Spent 3 days at this hotel. Our experience was not great, Meals in the courtyard were pleasant with the friendly, helpful serving staff. Reception however, was very unfriendly and upon our departure assessed a Tanzania Development Levy of Tsh 3300 pp per day, which no other hotel in Tanzania charged.
On arrival, we were given a very small room where the 1st night the AC broke and leaked over my clothes. No apology from hotel, but I was given a bigger room, which I should have had in the first place. Being across the street from the train station, we were also disturbed by the occasional train horns during the night. The hotel allows touts into the courtyard, who pester guests to buy their wares. There were stray cats allowed to roam freely through the property. The upkeep of the facility needs immediate attention, apart from run down hotel, the pond area was dirty and the gardens overgrown!
Overall the hotel has good potential and could be significantly improved with a (major) renovation. The lobby is dark and dismal with very dated furnishings. The three restaurants are dark but do serve tasty food. The courtyard needs to be spruced up - shrubs pruned, (smaller) pool cleaned, the bar repaired and reopened. The floorboards around the second floor walkways to get to the rooms are in need of repair and should be re-stained.
