Best hotel in Exeter city centre and with spa!

Posted 01-Nov-2014
Pros: Very good leisure club, with swimming pool, jacuzzi spa, sauna and gym. Nice rooms, great location within walking distance of shops, etc.
Cons: Food prices are steep, I paid around £12 for a club sandwich and room service costs an additional "tray charge" of £5 which is too much.
Location: Just a few minutes stroll away from the lovely Exeter cathedral, excellent shopping centres, restaurants, train station, buses and local services
I always stay at The Southgate when in Exeter and it's got better over the years, I first stayed in the hotel over ten years ago. As far as I know, it's the only hotel with leisure facilities in the city centre, indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym. Rooms here are very comfortable and well equipped, but a lot of the ground floor rooms back onto the carpark outside and you can here people's outside and car doors, so I would advise to get a room on another floor. The hotel bar is open 24 hours to guests (depending on how busy it is) and service is excellent, really good cocktail menu and bar staff are really friendly. One downside is that food in the hotel is very expensive, that's one thing to be wary of, but the city centre shops are all within easy walking distance, as are plenty of good restaurants and pubs. The train station is walking distance, as are local bus services. This time I stayed in the hotel because I was attending a rock concert at the Great Hall in the university campus and a bus took me straight there for just £2 return, so I never needed to pay more for a taxi. The Southgate is highly recommended, I would never stay anywhere else in Exeter.

Considerate Upgrade

Posted 26-Oct-2014
Pros: Location, staff friendliness
Cons: Some prices are too high, £10 for a large G&T, ouch!
Location: In Cathedral area, lots of history, restaurants and shopping in 5mins walk
Stayed there with wife and two young children. Requested upgrade if possible when booking. Excellent complimentary upgrade to a suite with lots of room for the family. Good pool and spa.

Nice hotel, right in Exeter town centre.

Posted 07-Oct-2014
Pros: All of the above
Cons: Bar could be open later, closes at 1am.
Location: Exeter town centre. Perfect for bars, restaurants and more, including the Pheonix, where we were going to see 'The South'
Easy check in. Polite and efficient staff. Well equipped and comfortable rooms. Brilliant location.

Renovate the bathrooms!

Posted 01-Sep-2014
The Southgate is in a brilliant location, in beautiful Southernhay with it's lovely Georgian terraces, close to the Catherdral Close but this hotel really doesn't fulfil it's potential. The rooms are alright but the bathrooms are tired and in desperate need of renovation, decidely stuck in the 80s. Our latest stay was in a room with can extractor fan that didn't seem to turn off and the bathroom ceiling around the fan was stained from a previous leak. The breakfast isn't worth it when you can stroll round the corner and get something much tastier and less expensive in Carluccio's. My pet gripe with hotel though is having to pay for car parking, that annoys me!

The hotel was adequate, but no more. The rooms were a bit tired, especially the bathroom, but the staff were helpful and pleasant.

Dear Gary Sorry to hear the corridors were not clear on your arrival and you experienced a delay in checking in. we guarantee rooms will be available at 14:00 hours , however we do let guests check in earlier if the rooms are available but sometime this does mean that there will be some linen in trolleys in the corridors. Unfortunately we have to cope with power outage on occasion but it was a city issue rather than a localised problem. We hope to welcome you back Kind regards Fiona Darde

Tired and Average

Posted 25-Aug-2014 on Hotels.com
The room was a bit tired in need of updating particularly the bathroom. Breakfast was good and service was excellent.Gym was the best hotel gym I've been too in the area, pool looked great although didn't try this.Reception service was poor was told one price for breakfast and charged another. Had problem with room but was sorted efficiently.Overall a very tired 4 star hotel not worth the extra money if you can live without the pool and gym, there are deifintely better value hotels in the area. I'm regularly in Exeter on business but won't be returning at the prices they charge.
