“Not so Grand”
The Grand is looking rather less than Grand right now. The room was tired and the bathroom very much in need of an upgrade. The free wifi didn't work. The only major plus was the rate which was very reasonable.
“A fine old hotel”
The staff were extremely polite and friendly. The hotel looks impressive and was perfectly placed for an evening out/shopping in Brighton. Breakfast was good, and I enjoyed people watching in the large dining area. My only gripes would be that the room looked a little tired and had a strange smell, but the bedding and bathroom were clean.
“Faded opulence”
Our first impressions were not good as we were given room 533. A small, dark room with a completely frosted window which only opened 3 inches. This was accompaied by the continuous noise of industrial fans and a generator from the adjacent building. We made our way back to reception and explained how unimpressed we were and we were imediately upgraded to a beautiful double aspect room overlooking the sea. The young lady called Rachel on reception should be commended for the calm, efficient way in which she handled the situation, always with a smile and with sincerity, not the faintest sign of indignation. In fact all staff were young, enthusiastic and smiling which goes a long way to create a good atmosphere. The maintenance of the hotel needs desperate attention. It is a lovely buliding with a lot of history and a good name behind it. What a shame then that general maintenance such as peeling paint and lightbulb changes in the antique glass chandelier made it feel as though, because it was part of a large group of hotels, that it had lost the attention to detail and the care it deserved. Surely this could be easily remedied. The food was excellent, as was the service and the location cannot be bettered. Room 533 should be a store room and nothing else. Come on De Vere you have everything in place to be excellent rather than just good. With a little more effort The Grand could once again stand out from the crowd and live up to it's name..
“An excellent hotel”
The Grand is an outstanding hotel: first-class customer service and lovely rooms and food. My first choice in Brighton.
“Sort out the shower”
Everything about hotel was great except for a weak shower(rinsing hair after washing was a problem).A better shower would have really made a difference. Excellent service and breakfast !
“Birthday Treat with a little Hiccup!”
Upon arriving at the Hotel the room we were allocated was actually occupied by another guest. So I had to complain to the staff. The second room was by all means a down grade and once again I had to complain. After all this was my birthday treat! This situation had a successful outcome and the room I was allocated was very nice and a bottle of wine was offered too. The staff were very pleasant throughout this. On the downside we were interrupted by housekeeping at different times, perhaps they could be better informed.
“Complete disappointment!”
Let me tell you, I was so looking forward to my visit to Brighton and stay at this hotel. It didn't come cheap but since it was the weekend of our one-year Anniversary together with my other half, we decided - what the hell. Check-in was nice and easy and we were attended by a friendly staff. We received a room on the 4th floor. They gave us one of these magnetic room keys in the shape of a "key" which was made of solid plastic. Everytime we went out I was worried I was going to snap the key in half in my pocket. The check-in counter was overlooking the stylish bar area. Nice decors, suitable furniture for a slick and classic look. A lift got us up to the 4th floor and looking down the staircase was magnificent. I have to admit, when we got to our room, it was quite a disappointment considering the money we paid for in this 4-star hotel. The room was small and had NO air-conditioning nor fan. The windows were frosted, couldn't look out. You were able to open the window about 3 inches wide to let some cool air in. We also found out that the hotel didn't do mini-bars. We had a stinking mini-fridge in our room because it hasn't been used for ages. They had cabled internet but NO WIFI in our room. And since we had iPads, we were told by the frontdesk to feel free to come down to the lobby to do our WIFI internet (at 2 AM). Will definitely not be staying at this hotel again on our next trip to Brighton nor do I recommend this hotel to anyone else.
“Hotel puts image before service”
We are frequent visitors to Brighton but this was our first stay at the Grand. We decided to stay there to celebrate a birthday. Unfortunately we were very disappoined. The hotel has a chaotic checking-in process with front desk staff contradicting each other. Our room was tired and scruffy with missing furniture. There was dirty room service crockery left in the corridor all day. Although we had intended to dine there in the evening, in view of the above experiences we gave it a miss. Fortunately we were only there for one night. We should have remained loyal to one of the other main hotels in Brighton.
“Never Again!”
Never again would I stay at this hotel! What a shame as I spent my honeymoon and my second honeymoon there many years ago! It is now next door to a concert hall and I was unable to stay in my room all day or get to sleep until well after midnight from the booming noise of the concert and then the girls screaming outside! The hotel is very very dated and is in desperate need of refurbishment. It is criminal the way they have allowed such a Grand Old Dame to turn into a seedy old 3 star hotel! The staff were kind but there was not much they could do. When I complained about the noise in the room they said .. "we are sorry but no-one has ever complained before" and that was that! Shame as it was one of my favourite hotels.
“Can't wait to go back”
Nice hotel with great location.
