“Can't wait to go back”
I love this Hotel. Very nice rooms and very attractive overall service in this one.
“Staff extraordinarily helpfu”
fabulous location.
“Abode Exeter”
My room was quite cold and I had the usual struggle with cases up and down narrow stairs and through stiff fire doors. for the first time I ate in Michael Caines' restaurant and I have to say it was fabulous. I chose from the £20 set menu and each course was deliciuos and served very well. Nice touches all round.
“Very Nice!”
Well, this was nicer than the average hotel i experience anyway! A very pleasantly decorated and kitted out room, if with a couple of issues when we first went in, first rate service provided by the excellent, courteous and friendly staff along with a location that surely can't be bettered in the city all added up to a splendid stay and one i could highly recommend.
“Exeter's One Way System from Hell”
If you get lost looking for this hotel (not difficult given Exeter's one way system) do not ask for the Abode Hotel - everyone knows it as the Royal Clarence (which is also the name on large letters on the front of the hotel). When we had huge difficulty with the one way system we telephoned the hotel but got no reply. When we finally found it, the excuse given was that the receptionist was on her own and helping out elsewhere in the hotel. The room we chose was the most basic (called "Comfortable") as we were only passing through Exeter. It was extremely small, but clean and with a large modern bathroom. As we stayed on a Sunday night the Michael Caine restaurant was closed and we opted for the hotel's cafe instead. The £10 fixed menu provided us with the smallest potions I have ever seen served up by a restaurant. After complaining they gave us double helpings for the dessert. We stayed at this hotel many years ago for our daughter's graduation and had a large comfortable room overlooking the cathedral. I would recommend this hotel provided (a) you choose a large room, (b) you don't arrive on a Sunday and (c) you equip yourself with a good map. (Even our sat nav was defeated by the one way system).
“A very dissapointing stay”
We booked a one night stay for a special break and were very disappointed. Please be very careful about booking a Saturday night here. If you do, ask not to be in the wing above the function rooms which are (and were during our stay) used for weddings which go into the early hours. We called reception 5 times during two hours and were assured we would receive a call back from the duty manager. This came 2.5 hours later when the music had stopped. We were on the third floor and the music was so loud we could have sung along to the entire set. On checkout we were very upset and were told that the hotel manager would call us that evening at home, but that courtesy never happened either. Again, very disappointing. It could have been a good stay, but we only left with negative feelings.
