pries the child out. A very uncomfortable 5 mins for all!!!! Also for some unbeknown reason although breakfast is a combination of buffet and order from the menu - you have to order drinks, that is if you can find someone to get them and also remember to fill your order.

Quiet country setting!

Posted 30-Jul-2014
We so enjoyed returning to the peace and quiet of the Norton House after the hustle and bustle of downtown Edinburgh. Looking out our bedroom window to the beautiful fields of wild flowers, cows and trees was so relaxing. The breakfast was a lovely addition. It was only 20 minutes away to the heart of the city along the Glasgow/Corstorphine Rd. We had a room in the main house. The bathroom had just been remodelled. The room itself was big enough with its own fireplace etc. but was a little on the tired side. We would definitely stay here again.
