“A Fine Stay”

The room is a bit small and crowded, but very clean, which is extremely important to me. I expected a somewhat higher quality breakfast than I got. The location is great! Overall, I would recommend staying there.

“A disappointing experience”

The Marriot was disappointing. We had stayed in the Marriot, Brisbane, a couple of weeks before and had a wonderful experience. But, not this time. The 'double' room was no more than a single with no room to move around; if the wardrobe door was open, you could not get to the bathroom; if someone was sitting at the desk, you could not get between it and the bed. The shower was ineffective; no minibar nor working fridge. Breakfast was ordinary at best; bar prices were simply too high (£5.75 for a medium glass of wine); and the complementary newspaper failed to arrive two days out of three. Internet connection was prohibitively expensive; surely it should be free in a modern, international hotel? The final straw was a charge of £15.20 for an 19-minute local call. Staff were helpful and we had a lovely view of the Cathedral and the Castle. However, it is not a hotel we would go back to. It is tired and needs some money spent on the corridor decor and the inside of the lifts. I asked for a comment form and was told it would be sent by e-mail. We will send the Hotel our, hopefully constructive, comments.

Area recommendations
The Cathedral and Castle area is great. Both the main attractions have guided tours which are well worth the money. There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurant around this area for all tastes and budgets. Try a walk along the river on the opposite bank from the cathedral; the best photographs can be taken from there. If you have a car, a drive to the Angel of the North is worth taking; you can get right up close and it is a really impressive sculpture.

“Great Location for Visiting Durham”

What you would expect from a Marriott hotel .Breakfast excellent .Good leisure facilities. Had a room over the leisure facilties and the room was very hot and this was late March and no air conditioning, other than opening the window, which worked a treat.Great location, a short walk to the City.Parking available but could be a bit tight when the hotel is busy though the concierge was very effective at cramming the cars in.

Area recommendations
The City is very compact ansd oozes history.Walks along the river are idyllic.Beamish 12 miles north is a must but avoid peak season if you can.

“Excellent value, very convenient hotel”

Very comfortable bedrooms, literally a minutes walk from the city centre. Free off street secure parking. Breakfast is an all you can eat buffet (though some people may prefer a freshly cooked I suppose). Can't fault the staff - everyone was very friendly - but then again - it is 'oop north' !. Durham itself has plenty of boutique fashion shops. Don't dawdle on the narrow pavements though - they seem to be full of students rushing from one place to another. Lots of choice of places to eat as well - this meant we never had dinner in the hotel though.

“Great location and friendly staff”

Four of us spent two nights at the hotel and we all thought it was excellent. Parking in the car park was no problem and the central location meant we could walk to the sites, restaurants, etc. We may have been upgraded as our room was large and comfortable but our friends were very happy with their smaller room on another floor. We had good breakfasts and an excellent evening meal in the restaurant. The friendly and helpful staff were outstanding - nothing was too much trouble. Hope to go back!

“A really good deal”

We booked an advance purchase deal through Expedia. Although our room was rather 'cosy' to say the least, the hotel was very nice and friendly. The staff were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant althought a little pricey was still good value for money and the food and service were excellent. The position was central to all the attractions of Durham but in a quiet street. Would really reccomend this hotel for a weekend break.

“Find place to stay”

We were visiting Durham University. It was a great location and a great hotel.

Area recommendations
This was a great central location.
Getting around
This is a walk everywhere kind of town. Bring good walking shoes as many of the streets are cobblestone and it is hilly

“Old Durham Town”

This hotel is right on the doorstep of the old centre of Durham City, across the road from the start of the pedestrianised centre, with all the historic attractions within easy walking distance. The Marriott deal on Expedia was good value, and our spacious room overlooked the River Wear. The package included very good meals, and the service was excellent. Staff in the hotel were invariably friendly and positive, and despite the cramped car park I had no bother parking each day.

Area recommendations
The Castle and Cathedral are must-sees, together with the narrow streets and bridges that radiate from the Market Place. Take a boat trip on the river (leaving from Elvet Bridge) and get a unique view of the City. Further out, try the Durham Dales to Stanhope from Bishop Auckland, and visit Barnard Castle and the incredible Bowes Museum. Newcastle is a short drive or train ride away, and don't miss the Quayside district with the Millenium Bridge, the Sage Centre and the Baltic Mill modern art gallery.

“Bland”

My wife and I stayed here for one night. We were not particularly impressed with the hotel. Our "deluxe" double room was cramped and the bathroom smelt musty. Drinks were over-priced and one order was incorrect. The breakfast was dry as it was kept warm for too long. The restaurant food was served luke warm.
