Friendly service The Ladies on the reception were attentive. Wonderful English Cooked Breakfast, topped off by a Raspberry Danish which was delicious

Horrendous Restaurant Expereince

Posted 28-Jun-2015
It's a long story but, in summary, we booked the hotel restaurant for 7:30pm. We did not have our order taken till just before 9pm and eat our main course till after 10pm. An appalling restaurant manager lectured us in Basil Fawlty style about why it was our fault because there were so many customers that evening. I have eaten in many restaurants all over the world. This was my worst experience!

Good position for every attraction in Brighton

Posted 26-Jun-2015
Pros: Good position, great staff and good food . Had room with sea view plenty of towels and gowns as well ,good comfortable bed
Cons: This is an old hotel and in need of some tender loving care but on the whole good
Location: Good location close to the lanes and pavillion
The hotel is in excellent position close to the Lanes and Pavillion and in walking distance some lovely old pubs which are sadly lacking in most towns and also great seafood restaurants to eat in.

Very centrally situated on the main seafront drive

Posted 21-Jun-2015
Pros: We liked the hotel cleanliness and good breakfast facilities with helpful, friendly and cheerful staff. It's location is also excellent .
Cons: Room could do with air conditioning
Location: excellent and safe location , minutes walk from all the main areas of interest in Brighton.
A pleasant hotel with very good and friendly staff. Excellent cleanliness throughout and very good breakfast. The classic double room we had did not face the sea but it was very clean and good comfortable bed. The window did open partially to alleviate the excess heat inside the room which we found slightly annoying as we could not find the heat source ( suspect underfloor). The hotel did provide a fan cooler unit as no aircon installed. Excellent bathroom with good shower and bath facility.

Comfortable distances from places of interest.

Posted 17-Jun-2015
Pros: The courteous and helpful nature of the staff.
We wanted to be able to walk to the Town Hall for a marriage and then back after a meal in town. The hotel was just right for this and to walk the lanes, have other meals when wanted, go shopping, visit the Pavilion and museum, see the art graffiti. We also need our car for seeing relatives in and around Brighton and the staff were very helpful with parking and recovery of the car when needed. Breakfast was good and it was nice to sit in the front overlooking the sea. A good start to the day. Just right for a couple of evenings within the town.

Substantially Overpriced

Posted 15-Jun-2015
Pros: Nice friendly staff, good location, great breakfast.
Cons: Temperature controls in the room would have made our stay much more comfortable. Our room was sweltering.
Location: On the waterfront. Biking, jogging, walking along the beach is very convenient. Relatively easy to walk to shopping, dining, etc.
The location is good. The hotel is sea-front, with great views out of the dining room and some rooms have verandas looking out over the water. Double rooms all appear to come with a king-size bed--if you want two beds, this is not the place to stay. Our room was very hot, with no way to adjust the temperature. The hotel itself is very nice, and has some historical significance as the place that the IRA tried to kill Margaret Thatcher. However, it is right next door to a Hilton, which would have comparable room rates with a higher level of comfort. The staff was very friendly, and breakfast in the dining room (free with room, at least the night we stayed) was excellent. The hotel was just very expensive.

Friendly luxury

Posted 09-Jun-2015
Pros: The surroundings and the service
Cons: Nothing for us
Location: The hotel is right on Brighton seafront and within a short walk of the beach and the main shops, restaurants and the Brighton Centre.
The hotel is amazing and the Victorian architecture hides an interior which is both modern and stylish. The staff could not be more helpful and polite and every need was catered for. We only stayed for one night and there was a large wedding and 59th birthday party going on but neither of these impacted on our stay or the service provided to us. The breakfast was excellent with a huge choice of food and the room was very comfortable. All in all we had a great stay and can't wait to go back again.

Decent, but let down by a few fundamentals

Posted 08-Jun-2015
Pros: Service, lobby area and bar.
Cons: Cooler, less stuffy rooms. Better pillows (or a choice). Not much they can do about small rooms!
Location: Great location, well located for all central activities.
My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in May '15. We found the lobby area impressive and indeed grand. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. It is a big and busy hotel, so they are all working hard - but they remain professional, helpful and friendly. So the service and the communal areas are the highlight. It slips a little after that unfortunately. We had a standard double room without a sea view. Seems to be the most common room type. The rooms are old and have been modernised but are very small. The beds are therefore also small, but comfortable enough. The pillows, however, are those awful pillows that look soft and comfortable, but disappear completely as soon as you touch them, giving little or no support. And I didn't see any option to replace them with a "proper" pillow. Annoying, but not the biggest issue. The real pain was that the rooms were so hot and stuffy and stale inside. To the point where it was uncomfortable to be in the rooms and hard to sleep properly. It was 16-18 degrees outside at most, but the rooms were like a sauna at times. There is no air con (just a small fan in the wardrobe, so this is obviously a known issue) and the windows only open a very small amount and the non sea-view rooms face walls outside so there is very little air flow. A friend (who paid 3 times the price) had a sea view room and the sea breeze removed this problem for him. It's a shame you need to pay through the nose for a fancy room just to get a decent night's sleep.
