“Glad to have found the Wessex”
The hotel has plenty to offer by way of two heated swimming pools - inside and out - a full sized snooker table and friendly staff. Our room was large even with the extra bed for our granddaughter and the bathroom was also large with bath and shower. Breakfasts had a good variety as did the dinner menu although there are a number of alternative restaurants within easy reach. Access to the sea is through a short pathway opposite the hotel. Our only slight criticism was the condition of the carpet in one of the dining room annexes - but it certainly would not stop us staying here on another visit to Bournemouth.
“Clean and friendly, but some rooms rather dated”
I was favourably impressed by the neighbourhood, and ground floor of this hotel, which is close to the seafront. Taking the lift to the first floor, took us back to the 1980s. The room was comfortable, but the decor was extremely dated and dowdy. I believe there is a newer wing, and I expect the rooms there are much nicer. The buffet breakfast was good, and the staff were helpful. There was a free car park. If I stayed there again, I would want a room in the new wing.
“would stay again”
I only stayed for 1 night and didnt check in until about 10pm, the check in was totally painless, very quick, efficient and friendly. The room, a single, was quite small and a bit dated with old fashioned furniture. The bed was comfortable (most important to me!) but a winter weight duvet during a mini heatwave was too hot even with the windows open. I didn't have breakfast so can't comment on it. The hotel is situated near the town centre but this does mean that even though its conveniently located it can be a bit noisy with the traffic and passing pedestrians. I would stay again but only if the price is right!!
“Great location, Great hotel but a little dated”
Excellent location about 10 minutes walk from the pier and town centre. Breakfast was nice for a buffet as some can be pretty vile and the rooms were comfortable and you can be guaranteed a decent nights sleep. Only downfall is that all the floorboards creek and it is a little dated could do with a lick of paint and some new carpet and curtains. Apart from that would definitely stay again.
“Excellent Breakfast”
One night, Wessex Hotel, West Cliff, Bournmouth, October 2009. Although an older building, the public areas have been refurbished and are welcoming. Our room was dated, past its best but the furnishings were ok and clean, especially the bed, which had very nice linen and a large canopy. It would have been a good idea to bin the desk which was in there but otherwise it was adequate and large. Due to the age of the building, it would be hard to know where to begin to modernise hallways and rooms but we were more than prepared to over look this as the situation was good - a short walk to the cliff top and a stroll down to the beach and pier area. Excellent free parking which was extended to midnight on the day of checkout. You could access your room from 2pm and out by 11am, (with a store your luggage room available after checkout) which are better than many more modern chain hotels. The pool was lovely, smallish but circular so you could swim in a circle for hours! Not crowded either and free use of a well equipped gym. Breakfast was excellent with a wide selection. Overall, we found it good value for money but if your priority is modern bedrooms, you wont find them here but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the staff were friendly and helpful.
“not too bad overall”
stayed 1 night going to show in BIC - 10min walk Clean and tidy basic room. Bar very expensive Reasonable breakfast - good choice and plenty of it. Would return
“Would recommend with reservations”
Although the hotel entrance and reception was modern, the rooms and furniture were old and tired. Overall cleanliness was acceptable and ideal for a short stay. The staff were disorganised and there were multiple errors on my bill, one of which was not realised until I can home. This, however was dealt with after a couple of phone calls. Would use it again but would be double checking the final bill!
“Wessex in Jan”
Hotel rooms and surrounding corridors appear very dated but the reception staff were very helpful Breakfast was ok but the fried eggs are like rubber.
