I stayed on 7 good quality hotels over two weeks and this was by far the best.
It is in a part of Rio described as bohemian and though being redeveloped is still quite run-down, with a few seedy-looking bars, making me (travelling alone) feel unsafe to go out after dark. However you can tell the area of Lapa is the next best thing as a location which is why the hotel owners decided to convert a beautiful colonial palace into a comfortable boutique hotel.
It is a surprise once you're through the door of this hotel with a great pool, helpful staff with good English, a very good restaurant and the best breakfast buffet I had.
A further word about the area: Lapa is the trendiest place for young people to meet friends in the evening and providing you're not a single female traveller is a great place to be based.
Very impressed by the helpful staff who were very cooperative in accommodading an early arrival and late departure.
Facilities modern and clean, a really good complimentary breakfast and a good evening meal contributed to an experience that exceeded our expectations based on previous reviews.

The hotel is located in Centro closed to the bay and only 20min away from GIG. Checking-in was smooth and pleasant, and one lady at the reception spoke good English and helped to purchase the tickets to Corcovado.
The problem is that almost all the staff at the reception do not speak any English. So even some of them are friendly and willing to help, they simply can't.
The room is comfortable and in good size.
Overall good value for money. Friendly staff. Good location in proximity to main attractions and areas of interest. Easy access by public transportation. Extra charge for the Internet use and safe rental.
The area gets a bit noisy in the morning and day time. On the contrary, it has a very low pedestrian traffic at dark. Beware of your surroundings!

Lovely hotel, great quality- surprised by the room quality. Staff were lovely and very helpful- spoke very little English, but that was our issue, not theirs! A lot of building work going on in the hotel which probably accounts for reasonable rates- we weren't generally disturbed by this, however did have to move rooms due to a leak! Great breakfast buffet selection. Good location- easy to get around. Really enjoyed our stay.
Do not arrive before 3 as they do not have rooms ready. Facilities are old but work, don't wait for the elevator to take you down, just walk down the steps.
Easy to find buses any time of the night to Central or Centro, close by. Easy access to key places. Just 300 meter's away from City airport and yet in downtown.
Excellent breakfast included in the room rate, good and clean and reasonably priced restaurant. Avccess to Wi-fi
Pocket Guide: Rio de Janeiro Downtown - Santos Dumont Airport Hotels
Glass-and-steel towers soar above domed colonial churches. Trade thrives here, especially along Avenida Rio Branco, a commercial street that resembles the Champs-Elysées. Rio’s French influence is also seen at Praça Floriano’s opera house and sidewalk cafés. The Sambódromo, at downtown’s edge, comes to life during Carnaval. Nearby, travelers fly to domestic cities from Santos Dumont Airport.
