Tired, shabby and dirty

Posted 04-Sep-2014
Pros: Great location
Cons: The hotel needs renovating and repairing
Location: North Berwick is a delightful town surrounded by stunning coastline and many great links golf courses
We are two couple who booked a 2 night stay in the delightful town of North Berwick. Our expectation was that the MacDonald Marine would be a high quality hotel that would provide for a relaxing and restful couple of days overlooking the beautiful coastline. Instead, we found the hotel to be run down, in need of renovation and repair and, worst of all, it was dirty. The building itself is stunning with a superb location. From the outside, it looks everything you could expect. Unfortunately, the inside did not match the expectation and seems to be suited to accommodating groups of golfers wanting to experience the large number of superb links courses along the coastline. We reported our disappointment on arrival and on departure and have still not received satisfaction from the hotel.

Good location

I suppose the the Marine hotel in North Berwick is a classic old hotel. We were sent to our room with keys that did not work and returned to the lobby to get in a queue behind a group of 8 who were checking in. The room was modest and the bathroom was about 4' x 6'; a large person could not have turned around the the bathroom. If you are going to book the MacDonald Marine Hotel and Spa, manage your expectations downward.

Hotel of No Return

Posted 14-Nov-2013
Pros: Their Roxburghe and Marine hotels have convinced me not to use Macdonald hotels again.
Cons: Needs an inspection by Head Office
A disappointing return to the hotel, now under MacDonald management. Reception was under-manned, both "in" & "out", with the impression that the hotel was doing a favour by allowing you to use it. Like their Roxburghe hotel in Edinburgh, they dispense with Restaurant tablecloths in supposedly 4 star hotels. A canteen mentality! Only evening meal food (with a guest) - soup not as ordered, but turned out to closely resemble Heinz tinned tomato, and probably was (all three of us agreed), steak was a "reheat" job - pink as ordered but dried out. They had a wedding dinner on, and seemed under-staffed. Does one complain in front of a guest? Room was not well made-up, towels were not "4 star", and dirty breakfast trays were left in the first and second floor corridors morning to evening waiting removal.

Spoilt in Scotland

Lovely hotel, in beautiful North Berwick. Room was spotlessly clean, breakfasts superb and the outdoor thermal spa under the sun, just special. We will return.

Used the hotel as a base to meet up with friends who live locally. Great hotel with lovely breakfasts. Never got the chance to use all the facilities or enjoy an evening meal so will definitely be returning!

Nice hotel with excellent views on Bass Rock etc.

Pros: Beautiful sea views, friendly staff, comfortable room, good bathroom with safety bar in shower and heated towel rail. Space heater available.
Cons: More staff, and more diligent room "maids"; prompter dining service; consistent and less confusing room heating.
Location: Good site for visiting East Lothian. Railway station nearby with service to Edinburgh. We enjoyed walking along the golf course, and down to the beach
Not enough staff for such a busy hotel; rooms made up only late in the afternoon, and inadequately, with soiled facecloths left behind, and not replaced, spotty replacement of water glasses and toiletries. Room heating having to be requested sometimes, by someone who may be busy for a while doing something else--I was cold if returning to my room before 5pm or so, and no room heat at night. Dining room food excellent, but service very slow because not enough people; typical wait of 20-30 min. after being seated at reserved table before being able to order, then the same before being served by nice people who were almost running to and fro the kitchen every evening during our stay.
