one night to meet friends from bournemouth

Posted 12-Dec-2014
Pros: the central position for shopping etc.
Cons: would be lovely if having paid that sort of money for one night the parking was a huge £10!
Location: Everything is nearby and the visit to The Cathedral was wonderful
We were pleasantly surprised, but felt pensive re the necessity to leave the car park next morning on time. We enjoyed our shopping, the bar food etc was excellent. Evening meal was really good except for the fact that two meals were almost cold! They did remove them to heat up, but they came back the same, all the same we ate it all.

Perfect for a Christmas shopping trip.

Posted 01-Dec-2014
Pros: The dining room is large but very stylish and perfect for a romantic meal. Breakfast is good value. On-site parking makes life easier.
Location: Close to the catheral in an historic part of the town and the high street shops are a short walk through the cathredral grounds.
We stayed at the Mercure during a Christmas shopping trip. It's a few minutes walk to the shops in a smart part of the town. Easily the nicest hotel in Exeter and the staff live up to its reputation.

Best hotel in Exeter city centre and with spa!

Posted 01-Nov-2014
Pros: Very good leisure club, with swimming pool, jacuzzi spa, sauna and gym. Nice rooms, great location within walking distance of shops, etc.
Cons: Food prices are steep, I paid around £12 for a club sandwich and room service costs an additional "tray charge" of £5 which is too much.
Location: Just a few minutes stroll away from the lovely Exeter cathedral, excellent shopping centres, restaurants, train station, buses and local services
I always stay at The Southgate when in Exeter and it's got better over the years, I first stayed in the hotel over ten years ago. As far as I know, it's the only hotel with leisure facilities in the city centre, indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym. Rooms here are very comfortable and well equipped, but a lot of the ground floor rooms back onto the carpark outside and you can here people's outside and car doors, so I would advise to get a room on another floor. The hotel bar is open 24 hours to guests (depending on how busy it is) and service is excellent, really good cocktail menu and bar staff are really friendly. One downside is that food in the hotel is very expensive, that's one thing to be wary of, but the city centre shops are all within easy walking distance, as are plenty of good restaurants and pubs. The train station is walking distance, as are local bus services. This time I stayed in the hotel because I was attending a rock concert at the Great Hall in the university campus and a bus took me straight there for just £2 return, so I never needed to pay more for a taxi. The Southgate is highly recommended, I would never stay anywhere else in Exeter.

Considerate Upgrade

Posted 26-Oct-2014
Pros: Location, staff friendliness
Cons: Some prices are too high, £10 for a large G&T, ouch!
Location: In Cathedral area, lots of history, restaurants and shopping in 5mins walk
Stayed there with wife and two young children. Requested upgrade if possible when booking. Excellent complimentary upgrade to a suite with lots of room for the family. Good pool and spa.

Nice hotel, right in Exeter town centre.

Posted 07-Oct-2014
Pros: All of the above
Cons: Bar could be open later, closes at 1am.
Location: Exeter town centre. Perfect for bars, restaurants and more, including the Pheonix, where we were going to see 'The South'
Easy check in. Polite and efficient staff. Well equipped and comfortable rooms. Brilliant location.

Very comfortable hotel, room and nice spa. Good service when we arrived and had a short wait for our room. Great location for being in the city, but still very quiet and comfortable throughout.
