“Very good three star hotel”

A very good three star hotel in a great location. Hotel very clean and very helpful staff. Breakfast was fine, though nothing special. Bus 2 mins away for trip into Dubroknik, every 15 mins. We went end of October and lovely and quiet, and struck lucky with weather. Drink prices not cheap in hotel and shower in room poor, though would recommend this hotel and Dubrovnik, a stunning city. Very friendly people as well.

“Splendid Stay!”

I've heard lots of mixed reviews about this hotel. Please be assured for the price you pay you get a lot of bang for your buck! The reception staff are very friendly and the hotel is well laid out with its own private beach, bar, restaurant and rooms naturally. Most if not all rooms have a balcony with a fantastic sea view. The rooms are well maintained - maybe a little antiquated (old TV) but honestly why would I travel 1000+ miles to watch the same TV I do at home anyway?? There are also en suites in every room with huge wardrobe, a small mini bar, phone and plenty of lighting. Shutters are also installed. Dubrovnik itself is easily accessible by the number '4' Libertas bus into town and the bus stop is directly outside the hotel. The surroundings of the hotel and Dubrovnik are well worth the visit and excursions are readily available. In fact an excursion 'shop' is just a short walk from the hotel and offer VERY reasonable rates. In late October the weather was very good to us, although we did have one rainy day. Still, Dubrovnik in the rain lights up another whole load of sights. Very sad and yet fascinating that a war has occurred in my lifetime in Dubrovnik where strangely colour pictures of destruction can be found. Excellent repair has been made so far and continues on. I absolutely loved the hotel and Dubrovnik and would very much visit there again. The perfect winter sun get away. Stop reading: start booking.

Area recommendations
Mostar, Bosnia (Fantastic surroundings but DON'T give money to beggars - more will appear and hassle you) The Island tours (Unmissable) Cable Car (Excellent views and lovely restaurant) Dubrovnik Card (Well worth it - provides bus travel and museum entrances)
When to go
Late October provides hot sun and a all round nice temperature. Most locals are all scarfed up but you only really need a jumper in the evenings. Forget your coat.
Getting there
Shuttle Bus from Dubrovnik Airport and back. Costs 35 Kuna each and is very reasonable. Will take you to Dubrovnik Pile Gate and collection is from the bus stop outside the lower cable car. The bus arrives about 2 hours prior to a flight.
Shopping
Personally just top up on a large bottle of water. Food at restaurants is fantastic.
Dining
As you go into Dubrovnik old town from Pile Gate there is a restaurant on the left hand side - the first one you see. They have the best lasagne I have ever had.

“Best thing is location”

Hotel is fine. I had a single room reservation with "park" view. The park is just the back side of the hotel with green area. When I got there I asked for a seaview and they gave it for an extra ten euros a day. It was low season, and not all rooms were occupied, so I think they could have done the room without the extra cost. Desk people were friendly and helpful with bus schedule, tours, greetings. One night there was no hot water at night or the morning, and the only explanation was that some pump broke with so many people...something that should have been corrected that night, but it wasn't. Compensation was offered in a "capuccino or glass of wine". Location on the bus line was the best thing about the hotel, with sea in front, very quiet at night. Breakfast buffet was typical and adequate, nothing extraordinary. Overall, it was a fine place to stay. I hope they can get their hot water situation under control.

Area recommendations
Lapad beach area, near the sea, on the bus lines, quiet and away from Old Town but easy to get to Old Town.
When to go
End of October is beginning of low season, so some things are not available, like the ferry to one of the big islands. Weather was great for sightseeing, but too cold for water sports.
Must see
Old Town area, walk the wall. The Museum of Natural HIstory could be passed up.
Events and shows
Concerts in the churches. DO NOT spend money or time on the 3D show....not worth it.

“Nice Hotel But Don't Pick up the Phone!”

This hotel has an amazing view from your windows. French doors open to the Bay, and the private beach area, an excellent way to wake up, and a great way to end your day. The room was very clean, small, but comfortable. The surprise came when we checked out... While in Dubrovnik, my debit card account had been compromised. M y bank gave me a number to dial so I could call them collect. I asked the front desk how I could do that, and they just told me to use the phone in my room. I could not get the call to go through the way they told me to, so one of the staff came and placed the call. Counting hold time, I was on the phone for 20 minutes. When we checked out, they made me pay the U.S equivalent of $40 for that call. THEY WOULD NOT BEND. I assume a call from a pay phone would have been free. This hotel should have told me what the charges would be in advance, since they knew the situation and told me to place the call. For that reason, I would not suggest you stay here. It seems dishonest to me, and shows no regard for customer satisfaction.

Area recommendations
Any area that is on the bus route is fine. It took us about 10 minutes to get to the Old Town from this location. It would have been nice to be closer to Old Town, but I understand there is only one hotel directly in Old Town.

“Very friendly staff”

We were very pleased with our stay at the Hotel Speldid - the staff were very friendly, helpful & courteous and all Reception and Catering staff spoke tomus in ever good English - this was very welcome! We had a lovely view from our Sea-side bedroom so were able to relax on our balcony & enjoy it. The bus service to the Old City was great - every 20 mins from right outside the hotel - as good as a taxi! .

Area recommendations
We made several trips into the Old City which is really beautiful and our main reason for choosing to go to Dubrovnik. The walk round the City Walls was amazing. The Squares & Old Port are lively and interesting. We enjoyed several very good meals and at other timews had good meals arounf Lapad Beach which is where we were staying - our favourite place was the Atlantic - small, friendly and very reasonable.
When to go
We went end September/early October and the weather was just right for us - about 26 degrees, not stifling, the sea was still warm and the evenings were lovely, we had short sleeves-wear when eating eating ouside at night. The taxi-driver told us May is like this too ( although obviously the sea would'nt be as warm.
Must see
The Cable-car trip, giving such wonderful views over the Old City was fantastic.

“impressed with service”

I was impressed with the staff at the hotel who were friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. Rooms were clean, breakfast okay, standard fare. Unfortunately there was no lift and there were steps down to hotel although could take a longer route down the drive which might be an issue with those who are less moble. Hotel balcony had views of the sea. Rocky bathing area, no swimming pool. It is close to a bus stop to take a regular bus into town which took about 20 minutes. Overall I would recommend for a quiet location and good service.

Area recommendations
Old town of Dubrovnik obviously - wonderful historic city, magical by night.
Must see
Walk the city walls, take guided walking tour, go up cable car for excellent views. Island of Lokrum for tranquility.

“Remember it's a 3 star hotel...”

Although we enjoyed our stay here I would warn other travelers to be prepared for a few things. The breakfast buffet is very disappointing, especially if you are there for a week as we were. Also, the beach is a public beach. Every day after school it filled with squealing preteens playing ball games. Not very relaxing. The tennis court opens earlier than we thought was appropriate as well. On the up side, the staff are very courteous, they all spoke English, the bus stop is directly across from the hotel, & there is lots to do right on the Lapad Peninsula where the hotel is located. The patio is also a great spot to watch the sunset from!

Area recommendations
I'd recommend Lapad as it was away from the tourist area of town but still convenient for the sights.
Dining
Restaurant Dubrovnik was superb! Book in advance though as they do fill up. Best pizza in town is Oliva Pizza. Lots of locals & friendly service along with great, thin & crispy crust.

“Exceeded Expectations”

We had a great stay at Hotel Splendid. The staff were very friendly and so helpful, the setting was incredibly beautiful and so peaceful and the room was clean and comfortable. The view from our balcony was exquisite and we saw the most incredible sunset one evening from the hotel beach, which is a peaceful place to relax in the sun during the day. We enjoyed the free breakfast buffet each morning. Hotel Splendid, for a 3 star hotel, offers very good value for money. Don't be put off by the communist era building, as the mountains, sea, trees and gardens more than make up for this!

Area recommendations
Lapad is great if you want to combine a relaxing beach holiday with easy access to all Dubrovnik Old Town has to offer. There are also companies offering day trips to Korcula island (which we did and would recommend), Ston, Mostar and Montenegro. The company we went to Korcula and Ston with were great, the guides were so friendly. I wish I could remember the name of the company, but they have an office in Lapad. If you go down to the pedestrianised street with the bars and turn right onto said street, the office is on your left after 50m or so.
When to go
We were there in April, just before the tourist season started, which suited us because it was so peaceful. However, some tours weren't running yet, a couple of museums weren't open and not all of the restaurants were either. Also, the water wasn't quite warm enough to swim in yet! Several locals told us that the best times to come are May, June or September.
Getting there
It costs around 350 Kuna to get a taxi from the airport to Dubrovnik. Much cheaper is to get the bus, at 35 Kuna. The bus is run by a company called Atlas and leaves from right outside the tiny airport - you can't miss it. It is timed to leave with the arrival of the flights, and if your flight it late it'll wait. The bus stops at the Pile Gate and also at the main bus station. I'd recommend getting off at the Pile Gate, then crossing the road and getting the number 4 bus to the hotel. The number 4 stops right after the Hotel Splendid, at the top of the hill - you'll see the yellow sign for the hotel on your right. There's only one more stop after the one for Hotel Splendid, so even if you missed it you wouldn't have far to walk back. Getting the bus back to the airport is slightly trickier - for one thing it doesn't stop at the Pile Gate on the way back. Ask at the hotel reception when you're getting ready to leave and they'll help you out with this one! I'd maybe recommend getting a taxi to the bus station on the way back, as walking there with all your luggage is no mean feat (I know, because that is what we did!) The buses to the airport are timed to leave the main bus station 2 hours before the flight departure times, which gives you more than enough time as the airport is so small.
Getting around
It's just a short (5 minutes) walk to the bars and restaurants of Lapad and a 15 minute bus ride to Dubrovnik Old Town. The bus picks up and drops off right outside the hotel, is frequent and punctual and, at 10 Kuna, a good price.
What to pack
Swimming suit, beach towel, comfy shoes for walking around Dubrovnik Old Town, camera to record all the stunning views, and shorts with an elasticated waist band to accommodate all the cheap and delicious pizza, pasta, ice cream, beer and wine you will consume!
Must see
Dubrovnik is a stunning place with so much to offer, so allow plenty of time for just wandering around and exploring all the alleys. We climbed a lot of steps, thus earning all the food we ate! The one thing I'd say is a must do in Dubrovnik is a walk round the city walls. We did it on the first morning there, which was great because it helped to orientate us with the city. It costs around 70 kuna, which seems fairly steep, but is completely worth it!
