“Not impressed”

Only hotel room I could find thanks to Obama's quest for his Guinness roots. It's very hard to find - the Abbey Hotel sign has disappeared, and now it has a Bar Name instead - it's just a doorway with the name on the door. Cheap and convenient, but not really what I was hoping for. Very dirty neighborhood. Room was clean. Wifi in the bar next door (part of the hotel). Problems finding my Expedia reservation, but eventually did.

Dining
One Pico - excellent restaurant.

“Great little hotel”

Everyone at this hotel was great to us. You can't beat the location, it's close to almost everything. Price was great, except St. Patrick's day night, which is to be expected. The food downstairs was good, and very reasonably priced. Our receptionist, Silvana was a gem! Jimmy, Ben, and Michael in the bar were fantastic as well! Very helpful and friendly. We look forward to going back someday!

“Cozy hotel Close to everything!”

Great location, rates and hospitality! Perfect place to see Dublin inexpensively. Not far from O'Connell St and other transportation just a short walk. This was my 2nd visit and look forward to staying there again.

“Not impressed”

We didn't even stop. Once we found the hotel and saw the surronding neighborhood we stayed in the car, kept the doors locked and just kept driving.

“Perfectly adequate.”

I booked a double room for single use and was initially given a very pleasant room with a double bed plus table and easy chair. It was, however, very noisy from an extractor at the rear of the central area of the hotel. I requested a change and was given a room with a double and also a single bed. Much quieter. Not a great outlook and rather smoky smelling from adjoining rooms but perfectly comfortable and adequate for my needs. The bathroom needed some updating but again was all in working order. Breakfast was OK, if somewhat pricy but that was the case in the whole of Dublin. Being alone I did not have any particular worries about the neighbourhood although many of the shops were slightly scruffy or boarded up. But it was so easy to get into the shopping area and across the river to the Temple Bar so was excellent in that respect. All in all a comfortable stay.

“You get what you pay for.”

You cannot beat the hotel's location in the city. It is very close to everything in Dublin. The hotel is very run down, although it was kept clean. If you do not plan on spending a lot of time in your room, and you just want a place to sleep and shower, then I strongly recommend this hotel.

Area recommendations
It is hard to pick a specific neighborhood because I liked the entire city. But I strongly recommend visiting the Trinity College and Killmainham Gaol.

“Great location. Kinda noisy.”

Expect to be able to hear the bass from the clubs at the street level on the weekend. The actual hotel and rooms are nice enough given the price level. The location is what makes this place - close to Temple Bar.

“Great Stay!”

We stayed at this hotel because it was, at the time, the most affordable hotel that was centrally located and offered a full breakfast! We were right next to alot of the shops and fun places to hit up - everything you would really want to do was within 2-3 minute walk down O'Connell Street. The hotel is small, and if you walk past it, and didnt look close enough, you would probably miss it. The staff was always very friendly, and they lock the front entrance at night. When you come in, they check your name on the list to make sure you are registered at the hotel - which made me feel safe. The breakfast was great - and it was made quicker then any breakfast I had ever had. We would go up and get our drinks, and the woman would come out, ask how we wanted our eggs, and 2 minutes after we sat down - we had a wonderfully hot FULL Irish Breakfast that I couldn't complain about one bit. As far as appearance, everything was pretty neat and clean, although one floor had paint peeling all off the walls (it looked as if they were preparing to work on it). Our room was always spotless from the cleaning staff, and they even organized our books, food and toiletries. When I come back and stay again in Dublin, and believe me I will, the Abbey Hotel will be at the top of my list when looking into places to stay!

Traveller's tip
Most pubs, restaurants and shops accept credit (Mastercard and Visa - SOME take AMEX). Bring as little cash as possible and charge things - you'll get the most up-to-date exchange rate on your card, and if you need cash - hit the ATM.

“Hotel abey Dublin”
