Hilton 5 Star Hotel... Everything you would expect....easy check in check out... Needs a more reasonably priced wine list in the bars and restaurant ... By South African Standards. Need to offer free parking to residents.. Or at least a one off daily charge...
THIS IS AN OLDER 150 YEAR OLD HOTEL THAT IS IN THE MIDDLE OF DOWNTOWN DURBAN. IT IS A WONDERFUL VALUE FOR THE MONEY. A LOT OF TOURISTS SEEM TO STAY IN THE NORTHERN SUBURBS OF DURBAN HOWEVER THEY ARE MISSING OUT ON THE VALUE OF THIS HOTEL BY STAYING DOWNTOWN. IT HAS A PARKING GARAGE ATTACHED BY A COVERED WALKWAY AT A COST OF AROUND 3.50 US DOLLARS A NIGHT. BREAKFAST IS SERVED IN THE HISTORIC DINING ROOM WHERE QUEEN ELIZABETH DINED IN 1999 OR 1999 AND THE BUFFET WAS EXCELLENT ( AND INCLUDED WITH THE ROOM RATE WE GOT).
THE ROOMS ARE CLEAN AND HAVE EVERYTHING YOU COULD WANT INCLUDING FREE INTERNET. IT IS RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM CITY HALL AND THE DOWNTOWN SHOPPING AREAS ARE ON THE SAME STREET AS THE HOTEL.
UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE ON THE BEACH DON'T OVERLOOK THIS HOTEL
Despite my original disappointment with their lack of tourism knowlege, the hotel was overall better than expected. I got a beachfront room with two beds (it was just me!), TV, lovely bathroom, safe, etc for a great price. Staff was friendly, food was good. Highly recommended.
"Clean, comfortable, welcoming and excellent food"
The hotel is situated in one of the more desirable areas of Durban just down the road from the Presidential Palace. The premises are secure, but it also has private security as an added measure.
The rooms are spacious and well furnished, the staff friendly and hospitable and the menu just excellent as is the food.
The head waiter, Jean Francois, is an excellent source of knowledge and advice to any tourist. His advice and general guidance was greatly appreciated over the following weeks of our stay.
This was the perfect start to our holiday in KZN and I highly recommended it to others. Needless to say, it is also excellent value for money.
Jean Francois appreciated real coffee and kindly obliged my request for fresh coffee to be brought to our room before breakfast.
I needed to be close to the Expo centre and the cricket ground so this was fairly close. The hotel was fine but the issues were: 1. There was not a proper door to the bathroom, just a curtain (the actual toilet had a door but not the rest of the bathroom).
2. There was no fridge or microwave in the room.
3. I walked around with barefeet for a bit in the room after showering and my partner advised my feet were very dirty afterwards (i.e. the cleanliness of the floor).
4. We could hear noise from other people in the hotel from outside our door.
The positive was that the bed was nice and big and comfortable and the linen was nice and clean. I wouldn't avoid the hotel as it was not bad.
It met our needs AND our expectations. The beds were fantastic, the view of the was gorgeous, the location couldn't have been better, the staff was overly quick to respond to our needs, the breakfast was phenomenal, and the size of the rooms were "just right!"
While the exterior of the building shows its age, the rooms were well equipped, and the lobby and restaurants were nicely decorated. Parking is secure, but a bit troublesome to get in and out of with a larger vehicle. Kobos (the porter) was a pleasure and truly went the extra mile to avail himself and ensure all our needs were met. The Front Desk staff was also helpful and cheerful.
Can't wait for another trip and stay at the BelAire

This hotel has retained the old world colonial charm with dark wood and marble floors. This hotel has character. The staff are friendly and are well informed as to good tourist destinations. We were warned not to venture very far from the hotel due to safety issues. Visitors should be aware that this hotel is situated in the CBD area on the sea front where the 'black' population live. There is a strong police presence on the sea front. Must have a guide to visit any tourist attractions in the CBD for safety.
