“A positive story, but small improvements would make it better..”

We liked our stay at the Avila resort hotel. The room was comfortable and spacious. There were two pleasant beaches that were ok. The restaurants, however, were so-so, and the lovely schooner bar served the weakest drinks I have ever encountered. Our Pina Coladas were indistinguishable from soda pop and the Mojitos had no detectable alcohol. Next time, we will bring or own drinks. Although the hotel is within walking distance of town (it is not all the convenient on a very hot day). Weirdly, the much advertised shuttle service goes to town only twice a day--once at 9:00 and once at 3:00. So my wife and I would finish breakfast on our holiday breakfast around 9:30-10:00 and had either to hire a taxi or walk. It should leave more frequently. And the morning shuttle is inappropriately early for vacationers who come, partly, to rest. Two excellent restaurants within walking distance, Rozendaels and Fishelisious (sp) made up easily for the characterless food at the resort. We will definitely stay there again. We loved our visit the island and we enjoyed the comfort of our room. Reading on the beach with an occasional wade-in was a treat. But, given the care for so many things, we were irked by its short-comings.

Area recommendations
The Avila neighborhood was satisfactory. Close in with good restaurants, and still able to maintain the resort quality.

“A little disappointing”

The hotel is a nice boutique hotel but the room was very small. If you are from the Netherlands then this is an ideal hotel for you to stay as I would say around 95% people staying here are Dutch. I had a new refurbished room however I was not impressed with the shower as I had to run around to get wet. I told the front desk and they said they sent someone to take a loo, however it was no different to when I first arrived. One day I went to use the gym (Very nice and new equiptment) and was told by the receptionist that I needed a towel. I asked him if he had one I could use to which he replied that I would have to rent it or go back to my room and get one. I was infuriated by this as he should of just gave me one to use and save me the journey back to my room....couldn't understand the reasoning behind this. Also every day I went to the beach to find out there were no beach towels available. One day I was told that every other guest had come down at 8.00am and taken all the available towels....Again I found this ludicrous. The next day I was told they were being washed and couldn't understand why the towels were not washed at the end of the day so they were ready first thing. The hotel on the whole was a nice and pleasant place but these little things really let it down. The other bad thing about the neighbourhood is that it's not safe to walk around after 8 pm and you had to take Taxi's everywhere and they were extremly expensive, even more than Manhattan or London

“Avila Hotel”

One of the nicer hotels in the area. Surrounding neighborhood is not nice, but there are several good restaurants on the same street. Hotel beach gets very crowded with tourists and children. The hotel beach is beautiful and the snorkeling is great, but it is a public beach except on Sunday and holidays. The service at the Schooner bar is inattentive to say the least and the food is not very good. Pool looked beautiful also, but it was always too crowded with screaming children. Hotel was pretty, and comparatively, it was one of the better options on the island.

Area recommendations
Expect Willemstaad and Otrobanda to be run down and slightly less picaresque than your research has lead you to believe. The best beach is Cas Abou which is about 30 min north of the Avila Hotel.

“Tired looking hotel”

For a four star hotel, we were disappointed. The hotel showed its age. The rooms were comfortable and service was efficient, but the hotel grounds had maintenance issues and the pool wasn't cleaned daily. You are best to look elsewhere for meals. The breakfast buffet was dreadful ($17 per person) and dinners were nothing special. We did find several restaurants a block away which were very nice (Seasons, Rosendauls, and an Italian restaurant La Pane (sp). Hotel is in a convenient location, just a 15-20 minute walk into Willemstad, but city has a lot to be desired. A day trip of the island with Peter Tours was worthwhile. The surrounding area is very poor and run down - and not advisable to walk at night. We still enjoyed ourselves and the beach and turquoise water was beautiful. If we go back we'll stay at the western tip of the island.

“Fantastic Find”

Beautiful hotel, friendly staff. A bit off the beaten path, but a quick 10 minute walk to Willemstad if you miss the hotel's shuttle. Great beach. Ok food. Nice rooms, particularly in the newer Octagon Wing. Primarily European vibe as most of the guests are Dutch. If you are an "ugly american tourist' dont' bother...

“Far from expectation.”

It started that the check in was far to late, even that we waited until the original check in time. Room was not ready. There was a leak in the room, that was not fixed until the next day. Coffee maker was missing, and about everyday something was not prepared and had to be asked for to be rectified. We were not impressed with the service towards the cost of the rooms,

“NEVER GOING BACK TO CURACAO”

I felt that this is a racist society. Never saw a single white person except for at a regatta where everyone was white. Where do the local white people live. Everyone was friendly and helpful though language with people in the street was hard. Always felt safe no matter where we walked. Several sites were incredible but not enough to warrant two 12 hour trips back and forth.

Area recommendations
The slavery museum is a must see. It broke my heart and gave me a sleepless night,
Getting around
We walked a lot, it was short walk to town, and used local taxi service when needed. Only $12 to and from town.

“The Queens hotel”

This hotel is apparently where the Queen of the Netherlands stays when she visits, and i am not surprised. We received a free upgrade to the Octagon Building (probably because we went in the off season). I could not have asked for more from the room. It was beautiful, comfortable, large, and had a stove and refrigerator and dishes. We had to ask the kitchen for a pot or two that were missing, but they brought them later that day. We ate at two of the hotel restaurants: The first, lunch at the Belle Terrace was truly excellent; one of the best meal i had had in a while. The second, dinner at the Blues restaurant was sub par. Edible but not good. The food and drinks at both restaurants and the bars were expensive, but that was typical for everywhere on the island. One night at the Blues bar they had a jazz/blues singer/pianist who was amazing. the bar was packed with locals and toursists alike and everyone had a good time. I highly recommend this hotel, especially in the offseason.

Getting around
We rented a car from a local car rental place and it was an adventure. The roads and traffic are similar to that of Europe, and by that i mean completely illogical and intensely hectic. On the rare occasion that street signs are present, they are nearly impossible to read. Roads are laid out randomly and determining right of way at intersections (few of which have traffic lights or stop signs) is as easy to figure out as quantum mechanics. That said, I would absolutely do it again. It was nerve racking at times (many times) and I spent an inordinate amount of time driving in circles but it was overall a lot of fun and gave us freedom to explore the island on our terms.

“A real winner!”

Avila Hotel met most all our expectations with flying colors. The property is beautiful with great amenities. I highly recommend staying in the Octagon wing. Our room was modern and super clean. The A/C was amazing for good sleeping at night. The gym is state of the art. They charge you for a gym towel which seems odd. They don't charge at the beach for beach towels. The infinity pool and beach facilities are perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed eating lunch everyday at the Pool Bar. The food is quite amazing and the staff is very friendly. The only downside we experienced was dinner at Blues Restaurant the night we arrived on a Sunday. The service was completely amateurish and the food was just okay. It was a completely opposite experience to our lunches everyday at the Pool Bar that were fantastic. We choose to eat dinner at local restaurants every other night after our Blues Restaurant experience. The neighborhood has some great restaurants within a 2 to 10 minute walk from the hotel. I would definitely stay at Avila again when returning to Curacao. The location is perfect. It is convenient to Punda and Otrobonda, but when you are on the property you feel secluded.

Area recommendations
You must visit both parts of Willemstad, Punda and Otrobanda. Also, a trip out to Westpunt and the beaches along the way is a must.
When to go
We went in late April and enjoyed the fact that it seemed much less crowded than what we heard about the peak season in the winter. The weather is pretty much the same all year on the island.
Getting there
We flew American via Miami from NYC, but I understand Continental flies direct from Newark, NJ.
Getting around
I would highly recommend renting a car. They are very inexpensive on the island. We used most of a day to drive around the entire island starting up the southern coast to Westpunt and then back down the northern coast visiting the windmill farms. The different inlets and beaches along the southern coast are amazing. Renting a car also makes the trip to and from the airport fairly economical and under your own control. The taxi rates to and from the airport are almost as high as the daily rental rate of a compact car depending on where you are staying.
Must see
Museum Kurá Hulanda is an anthropological museum that focuses on the predominant cultures of Curacao. It offers a world-class chronicle of the Origin of Man, the African slave trade, West African Empires, Pre-Colombian gold, Mesopotamian relics and Antillean art. It is at the Kurá Hulanda Hotel, Spa and Casino in Willemstad on the Otrobanda side.
Dining
There are three restaurants that I would highly recommend. Pane e Vino just opened recently and was not listed in any tourist information. We found it by accident. The chef is from Naples and it has the most amazing Italian food. Intermezzo was also stumbled on by accident. It has Mediterranean tapas. It appears to mostly attract a local dutch crowd. Lastly, Rozendaels has a mixture of local cuisine and other original dishes. The tuna three ways appetizer is amazing.
Nightlife
MOON Beach Club, Lounge & Restaurant is a must. The views of the sunset and moonrise are just amazing.
Outdoors or beach
The best beach we found was Playa Jeremi on the southern coast up near Westpunt. It has no facilities and is very secluded so bring your own food and drinks for the day. It is an amazing place to watch the sunset too.
