Pleasant location for hotel outside of Dublin city

Posted 02-Oct-2014
Pros: The Hotel was extremely comfortable, busy, vibrant and cheerful lounges and bar. Good choice of food options. AirCoach pick up point for Airport.
Cons: Reduce the size of the pillows on double/ queen beds as the are longer than standard size and hang over the side of the bed.
Location: Dun Laoghaire is a sailing/marine suburb outside of Dublin City but within easy reach of Dublin and elsewhere by Dart and buses.
After 38 years absence I visited Ireland where I was born. My two daughters and I spent some time touring the country on a CIE tour, a few days in a Dublin city hotel and prior to departing for home in Sydney Australia stayed at the Royal Marine hotel. We were delighted with our room and in particular the bathroom which had a separate shower not one over the bathtub. It was a perfect base for walking or taking the Dart transport to other places of interest on the south coast of Dublin - Dalkey or Bray for example. The Dundrum shopping centre is a short bus or taxi ride away which had 120 shops including a Jamie Oliver's restaurant. Dun Laoghaire has it's own shopping area which includes a cinema and after a walk on the East Pier you earn an icecream from Scrumdidilly a nearby icecream shop or from the kiosk on the pier itself.

One of our favourite places to stay.

Posted 17-Sep-2014
Pros: It's old-world charm - afternoon tea and piano in the lounge mixed with modern convenience. Staff are lovely - one waiter remembers us year-to-year.
Cons: Breakfast is not great so we book without it. Some of the rooms are dark and overlooked - the old rooms are best. Food service ends at 10pm - early
Location: Dublin/Howth in one direction, Bray and Wicklow in the other - all by Dart along the coast. Good restaurants. Lexicon and Pavillion Theatre. Sea.
We always stay at the Royal Marine when we are down in Dun Laoghaire for the Mountains to Sea and Poetry Now Festivals - presently in September and next year in March. We have learned to book early since it is popular that it books up quickly. I love the grandness of it and its position overlooking the harbour and the sea. It is incredibly convenient - we come from Belfast, take the Dublin Port Tunnel and then travel along the coast to Dun Laoghaire. If I'm going down on my own I take the train to Connolly and then the Dart out and it is easy and safe. The borough itself - Dun Laoghaire Rathdown is great supporter of the arts so you feel that you are at home when you arrive. The hotel is within minutes from the Pavillion Theatre and now the beautiful new Lexicon Library which has also opened the hotel up again to the front. When new flats enroached on its gardens years ago it was sad but it seems somehow restored to grandeur now between the modern buildings. As well as the wonderful Victorian pier there are also beautiful walks to Sandycove, Joyce's Tower, The Forty-Foot bathing place and so on and a selection of lovely restaurants on 'the metals' - the area on the front of the coast - so called because of the old metal tracks used to bring building materials into the town. There are also some great shops including Meadow and Byrnes and a very good children's section in Easons minutes from the hotel.
