“Olde Worlde Charm”
This hotel is a little run down around the edges but it doesn't really matter because it is in such a great position for walking into Buxton town centre, 2 minutes, and easy access to fantastic walking up on the moors. The bedrooms and bathrooms are clean and comfortable. The impressive staircase and spacious public areas hark back to the former glory days of this hotel and its history is on show in photographs and newspaper articles on the hotel walls. Don't expect too much of the spa and pool - very run down and cramped but we did meet some interesting tug of war teams in there!
“Don't Bother”
double bed in a single room bed agaimst the wall, desk and chair pushe in a corner , Shower wouldn't get you wet if it ran all day,
“Look for an alternative!”
Although great people working at this Hotel, it requires multimillion dollar update and rehabilitation! be aware if there is function at the hotel with music, you will hear it in your room!
“A Real Palace”
A beautiful hotel, well located in Buxton. The room was wonderful- very large, including a HUGE bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. I highly recommend it if you are spending time in the Peak District.
“A lovely overnight stay”
We have stayed at this hotel many years ago and the room was a bit dated and tatty. However, we needed to stay overnight in the area and this was the only place I could fine. I was a bit apprehensive after reading the reviews on line but thought it would be ok for the night. We were very pleasantly surprised. We had a huge family room which had been redocorated, it was clean and comfortable and with fantastic views. The hotel is very grand with chandeliers and sweeping staircases. You do need to bear in mind that it is almost 150 years old and so can be excused the odd crack in the walls etc. Only criticism was breakfast, we arrived three quarters of an hour before the end of breakfast and were disappointed that they had ran out of quite a lot of items. But all in all a lovely stay.
“Old, Tired and Tatty”
This hotel is in a great location and has brilliant views. That is the end of the positives. Despite being a historic building the decor is very old tired and shabby. The room was a good size and they had tried to tart it up with cushions and bed runners, but you cannot hide old worn furniture and a bathroom out the 1950's. The TV had only four stations and the wiring was so old the plugs were three pin round, so nowhere to plug in normal mobile phone charger. We had been upgraded to a premium room, so we got a trouser press, I would hate to have seen a standard room! The public areas are just as bad, I particularly liked the gaffer tape used to cover a hole in the carpet. The staff were very pleasant but there were terrible queues both to check in and check out. We were told they were refurbishing and had started on the third floor but we saw no signs at all. It is a real shame this historic hotel has turned into such a dump. Four star prices but no star quality.
“Indifferent Staff”
We needed a room only basis for one night and due to the carnival taking place the same weekend we got the last room at the Palace. I stayed there over 20 years ago when it was beautiful. The room to be fair was clean though the bath had many dark hairs lingering which is always a turn off. The beds were very comfortable. The public areas are tired in places but it is still a beautiful building. Its not great value to be honest. My greatest criticism was the reception which was rather indifferent and purely functional. I did not feel valued or really that welcome! Lack of competition has made them complacent. I think though that when the new revamped Spa Baths open in 2012 they will need some urgent retraining on 'customer delight' or they may find themselves without jobs!
“Extras made this 'bargain' expensive”
We were able to get a really good rate for the 1 night we wanted, and found it very easily. We were treated with courtesy at check in, but were suprised that we were going to be charged £4.50 for parking. The room was very large as we were given a family room, however a little chilly and there was no hot water in the bath taps to be able to have a bath. Breakfast was OK, had better, but definitely not the worst I've had. Glad it was included in the price as that was another expensive extra. When it came to check in we were suprised that we were charged £4 for room service which wasn't mentioned in the small print. However I wouldn't dicourage people from trying it, it was a nice trip, we just wish we'd been warned of the extras.
“shabby”
many other better places very poor value for money
“Jaded Grandeur!”
This hotel has a grand feel but has seen better days. It is definitely not a four star hotel. The decor in the bedroom and bathroom was very dated. However, the bed linens and curtains were modern so that helped. The building itself is in need of maintenance and decorators are obviously working in the hotel. The location is convenient to central Buxton - within walking distance of the lovely gardens and a small shopping centre. If I was visiting this region again I would stay in Bakewell which is a much prettier town with more life about it.
