I stayed on 7 good quality hotels over two weeks and this was by far the best.
It is in a part of Rio described as bohemian and though being redeveloped is still quite run-down, with a few seedy-looking bars, making me (travelling alone) feel unsafe to go out after dark. However you can tell the area of Lapa is the next best thing as a location which is why the hotel owners decided to convert a beautiful colonial palace into a comfortable boutique hotel.
It is a surprise once you're through the door of this hotel with a great pool, helpful staff with good English, a very good restaurant and the best breakfast buffet I had.
A further word about the area: Lapa is the trendiest place for young people to meet friends in the evening and providing you're not a single female traveller is a great place to be based.
The hotel is located in Centro closed to the bay and only 20min away from GIG. Checking-in was smooth and pleasant, and one lady at the reception spoke good English and helped to purchase the tickets to Corcovado.
The problem is that almost all the staff at the reception do not speak any English. So even some of them are friendly and willing to help, they simply can't.
The room is comfortable and in good size.
Very nice experience at this hotel. The room was comfortable, breakfast was great and the location of the hotel was perfect if you intend to do shopping and move around a lot. It is also very close to the airport which is great if you have an early morning flight.
Reliable wifi internet, we ate two desserts in the restaurant which were nice and a good size. Breakfast was good - the usual fruits, pastries, cheeses, meats, pastries, eggs, sausages, etc. Comfortable bed and quieter air conditioning than most places.
The hotel is downtown I have stayed in this hotel before. The hotel is close to public transit and close to many places to eat. You are downtown so a little noise and lots of traffic. The weekend are pretty dead downtown not much going on. Lapa is not a far walk as a museum or two are also nearby.
Overall good value for money. Friendly staff. Good location in proximity to main attractions and areas of interest. Easy access by public transportation. Extra charge for the Internet use and safe rental.
The area gets a bit noisy in the morning and day time. On the contrary, it has a very low pedestrian traffic at dark. Beware of your surroundings!
Rio's Presidente Hotel is located in the cultural corridor of the Cidade Maravilhosa, a few minutes from the airports and …More
Nice hotel in Rio, Centro. Shops nearby and buses going to Copacabana, etc. Food in restaurant was decent, but I didn't understand the breakfast (maybe a Brazilian thing). Rooms are very clean and tidy. Staff very helpful, and a problem I had with wifi was solved very quickly. Nobody speaks English, which didn't bother me too much as I can speak Spanish and they were happy to communicate with me in Spanish. Overall I was very happy I chose this hotel and I would stay here again. The only downside to the hotel was the exchange rate, which was @ 3.40R to £1. Normally its around 4.70R to £1. DO NOT EXCHANGE MONEY AT HOTEL.
Pocket Guide: Rio de Janeiro Downtown - Santos Dumont Airport Hotels
Glass-and-steel towers soar above domed colonial churches. Trade thrives here, especially along Avenida Rio Branco, a commercial street that resembles the Champs-Elysées. Rio’s French influence is also seen at Praça Floriano’s opera house and sidewalk cafés. The Sambódromo, at downtown’s edge, comes to life during Carnaval. Nearby, travelers fly to domestic cities from Santos Dumont Airport.
