Tired, shabby and dirty

Posted 04-Sep-2014
Pros: Great location
Cons: The hotel needs renovating and repairing
Location: North Berwick is a delightful town surrounded by stunning coastline and many great links golf courses
We are two couple who booked a 2 night stay in the delightful town of North Berwick. Our expectation was that the MacDonald Marine would be a high quality hotel that would provide for a relaxing and restful couple of days overlooking the beautiful coastline. Instead, we found the hotel to be run down, in need of renovation and repair and, worst of all, it was dirty. The building itself is stunning with a superb location. From the outside, it looks everything you could expect. Unfortunately, the inside did not match the expectation and seems to be suited to accommodating groups of golfers wanting to experience the large number of superb links courses along the coastline. We reported our disappointment on arrival and on departure and have still not received satisfaction from the hotel.

Usual High Standard

This was the second Macdonald hotel we'd used on a week long vacation to Scotland and again the experience was a memorable one. This is a large golf resort type hotel within walking distance of the beach. We are not golfers but the hotel caters for everyone, and the location is perfect for walks into the small town or a stroll along the extensive beaches. The hotel is slightly dated but somehow this seems to add to its charm. Rooms are spacious and well equipped. We didn't have dinner there as we 'got stuck' in a local pub that had some fantastic beers, but we did get to speak to the chef before the menus were published and he told us what he'd got and how he was thinking of cooking it - an indication that everything is freshly (and creatively) prepared. Fantastic hotel.

Fab Find

We love the coast and the Marine is superbly located about 100m from the beach, with superb views & its a fairly short walk into the centre of the lovely wee town of North Berwick. The only disappointment was there was no wi-fi in our room and no explanation as to why that couldn't be fixed and the hotel bar prices were steep.

A curates egg

Like a lot of chain hotels these days, this one was great in some ways and terrible in others. Recently refurbished the rooms were fine and clean win flat screen TVs and good beds. But then they also have those two inch deep baths that are supposed to save water but just end up annoying everyone because they don't immerse you in any way. Likewise the managers are perfectly good but a lot of the servers wre just incompetent teenagers and what you got for breakfast every morning was a kind of pot luck. It's a shame that these places are not run with care and love because they could be great.

Ideal location but disappointed

Location perfect for our short break but we felt the quality of service let the Hotel down. The attitude and lack of response from both Reception staff and Dining room staff to three separate issues was unacceptable from a Hotel of this rating. The Pool, thermal suite and changing rooms are in need of attention and repair.
