I walked into the hotel shortly after 3pm to try to check in only to be stopped at the entrance by a very aggressive and unpleasant member of their staff who told me I couldn’t stay there before he even asked for my name or reservation number. He blamed Hotels.com for making the wrong reservation and was rudely told to go away and find another place to stay. The experience left me feeling shaken, humiliated and belittled. I will NEVER use Hotels.com or The Strand Hotel in Eastbourne again.

AVOID BOOKING
Doesn’t even deserve 1 star. The worst experience and staff. I booked a room for 22nd October 2022 but when I arrived, there was a man sitting at a desk refusing our stay despite people coming in and out of the hotel. They handed us a number to call (The hotel number) and all they did was cut the phone on me. I then had to find a last minute room at one of the other hotels along the seafront. They told us that the Strand is being used to house refugees but are still taking bookings and have been refusing all bookings and refusing refunds. I still haven’t been able to get through to the hotel property. The staff at the door were rude and the man I spoke to on the phone was even ruder and dropped the call once I mentioned that I wanted a refund. I also think it’s wrong that online bookings are still active on sites when all they’re doing is taking your money and refusing your stay.

A no no!
Check-in was very easy and the receptionist was pleasant. Room was clean and bed comfortable enough. It was really hot in the room while outside was cooler it no air circulating in the room and the top window could only be opened a tiny bit. Fire doors slammed and people shouting coming in and out at any time at night. Not recommended at all. Very very noisy and too hot everywhere in the hotel

Poor!
I arrived at the hotel and was told that I needed to pay £1 by card in order to pay a deposit (I don’t believe this was mentioned when booking the hotel) - I didn’t have my card on me so I wasn’t able to access my room until a friend paid the £1 using his card. When I got to the room, the smell was unbelievable - it smelt like someone had just been to the toilet in there. The room was old-fashioned, and I ended up not staying the night due to how bad it was.

Narnia wardrobe toilet and shower, disappointing
Although hotel clean, room very disappointing, toilet and shower were in the ends of a wardrobe, very very tiny, no room for movement especially in the shower, could only just close the door to have a shower, not good for people who are bigger than size 18!! Almost had to walk in backwards to use the toilet. Curtains very tatty all ripped down the edges. First night fire alarm set off at 1.30am, no apologies for this or explanation. We booked to pay at hotel on arrival due to Covid as stated on hotels.com websire but OYO tried to take the money at 1am on Sunday morning before the day we were supposed to arrive and had to deal with call from Fraud Team with my bank, when explained to hotelier they said OYO always take the money the day before and we were lucky they didn't cancel our booking. No food facilities available although restaurant and bar was nicely decorated. Unfortunately if it wasn't for the beautiful weather the days of our stay we would have left.

apart from the view which you pay extra for. hotel very run down , lift not working whole stay lots of stairs between ground and 2nd floor . are room was a double they had pushed 2 singles together so u had a massive dip in middle . no mattress protectors .shower in a cupboard . green sink from the 60s taps leaked. and only 1 plug available unless u want ya tv unpluged. uneven floor boards asked for glass of tap water with ice server had to call manager make sure it was free. i kid u not. only good thing was we could leave are bag on check out as are train was later on in the day. unfortunately wont stay again. hotel desperately needs a revamp .

Ok but would not pay that much for the room
The seaview rooms was ok good location as just at the beach , rooms are not cleaned daily so you cannot expect fresh towels or bins emptied on a regular basis , you cannot open the windows wide because of security this can be an issue on really hot days and nights. There is a kettle but the sink is too small so you need to fill it in with a bottle or mugs . Shower was clean but on the small size can be an issue if you like or need your space . The room is non smoking but there was cigarette butts and ashes on the window sill outside that could be easily cleaned . We asked for a second key but had to insist to get one not sure why it was an issue . The carpets in the corridors and hallways smell a bit and need refreshing.

I would go back
The staff at the The Strand were really really helpful. I met with my daughter and she needed somewhere to feed the baby. The staff went above and beyond to make this easy for her(brand new mum, baby a week old). I absolutely appreciated this. The room was big enough, quiet and clean.

Is this a halfway house?
The hotel is being used primarily as a halfway house, with very loud, inebriated residents walking maskless around the property at all hours. The staff appeared to do little to stop this. I wouldn't suggest advertising this venue as suitable for families or couples until it is functioning as a hotel again. I would not feel safe bringing my wife or children here.

Nice entrance to check in. Staff friendly. Bed very comfortable, toilet area very small with ridiculous vinal slack doors which are very noisy when using in the night. Shower ok. Bar area very nice and drinks reasonably priced. Would stop again.

Excellent value, will stay again on my next trip
We chose at first the standart room which was a little bit on the small size for a couple but then moved to a seaview double room which was great the view is fantastic any time of day we liked the fact that shower room and toilet are seperated the bed was very large and comfortable . Staff were nice and helpfull and the location is great near nice beach spots and loads of local shops , pubs and restaurant .

Worst hotel experience ever
We stayed in this hotel for two nights, due to almost last minute booking we paid 75 GBP/night for a tiny room. Furniture is very old, bed uncomfortable, bathroom really tiny, very thin walls through which you can hear everything. Lift is for one person only, felt very unsafe. The hotel says that there is a parking available, although there is no dedicated parking belonging to the hotel, you have to park in the streets around (if you are lucky enough to find a parking space). On the second day after arrival we found out in the morning that our room doors dont staz locked after you close them. That was around 8am. Receptionist told us that the maintenance person comes at 10am and will have a look at it - we were not really happy about this delay but nothing we could do. The maintenance came at 5 pm to fix this - after that our doors were locked after closure, but you had to insert card several times and try to open them afterwards. Towel holder fell of the wall while taking the towel out of it. The only good thing is the location of the hotel, directly at the beach. Overall, cannot recommend, avoid this place if you can.

Very run down
Window wouldn’t open (on a 30 degree day) and no fan. Bathroom door wouldn’t stay closed, and toilet took 10 gos to flush. All in all, not a nice stay!

Brilliant everything
Omg amazing location. Such wonderful staff. Excellent assistance with booking nice restaurant and taxis. Room was basic but clean and comfortable. Room bit hot and hard to open windows. Suggest more fans if heatwave continues. But overall all 5 rooms were great. Thank you

Not very good. The lift was dirty, the guests didn’t wear masks and neither did the male staff on duty on 1st August. The room was below 2 stars. Won’t stay again.

Note to whom it may concern
After about five previous stays, The Strand Hotel decided to refuse service to me because for various private reasons I do not have a passport. Recently I had occasion to visit the local council housing dept and the person I spoke to pointed out that "birth cert + NI number + bank account" equals enough ID for anyone. (And backed up my theory that the 1971 Immigration Act is legal deadwood). So, had the hotel been a lettings agency there would have been no ambiguity that by refusing to serve me they were committing an illegal act of discrimination. And by not refunding my booking money, committing theft.

The hotel was terribly dated, everything was very old and tired. The room was not clean, very dusty and had a horrible smell. We checkout shortly after checking in, we didn’t want to spend the night there.

Good value for money.
Good value for money, right on the front. The room was adequate and clean. The radiator did not work properly but we were brought a convector heater to use. Parking on road but difficult to find a space. Lift very small but we managed. Would stay there again. Did not eat there as family nearby.

Great location
The room was lovely and warm, with a comfortable bed. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The shower had little water pressure and even less hot water. We also found the toilet difficult to flush

Amazingly friendly staff, house keeping was excellent, the bed and room was made and cleaned every day with clean bedding at least twice a week . The food was always of high quality, I thoroughly enjoyed my 25 days stay .
