Kuching was a delightful break from the full-on urbanised totality of Singapore.
Our only complaint was that the Japanese meal at the hotel was far to expensive and was not of a high standard for a Japanese meal.
Advice Dont stay in for the meal. But the hotel was great.
Nearby banks, waterfront, mall, kopitiam, main bazaar by walk. Awesome experience with good hospitality and very helpful staff of the hotel. Nice view from 5th floor lounge for the sunset. The signature dish of lime cheese cake is a must try! And local cuisine of laksa sarawak too..

I booked a standard suite and was given a room on level 2 facing the river as well as the main road. The room is spacious and clean. When I first checked in, the air-con didn't quite work because after almost half an hour, it still didn't cool the room so I asked for help at the front desk. The situation was rectified immediately and efficiently.
There is a colonial and resort feel to the entire environment, which makes it a perfect place for relaxation. The food at the restaurant was good. I had breakfast daily at the restaurant and there was a small but good selection in the breakfast menu. You get about six choices, including both local and western dishes.
The bathroom was excellent and I really enjoyed the amenities provided, even though I didn't use everything. I thought there were many thoughtful additions and touches in the room which many mainstream hotels don't necessarily provide. For example, this is the first accommodation I've stayed in where built-in international adapters were provided.
The service was impeccable all around but the afternoon/evening shift young receptionist at the front desk needs to take a hospitality 101 course. I asked if the hotel has printing services as I needed to print out my boarding pass. She said the hotel doesn't have that (fair enough) but she wasn't able to help me further. When I asked if there is an Internet cafe nearby where I could go to get my print job done, she wasn't able to help me with that either.
I have been staying here off and on for 20 years and I still think it is the best hotel in Kuching - as do the Sarawak State officials. It is a top end business hotel and performs at a good international level. Not particularly cheap but they will look after you. Good quality food but eat locally for the Malaysian experience. Try Top Spot - it's very close. Ask for a river view room - absolutely astounding views of the town and the river.
